Are these only added to E10? I had assumed it was the ethanol reacting with something else that was causing gum which didn't happen with straight unleaded.

I thought ethanol was the problem in both situations - attracting water but also softening and attacking "rubber" (or what we think of as rubber) flexible parts in carbs and fuel lines. The other junk additives (corrosion inhibitors, de-activators, and stabilizers) can settle in the carb as the rest of the fuel evaporates which causes gumminess and blockages. I'm really tempted to try and separate out ethanol one day to see how pure petrol performs and smells. there are lots of vidoes online about this.

As per the title. Older style Stihl top handle saw model number 009. Came from an old gentleman I know who passed away aged 92 a few months back. This was his firewood saw until he got too old to start it. His son in law asked if I could see if it would be of use to anyone. I’ve given it a clean, stuck fresh fuel in it and it started up straight away. I’ve chucked a new chain on it and run half a tank of fuel through it, tweaked the H & L screws a tiny bit and hey presto runs pretty sweet. Idles / ticks over nicely and crisp throttle response up to full revs. Must be of use to someone? How about £50 plus postage or collection from Felsted/ Dunmow Essex CM63EY. One for you Taxes are at a record level, funding for the NHS, Benefits, Illegal immigration etc etc are all off the scale. Our armed forces are cut to the bone, do not try and imply that has anything to do with supposed not enough taxes. You are retired, go quietly and whilst doing that maybe think about our own young people not some bit of shite that broke into our country illegally.

biofuels absorb water. Biofuels such as Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) biodiesel and ethanol are hygroscopic, meaning they readily attract and hold moisture from the air. also with diesel it supports a bacteria ,commonly known as "diesel bug" that will multiply at an alarming rate until it renders the affected fuel system totally inoperative. there are chemical products available, "biocides" that can reduce and eradicate this bacteria.

I don't think its the ethanol that attacks the rubber ( could be wrong ) but the other parts of the pump fuel , Ethanol is the bugger that attracts water as I understand it .

Sure, the original question was to J who seems to imply that people shouldn't rat on those who are evading tax and therefore evading tax is OK. However he also says that the immigrants are bleeding our country dry, perhaps double standards would have been better. One for you, how do we keep things running such as the armed forces, hospitals, support systems, law and order etc, without taxes to fund them?

My understanding is that newer twos strokes have better "rubber" or engineered plastics that can cope with ethanol, hence why the manuals say its ok to use ethanol fuel. I'm not saying they pump fuel doesn't cause other issues - water attraction, additives gumming up etc., carbon build up etc, but that carbs and lines are better able to cope with ethanol. I still try and check them for cracks or issues though.

Ive a stihl br400 blower, 24 years old past few years its been running a bit like a knob, started ran, but not to full revs . Local garage re tuned her and got it almost right ..one day it wouldn't fire, swopped plugs got one hell of a belt off it , then it went back in again and the coils fked , they can spark enough but not enough to fire , Answers a new coil but im not paying £180 plus labour for it

I ve had new plugs that were broken, when I have problems with stuff always use plug from other machine to, know it's good. Had a problem with a Husqvarna saw last year, would start and tick over but splutter at full revs, tried different plug carb clean, then change ignition module for one on other saw and fixed it. Years ago working for someone he had saw that wouldn't go, was quite new so I took it back to dealer as I was passing, they point bank stood there and said couldn't be ignition module, but I was 99% sure so pulled plug cap off and put finger in cap and pulled starter. And I didn't get a shock but dealer did.

Thanks Mark, I only pulled one off will do the other. Good point ref HT lead but I'm sure its not. Thanks for confirmation, new coil it is I think. Just seemed strange the coil was working until a plug is connected.

Agree, Chinese replacement carbs can indeed be hit and miss. Example from this year. 2 year old 13hp loncin motor on a beach boat hauling winch. Much corrosion of carb due to saltwater exposure. I replaced original carb ( Chinese loncin ) with a Chinese carb. Winch under load would stall out unless choke on partially. ( Running lean but fixed main jet) Put old main jet into new carb ....sorted. not E10 related I know but what I'm getting at is it's easy to fit a new carb and if the machine is still not right you go on a wild goose chase looking at other possibilities.
