In my experience of tendering that is exactly what is/I’ve done, large projects cover the overheads and keep the kit and lads busy. Smaller projects outside of the large make up the profit margins, it’s almost every large business model hence the reason costs plummet on large tenders as it’s no secret! The big boys can’t have 20ts, whole tree chippers, 20+ guys etc sitting in the yard waiting for profitable work.

Depends on your approach/kit, like Mick says if you have the right plant you can complete the jobs in half the time bringing labour costs down dramatically. If you have experience with the kit there are plenty of companies hiring 360s, shears, tractors, trailers etc. However like Joe says if you want to do it your way, price it your way!

Excuse my ignorance (if applicable), but if two ropes are current guidelines/regs and you’re not working in accordance with the above surely you’re knackered if any accidents/near misses were to occur? Bang goes your insurance, accred, business as the HSE are not going to accept years worth of experience as an excuse to why you weren’t following regs. Just wondering in terms of a HSE enquiry/case would it be that black and white? -

The question is do you have someone you trust to head up the second team? If yes then as some of the other chaps have said subby in the rest of the team to start with and when you have repeat work/clients look to employ full time. If you’re looking to hire in the team leader/supervisor unfortunately in the current market id forget it.

Apologies just realised the company I contacted was recommending PDS1 not DSC1 presumably there is a difference? Why do I feel like this is a can of worms I might be opening here 🤣

Am I right that the dsc1 is part theory (online) and part rifle handling/proficiency and you can take the two separately? not that I was looking for a quick fix but it seems there’s a long road ahead and I agree I want to start right.

I used to shoot quite abit for rabbits and done a fair amount of clay shooting (air rifle, shotgun), I’ve never shot a true rifle though and it’s something I would like to do especially due to my love for venison. Im fairly new to my area so as you say im going to speak to a few locals and see what it leads to. I’ve looked into my dsc1 but I wasn’t sure if it was a pretty meaningless qualification as I hear mixed things about how mandatory/necessary it is. It seems this convo somewhat backs up that theory (it does seem it’s a good place to start if you don’t actually know anyone who hunts)

Thanks all for somewhat confirming, im going to trawl round some butchers and gun shops in Cheltenham/Cotswolds and see if I can get some introductions. Presumably rabbits etc are pretty easy to access, stop and ask a farmer as I’m sure he won’t be opposed to me knocking a few off.

I have heard similar from a few people awaiting licenses. I’ve also looked into organised stalks/shoots and I couldn’t believe how expensive it was, I appreciate paying for an experts time, costs etc but then add on between 350-600 for a decent muntjac/roe/fallow buck! I will probably head to my local gun shop and see if they can give a steer. If a license is at some point granted would approaching estates/land owners work at all or is there insurance issues to deal with?

Yeah, ill probs sneak a sausage from time to time. I’ve eaten a lot of pheasant, partridge, venison etc and I used to shoot alot of rabbit when I was younger and as you say all lean. I would like to get into shooting and prepping the majority of the meat I eat.

Is it possible in the uk to source your meat solely from hunting (I’m talking game, deer only obvs not shooting daisy the cow)? Is there groups, clubs etc as it’s something I would like to do. Any tips/info appreciated, I live in Gloucestershire/Cotswolds. cheers,

Probably a sign (can’t get staff etc) of the times but for a second time running RAC have been a joke - 6/8 hour response time. Is there a consensus on who the best is? cheers,

Somewhat of a sad truth as you can work hard for somebody from day one but no redundancy / reason is needed for letting somebody go if they have under two years service (just need to pay their notice period).
