  1. No I done it while it was still attached then cut it off. It's been in my shed drying for a few months and had a quick coat of Danish oil.
  2. My first attempt at carving... A small simple mushroom albeit a little falic looking.
  3. Although they have a bad reputation, recently the British Army boil in the bag meals have come on leaps and bounds. I always keep a few in my bag and they can be eaten cold In an emergency
  4. Full of idiots especially where I work. Here is just 1 example from today. We have a 12 strong maintenance team 4 of us share the tree work, I have got climbing qualifications and more experienced than the rest. All the rest only have felling and cross cutting really basic stuff. We had some pretty bad wind damaged stuff large branches hung up high. Instead of asking me to go and have a look. The boss thought it would be better for the less experienced lads to sort it and gain some experience? I agree in 1 aspect that they could do with some experience but being thrown in at the deap end wont help
  5. If I have calculated it correctly it works out to 29.4 years until the debt is repaid...
  6. I work for the MOD and they try to run the camp on a shoe string. It's completely ridiculous I'm close to handing in my notice if it persists. It is written Into my contract that If I damaged equipment and it is seen to be be negligent I am liable to be charged. Acas a company who offer free employment advice have said that if he is successful in having me charged he can only charge me enough to drop my pay onto minimum wage... 20p per hour. So could take a while to recover his money...
  7. As it's the government I work directly for we are not permitted to maintain our own kit I spent 10 years in the forces as a mechanic and I'm not able to even think about brake pads never mind welding. We use contractors for work like this who treble the price. Mechanic took one look at it and wrote it off now my boss is looking to claim the £11,000 back out of my wages.... I think I'll soon be looking for a new job[emoji106]
  8. Not easy to see from this picture the severity of the damage I feel it will probably be a write off. I was flailing along a tree line and didn't compensate for the fact the front loaded flail over hangs the tractor by around 18inch on one side and I hit a tree. Complete rookie mistake and believe it or not I am one of the most experienced with the tractors and accessories where I work. Has anyone any experience with this kind of damage? And if so in you opinion is it fixable? My opinion is that the metal where creased at the 3 point linkage will now be weakened and never regain its original strength even off straightened. All the rollers, cutters, pto shaft ect are absolutely fine just the main body and linkage bars. Whoops [emoji15]
  9. Here's a few from the camp I maintain. There are loads like this due to strong costal winds.
  10. We have quite a few pine where I work that are real knarly shapes due to a strong Coastal wind. I will photograph some and post maybe tomorrow.

    Stihl MS180

I have a 181 and it has served me fine not had any issues with it. Little under powered in my opinion more of a DIYers saw. That being said I still use It on ever job. Alongside a ms 251c
  12. I'm of a similar view as already stated. The reason I asked is I recently spoke to a guy local to me who had been given some second hand climbing gear from his friend who worked for BT or some electrical company who climb pilons. The only thing I considered usable I'm my opinion was a pair of spikes. He on the other hand seen it all as perfectly usable kit.
  13. Basically what is says in the title. How far would you go with used equipment? Iv seen the likes of ascenders being sold second hand maybe some tree spikes. But what wouldn't you buy used even from a known source? ( and I mean climbing equipment) Ropes are an obvious one.
  14. I have a pair of Origon not sure what particular model but they have lasted me 4 years now. The stitches have just started to separate so there on their last legs. So I'm on here looking for recommendations too
  15. Second that! Its what I have used for a while now
  16. Hi all, I dropped a white poplar today today and the whole thing from top to bottom was covered in these growths. I was just wondering 1. Is it common 2. What is it? Thanks Tony

  18. Where I work on an MOD site all of our felled trees are logged split and seasoned in a barn and we can't make profit on it so they only sell it at £20 a ton collected. Absolute bargain IMO. we don't advertise so only a few people actually know about it. Sent from my 5010X using Arbtalk mobile app
  19. I thought as much. Hence the reason I have never tried it. I always stick to the tool in my first aid kit. Sent from my 5010X using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. Covering them on Vaseline is another one I have been told. This will suffocate them. Never actually tried it Sent from my 5010X using Arbtalk mobile app
  21. I keep one of these in my first aid kit. Whilst away on exercise in Germany with the Army a few years ago I got one on my arm took myself across to the medic who took out his knife and a lighter? He heated the end of his knife until it was glowing then pressed it against the tic [emoji15] [emoji16] He come back to me that evening with a leaflet for information about tics the second sentence said ' under no circumstances apply heat to a tic' I still have the scar on my forearm.
  22. Thanks for the advice I'll have a look at them. I have a few tree identification books but none of them have and real information about the different species. And I have very limited knowledge of diseases. I would like to know more. Is there any online course for this? Sent from my 5010X using Arbtalk mobile app
