1. The obstacle is the path To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail Work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching and Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand.
2. that was some how cathartic watching that!
3. cooperation is always preferable to confrontation. He may be a silly old duffer city slicker but he does have an axe to grind and you will find as the cuaser of the noise/nuisance you will have the council on hi side. If you can show you have tried a few things to reduce the noise it will go a long way. My trade is building and believe me we have loads of complaints when we build a house as who wants a building site next door! I always try to be polite and reasonable even id they are not which is 90%. I'm on first name terms with all the environmental health team (noise / dust). It's a case of managing the complainers expectations and if the council can go back to them and say we got the builder to do X then they are happy. Even if the X is nothing, which it is most of the time! Have to play the game.
4. Ah the old noise complaints. Bit like church bells love them or hate them. Are you able to put some stacked jumbo bags of soil between your saw area and him ? Very little effort on your part and then next time he comes you can at least say you've done what you can but thats it. Takes the wind out of their sails if you are trying a bit.
5. Thanks for the advice. I think its a case of get the digger first then sort the rest. Im not too fussed with it being overweight as it doesn't get moved a lot, unlike you guys it will sit on a site for 3 months then off to the next etc. On another note, I would like to get one of our laborers (young lad showing promise) properly trained to use it from scratch, grading, trenching, loading etc we dont have time or space on site. Don't need official tickets or paperwork as its not needed, anyone recommend a good 1 to 1 trainer for say 3 days I can send him to?
6.
i Eddie, I'm in Worcester.

7. having a price done on a PC30 long arm. Just about keep it legal when towed with the buckets on the tipper bid. Then to see about the engcon wizardry... Mini Excavators | Komatsu | PC30MR-3 Crawler Mini Excavator
8. thanks Eddie, That is VERY interesting. I was looking at a tilt bucket anyway. 10k although a lot of cash in my industry would be rapidly paid back in efficiency when its used a lot. more investigation now ....
9. thanks Eddie The little 3 tonners we've had on hire (Kubota) wouldn't get close to the 20 tonners and to be honest we use the manitou as its quicker its only a nice to have. Will have to do some more research.
10. Anyone own one ? Looking at buying a new/nearly new long arm version. They call it the 33U now, little bit heavier but just about moveable nod nod wink wink. Just on the limit to to be towed and has best reach/dump/dig in the mini excavator world. 3.2m dig depth and 3.5m dump height means it could potentially load a 20 tonner if it sat on a pile. Don't see much mention of them, any particular reason ?
11. to add to this thread, we have a 5 ton JCB which is the smallest size that can really load a 20 tonner. Great workhorse, powerful but she likes a drink! We also have a telehandler with loading bucket which is a great tool. Couldn't be without it used daily for unloading, stacking scaff etc. I'm thinking of buying a 2.7 tonner as well for when the big machine makes a mess, like sorting drainage and sewers on drives / tight spaces. We hire them in a fair bit, and i really dont like repeat hiring kit as its dead money. You don't see swivel buckets much in building but they would be dead handy i think for grading and trenching to help stop the sides falling in. Any recommendations on a supplier ?

13. postcrete is a rip off. ton bag of ballast @ £40 10 bags of cement @ £3 ea You can either do a pad, saves wood uses more conc. Or bed the post less conc more wood wood rots. get the longest 5x5 beam put a post at each end and one in the middle. If its all going to be boxed in you can always use conc posts and chop them in half. It's carry people not cars at the end of the day.
14. goats! you need goats!
15. i would think a decent electric motor instead of engine would be cheaper to run, quieter, more reliable.

23. it really doesn't matter the amount, process is the same. If he has just submitted it then you have time before the payment is taken anyway. Just call them.
24. assuming you have the correct figure just pay it. If its already paid and they owe you either call HMRC and explain or net it off your next return. No drama really.
