  1. Just use block paving, it will look nicer and you wont have to faff about with any trenches or drains. Make sure you get a decent depth of type 1 under it. put a slope on it of course then if you experience pooling pipe it off to the nearest ditch to flow away.
  2. no they are not. no you wont. No such thing as 'automatic speed camera linked to central computers' You are probably confusing average speed camera's which actually ignore the speed and time you. These are VERY limited and wont effect 99.9999999% of local journeys. Just motorway reps. So choosing a DUV just to avoid these is somewhat extreme.

    AWD panel van?

iveco do one. 7.2 tonner to get around all the paperwork.
  4. Get there early, 6 am, drop tree into road / the weather did it. Call 101 and report it, tell them you are on site dealing. Any busy bodies show up refer them to 101 earlier. Or of course spend your hard earned.

    Hook loader

do a search here for min-artic. they have train weights upto 11 tons on an old car licence and no operator or tacho required.
  6. I'll make sure they specify welsh electric users only. I may turn up and demand some of my English tax that subsidises you welsh!
  7. triple glazed are ok unless you are close to a road, they are very bad for noise. Had to take a whole front of house out at a new build and replace with double due the noise. It gets trappe din the 3 panes somehow...
  8. undefloor isnt too bad but then again im in the trade. We wont be using a bore hole, long trenches with loops in. Minimal cost as we have a digger but any DIY'r could do if they have room.
  9. couple points to consider. Efficiency of GSHP is upto 4:1 that is for every £1 spent on electric you get £4 of heating. Combi cant get anywhere near close to this. Second, you cannot get any subsidy for a combi boiler. They also need expensive contracts on them to keep the working. wont be for everyone, especially if planning to move or rent but if you are going to stay put for 10 years or more and have the spare cash its a winner.
  10. Following on from the tesla thread. I'm in the process or sorting out the parents in law place as they are retiring shortly. They like most of the baby boomers have good half decent pensions. With the relaxing in the pension rules allowing more flexibility this is what im arranging for them to eliminate energy and heating costs. They live in a normal late 70's 3 bed semi south facing with decent back garden. 1. Roof insulated 300mm (done free by british gas) 2. Walls insulated (done free by British gas) 3. Decent double glazing - £6k 4. Gas central heating replaced with underfloor heating via ground source heatpump. £13k ( gov payment of £1300-2000 per year for 10 years) 5. Solar PV 6KW - £5k (using the hot water cylinder as a battery to heat up when excess solar available) 6. Off peak backup hot water heating. So the thick end of £25k in exchange for 20 years of no energy bills. If you add the heat pump subsidy it makes the £25k the same as if it were sat in a bank account at 5% for 10 years. We all know what old dears are like, worry about every penny. Wont put the bloody heating on and have a small fortune in the bank 'just in case'. I'm in the building trade and to be honest every house should be built like this but at the moment it has no value to the buyer or more importantly the bank so we don't bother. This really needs to change.

    Tesla Powerwall

they burned through 1 billion in the last 3 months alone! As a new tech startup they have to get up and running. Elon has a good plan. He made the roadster to fund the P90 tesla, the P90 funded the model 3 mass production version. And the whole lot of that funds his space program. He has orders or more than 5000 per week yet is only managing to prudce a fraction of this. He has a lot of german automotive robots coming to get the production line up and running. Lets face it if any of the big 4 can crank out normal cars at this rate which are much more complex then he will be able to as well - just needs to get the infrastructure and people in place. We will be seeing the traditional dealer network disappear along with most of the garages as they arent needed for electric. Soon as there is a car available that can do 200miles sat at 80 with heater on and can be rapid charged to another 160 miles range in 20 mins then the death of fossil motors will be here. It will bring back a resurgence of the local mechanic just to look after the running gear. No expensive black boxes all over the place to keep the engine working.

    Tesla Powerwall

Just to catch up. I paid for the powerwall from my own pocket, covered by saving the payments from my 3.885kv solar install. You can control how it charges - it has two modes. 1. Any excess solar not used by the house is used by the battery and released when house demand is greater than solar available. 2. Time shift. You get 1 above, plus the ability to tell the powerwall when to charge from the grid. I have a time of use tariff where I pay 5p KWH for electric between 00-01 and 7am. So the battery is allways charged to full by 7am. This in effect means the most I will pay for electric at any time of day is 5p instead of 17-24p. to buy one there is a long waiting list, it costs £5k + install. This is a business deductable expensive if used to power your home office/business. I was an early adopter of solar so benefit from the original feed in tariff rate of £0.55p /KWH. from may to early October I average 15KWH per day. As you can see this adds up fast. No wonder the gov scrapped it. These batteries will become commonplace in a year or two and much much cheaper, same as when solar first came out. My panels and install were best part of £10k, they are now £5k. The other tech coming up is using an electric car as a battery for the house, these have much bigger capacity - tesla 90kwh that would power a house for week. Using a combination of solar and time of use you effectively make the electric bill insignificant. Add some heat source pump to this and say good bye to the gas bill as well. For many people, especially retired, after the rent or mortgage, energy bill is the next biggest. If it can be got rid off largely then its a winner.
  14. you lot are mad messing about with fires. If you have land, ground source heat pump if you dont air source heat pump.
  15. Had it fitted yesterday, already had 3.85KW of solar. The unit 'holds' 13.5 KWH of energy and can discharge a max of 5KW at once. The idea being the solar tops it up when your at work and then you get to use it a night. I also have switched to the 'time of day' tariff which allows the powerwall to charge up (winter/spring/autumn) for 5p/unit instead of 20p during early hours of the morning. I am fortunate in that it was free, paid for out of my solar payments. the display is quite cool, shows where the power is being used.

    New Digger

as its long arm, it has to sit ont h bed of the pickup as its too long to fold up enough to sit on the triler plate. Fortunately we'll move it probably 3 times a year so not much of an issue. i tow it with a daily. 3500 tow capacity.
