Cheers ref the mill - any views on the edge mill?. The saw I've bought has a 28" bar and chain and also an 18" bar and chain, so I can grind the 28" chain down to 10degrees (on my Lidl chain sharpener) which should help, or I'll buy a ripping chain (once I find out the spec) - no idea what bar is on it though - how does the bar make a difference? just the stiffness?

Hi Larurus, not quite sure what you mean by this unless it was meant for another thread? Any words of wisdom before I go headlong into the world of chilling? Oh and an update to the chainsaws - I have just bought a second hand 28" one. Should be with me on Sat/Mon in a weeks time. Just need to commit to buying a mill now - am looking at: 24" Chainsaw Mill - With Extra 36" and 48" Rail & Bar Sets WWW.EBAY.CO.UK Chainsaw Mill Kit - With Rails for 24", 36" and 48" Bars. Rob D and Lazarus - a bit of advice and guidance if you wouldn't mind! I've posted on another thread about some wood I have lying around and as it seems the general consensus is it's only god for firewood, I quite fancy having a go at some Chilling. Via a quick bit of searching, it seems I can get a 20" chainsaw and 24" mill for around £215 plus any import dues. I can get a larger (up to 34") mill for another £20 or so, but as the 24" mill is larger than the 20" bar, is it worth it? It seems that if I go any larger in chainsaw, the price jumps massively. Even if I don't do very well with the milling, I have use for the chainsaw as my other one is only a small 15" Husky. Thanks all, so far. To answer some questions and add more info: The American Oak (red oak?) I'm hoping (was hoping?) to make into a rustic table - doesn't have to last 20 years, I just wanted to use it for something other than firewood - but if the middle slices won't be up to much, then it will simply get ringed up etc. The aim/hope would be to probably have it alaskan milled in situ, using the middle 2 slices as 'table tops', then the smaller piece sliced into 4, the middle 2 being used for the horizontal part of a bench seat and the smaller (rounder) bits as the vertical supports. Some of it (particularly the Doug Fir) is so that I can say our home is (part) built with something that grew in the garden. I'm looking to put an 'Oak framed porch' on our home (replacing one that is falling apart and probably built around 1930-1940) but using the Doug Fir. Something similar to this but only open on 2 sides, not 3. The 'external doorway' will be filled using our existing wooden church style doors and the rest double glazed. I guess the vertical (and visble) beams are probably only 4" sq, not 6-8? I have a 15" husky that I use for all my ringing up, so can chop off the ends (more easily on the smaller stuff), but the only one I'm realistically interested in doing this to is the Doug Fir, the Pop and Spruce are what they are. if I can use the Pop as cladding, I have a wooden clad garage that needs some work, so it would go to that, else - firewood! I need around 20m3 a year so have a good requirement but know that Pop isn't a great firewood - but if it's wood and seasoned, it burns! I'm BSL registered so don't buy in any fuel, it all comes from tree maintenance/work from within my 4 acres of woodland. If it's firewood, not an issue. Most of the trees on my land are TPO'd (sadly!) and I have permission requests in for another 5 oaks all of which I'm hoping to have dropped this autumn. There are also another 10-15 or so trees (mostly oak) that will be coming down over the coming months, some of which can easily be winter into spring next year so thanks for that info. I don't have a recent picture of my woodshed, but attached is one from about 4 years ago. I've 'gone around' the shed about twice since then (ie filled from one end and cleared from the other in rotation) I think. It's about 3m deep and 15m long.

Finally some oak (5 large trunks) felled 1 week ago. Largest of which is roughly 6-7m long (has a fork in the last 1m), max dia 45-50cm, min dia - probably about the same, slightly less. 4 other trunks, some are a bit bendy (might be an understatement) but it will be up to you to tell me what is usable and what I just need to ring up for firewood. One trunk has been cut into 3 roughly 2m lengths - see photos for diameters.
-
Next is an American Oak (?) I'd like planked so I can use one or two to make a garden table and use the smaller bough to make seating etc. Down since Feb 2016 approx, large section length 2.8-2.9m, roughly 60cm dia the whole trunk. Smaller piece is roughly 2.5m long, 30cm dia.
-
Next is a Douglas Fir that I;d like milled into beams suitable for building a brick porch with timber part frame (so 6-8" sq at a guess?). Felled since Feb 2016 aprox. Roughly 17.5m long, 60cm max dia down to 25cm min dia. No picture of the main trunk but it is virtually dead straight!
-
Next is a Sitka Spruce butt. Felled since May 2016 approx, length 5.6m, max dia 70-75 cm, min dia 55cm.

I have a number of 'bits of wood' I'd either like to sell / get rid of or have milled up into usable timber for me - or whatever 'you' can come up with. If all else fails, it's firewood for my biomass boiler to heat my home - so it won't go to 'waste' as such. All measurements are approx and based on diameter, not circumference. All are in Upleadon, Gloucestershire, GL18 1EE. Some are 'roadside' (the freshly felled oak) and the rest are in our garden but probably accessible by telehandler or other lifting/moving equipment - or can be milled in situ if you have the kit (ie sawdust is fine!) Poplar - approx 17m long, felled approx Feb 2016, max dia - 80cm, min dia 40cm. Quite a bit of it is off the ground (due to the sawn off limbs) but some is in contact with the ground.

I can't see any advert on Arbtrader for it - things tend to sell a bit better if you can see the item. Where is it advertised currently?

I use this kind of thing. I think I have about 4 on different bits of kit. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192939912615 No battery, runs of the power it takes from the induction off the HT lead. Very simply - just works. Cheap as chips from ebay - £3.52!

SHT TDA by any chance? If so, I have one and have had it for the last 2.5 years or so. Get around 6p/KwH based on my EPC. I reckon that what I'm saving in oil (our house was heated by an oil boiler and AGA previously) and with the RHI and my free firewood (around 4 acres I 'borrow' from) I'll break even after 12 years, so anything afer 13 years is free heating! 25Kw boiler, 2000l thermal store, 4 bed detached house. Burns once per day in the winter (sometimes with extra logs) and once every 7-8 days in the summer for DHW only. I'm very happy with it so far. My 1 tonne of pellets I bought, I reckon will last me about 7 years - use for self ignition only but eventually I'll build a pellet store, but the pellet feed kit and live on pellets only when I'm too old/tired to chop/split logs etc. Should need 6-7 tonnes per year.

New widescreen stoves - hit or miss?
TuscanPhil replied to BowlandStoves's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
Hit! 5Kw Classic Purevision (with flash / without flash) about 20 mins after lighting. -
I have lots of old cherry in my woodland, most of which keeps falling down so I don't have to fell it! The trunk that is still good wood, once seasoned for 12 months or so, burns well and I get through loads of it in my 25Kw biomass boiler and internal log burner. Some of my cherry can be 18-24" diameter.
-
How heavy is it to move around? I'd like to be able to move one around my garden some of which is on a slope. I currently lug a JB300 (chipper) around so as long as it's no harder than that, I should be fine.
-
How do you dry/season the chips before you use them? I have a JB300 and a 25KW biomass boiler for my home setup but if I can use my woodchips in the boiler (and internal 5KW stove of high efficiency) before my wife uses them for top dressing the flower beds, I'm all ears!
-
I have a large poplar 'trunk' which was felled about 2.5 years ago, still lying on the ground. I was planning to get it planked up so I could use the wood for random stuff around the garden/garage/shed etc. I also have a 25kW biomass so have need for firewood (plenty in store seasoned and ready to go at the moment though). Would it be better to get it planked (and off the ground!) or just ring it up and split/stack for firewood and use in the biomass boiler? Photos should hopefully give an indication of size. (Poplar in background of second photo - the spruce/douglas? needs planking as well!)

What tachometer for chainsaws sthil+husky
TuscanPhil replied to Arbwench's topic in Maintenance help
One here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163068597422? for not many notes. -
Thanks Bob, I'm not sure how much the colour difference is due to the wed colours used and the actual end colour when painted though. I'm going to order some paint for my Entec (which is badged as Goldcup), so I'll see how that yellow compares to the JB, or I might just order some RAL 1003 and over time paint it that colour as I do touch ups etc! At the end of the day, it's not being used in a professional environment so what it looks like isn't too much of a worry, as long as the metal is protected so it lasts.

Oregon is *still* looking for field test participants
TuscanPhil replied to OREGON®'s topic in General chat
so if I've already tried the questionnaire how do I try it again? It's telling me I've already entered the survey -
I want to tidy up some rust spots on my JB M300 and am trying to get the right colour code for the yellow used. I've been advised (by Global Recycling - thanks Dean) it could be RAL 1003 but if anyone else knows or can confirm, I'd be grateful. I'm intending to use something like https://www.smithandallan.com/products/tractol-paint/1447-tractol-329-single-pack-machinery-enamel-all-colours/ Tractol enamel but if someone can point me to something better, I'm all ears!

Cheaper on ebay - £4.67! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282697986038 (I don't have one so don't know what the quality of it is like) I have put hour meters on my kit though! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263617923810

Because basically when I asked the question, I wasn't in need of a quick/instant answer and so waiting didn't matter. I don't use my chipper 'professionally' so don't need it to be back up and running. If I need to chip, I'll use my JB M300! As the mod from here has 'poked' Timberwolf, and as I'd expect them to read their forum every once in a while, and as other people might want the answers (which they won't get unless they too phone up), so I'm prepared to wait (and keep poking!). It's not like they are tricky questions either! Pretty much any TW tech should know the answers off the top of their heads without having to look it up.

Hi Timberwolf, I can see you've been in this forum today - anyone know the answers to my questions please?
