  1. For injection to offer real benefits it needs to be high pressure. Crankcase injection doesn’t offer much over a auto tune carb for example. It is however a very good marketing tool!

  4. Pretty much sums it up treespotter. Have you noticed the hollow hole in the crankcase on the 572?? Another cooling feature as long as the user keeps it clean
  5. After seeing the test today there is next to nothing in it!
  6. If you press them home to much this happens. Ideally you could do with a tool to set them to the correct depth such as the one for the 372 etc. Using a socket isn’t great as they never sit square.
  7. I would say they should be compared how they come with out the box so what each manufacturer specs for there own machine obviously same length bar of course. It’s th complete package I would like to see tested especially since they are both making there own chains now
  8. I would be careful trying to replace the bearings when you don’t know the quality of the cases. They want to be nice and warm before you start if you do go down that route. You should be ok to clean the bearings and oil them when you build it. The bearings will be cheap but then again so is the rest of it. with the cases already chipped you don’t want them cracking when trying to get bearings in or out and you certainty don’t want them spinning in the cases when you start it up.

  10. Do you really think a chainsaw manufacturer would design a saw so that standard PPE was not effective? Especially when many do there own PPE. Chainsaw PPE has to pass testing for it to be approved and is rated for chainspeed not petrol engine or electric. It is tested on rigs as well as a saw. Any fool can write a Wikipedia article. In the academic world Wikipedia doesn’t exist.
  11. I’m not a stihl expert but I did once have an ms211 pretty much the same machine as your 181. It used to make a tinny sound when the caps in the exhaust that cover the bolt holes we’re loose and they used to rattle. I would also just make sure the exhaust studs are still tight. If it’s only had light use I wouldn’t imagine it been anything serious I hammered mine and it was a an excellent little saw. If if not I’m sure someone will help out
  12. Don’t forget the X cut file guide available in a kit or on its own. For the correct angle the standard .325 gauge or pixel gauge doesn’t give the best results.

  14. That would be interesting. It wouldn’t surprise me if your 372 was quicker having seen other ported saws but I would think it would be close. For me the main benefit is how light it is and they haven’t sacraficed durability and from what I have seen so far that’s appears true. The Matt finish is a nice touch also.
  15. I think the problem with your 550 is it’s not had any updated parts fitted. There were problems as you describe but now they are very reliable. Did you ever have any work done under warranty ect? You say old is better than the new. I have to disagree my 572 is in a completely different league to any 372 not to mention lighter!
  16. That is up to you, my personal opinion is no, I rebuild them with a light smear of grease on the base gasket and that’s it. You can buy the sealant if you wish. Only a small amount is needed near the exhaust and the inlet manifold. It’s been factory fit for a year at least now.

  19. The magnet is used for the throttle sensor and yes they can pick up all sorts of debris from the bench. There is no way of checking the valve without activating it via the laptop but it’s very rare to have one fail. What is important is making sure the airgap on the coil is set to 0.2 and that the magnets are clean. As as stated above make sure the engine is good mechanically. If it isn’t then you need to find the route cause. I would also pressure and vac test it. You can’t repair these properly unless you know the engine is air tight your wasting your time otherwise. With the right tools it’s a 5 minute check. Split manifolds and port cover gaskets used to be common. The auto tune can compensate for a small air leak and they run lean enough as it is! Of course it would still start and run but when the operator has it red hot in the woods and it doesn’t restart properly or it seizes they get really pissed!
  20. 580 is a standard 2 stroke engine and far more reliable. The trigger is mounted on the side of the pipe so when you give it full throttle your hand doesn’t lift like it does on the stihl which is mounted directly on top of the tube. The 580 may still be the most powerful on the market it was at one point would need to check the spec. I have one it’s excellent. You can clear a big area very quickly
  21. It’s not yours to alter though. Saying that it’s already been changed onto 3/8 but there’s a reason for that. standard production will be 1/4 so your not getting a true trial anyhow
