Hi Mark sorry for the slow reply! I've been getting on really well with the alaskan, milled lots of really nice slabs and some larch for cladding. I bought a large circular saw for ripping boards and and have been surprised at how accurate Ive been able to get 2x2s 2x9s etc. Definitely got the bug anyways and am looking at purchasing a mobile bandsaw mill for a few larger projects I have in mind.

It seems like there would be a decent market from them in the UK I don't know why they don't make them available over here. Maybe we could start a lobbying group?

Yeah I was thinking meripilus maybe, there's alot of work to do at this site so I will check back in autumn. No bleeding canker, the tree basically looks to be in perfect health apart from not coming into leaf. Looking up into the crown I cant see any deadwood or decay, all the small shoots are still there. The fact that lower down I could make out small branches which had come into leaf this year and died back as if girdled recently must be quite telling?

I "hat-racked" a large ash tree (about 3.5ft dbh) on my own land about 7 years ago, it was looming over a neighbours house. Being well aware of the implications this seemed like the best management option for me. It has come back nicely albeit a little dense, you cant even tell in summer and hasn't shed any branches since. I will probably spend half a day taking off all the regrowth this winter and then not have to touch it again for another 7 or 8 years. Horses for courses

I previously had problems with achy knees after long days on my kleins, bought a pair of aluminium geckos and its some of the best money Ive ever spent. So much more comfortable I can spen all week in them and not feel any grief -

Has anyone got any ideas about what might be ailing this beech? (Im just trying to upload a picture now) It hasn't come into leaf fully this year but on inspection in the spring there were no signs of deadwood or decay in the crown or anywhere on the stem. I could see some small isolated branches lower dow which have come into leaf and died off this summer which suggests they have been girdled quite recently. Whatever has happened to it has happened very quickly. Had a good look around the base and I found some fungus that I've identified as Lacrymaria lacrymabunda which are not parasitic, no signs of any other bracket fungus or old fruiting bodies. Nothing else in its habitat seems to have changed i.e. soil levels/root damage and its in a row of about 8 other very healthy beech trees. Does anyone have any ideas?

They said I could go down their yard and mark up what I want, any advice on what to look for apart from the obvious i.e straight timber with minimal knots? Hi all, I'm looking at buying a load of larch/oak from a local forestry/firewood company to make some cladding and other bits for my own use. Just wondering what a reasonable price for an 8t timber trailer load of half larch and half oak would be? Delivered and unloaded 10 mins by tractor from their yard? They suggested around £50 a tonne for the larch and potentially a bit more for the oak. Excuse my ignorance but I have no idea with this sort of thing! Would an 8t capacity timber trailer actually be carrying 8 tonnes of logs in a load? And if not what would be the best way to work it out? Thanks in advance! Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk

Hey guys thanks for the advice, my alaskan will be arriving this week I feel like a kid at christmas, I guess I'll just see how it goes. It's definitely something I'm exited to get into even if it's just for my own use. I'm about a year into a long term project renovating a couple of farm buildings at the moment and I think the savings on timber might almost justify a small second hand mill at some point especially if I can do a few jobs and make some money out of it on occasion Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk

the woodland trust app is really handy, as far as books go Ive got Illustrated trees by david more and john white its a really lovely one to own. hardly pocket sized though!

I've got an arborist 150 and can't fault it, just as good if not better than the timberwolf 230dbh I had been hiring before that. The guys at greenmech were really helpful too, the guy in the service department even offered to talk me through checking over a used machine I was going to look at

handy info that, thanks mate! Although when I called up the dvla about trailer weights they told me that if the total maximum legal weight of the car (MAM) & trailer (MAM or MLPM) total less than 3500kg it would still be illegal if the trailer weighed more than 750kg. Confused!

Hi all, I'm looking at different ways to diversify and expand my current tree surgery business and was wondering about the viability of offering a mobile milling service. Starting off with just an an alaskan mill with a view to purchasing a mobile mill. Just looking for some advice from people who run these types of business. Is it something that could stand alone or is it more of a supplemantary income to the main part of your business? Do you generally buy the wood in? Who are your customers? Do you sell the timber as green or dried, or use it to make furniture etc? Any help would be much appreciated.

Really good advice thanks mate, so you reckon the 390 is sluggish with a 28" bar? Thats what I would have on it most of the time, I thought that was pretty standard for that size chainsaw and I was reading another where people where saying they put even longer bars on them occasionally. Hi all, I signed up with HCC last year but haven't even looked at it properly untill today, just wondering how everyone else is getting on? I feel I've got a bit of time and motivation at the moment to get stuck into it, so any advice others can offer would be very much appreciated.
