  1. Exactly the kind of thing that made me give up being Safecontractor approved, maddening nonsense when you are a sole trader with 3 employees.
  2. Glad to hear some improvement. Hope you don't get too much of the post viral fatigue, that's a real pain. Hope the wee dram helped!
  3. Derailing the thread a little, but along the general lines: I quoted for a simple job to fell some trees, subbing to a construction firm who were just going to lay a big concrete base for a training area. I got the job, they asked for RAMS and I sent what I regard as a decent risk assessment and method statement. They said it wasn't adequate and wanted more detail. I sent back the amended risk assessment with the simple addition: In addition to all the above we will maintain our usual vigilance based on the assumption that anyone within sight of our work zone is stupid, ignores warnings signs, and has a death wish. I was more than happy to be told they did not find this appropriate and that they would find another contractor. Sometimes you just have to say it like it really is, and if penpushers don't like it, too bad.
  4. Morning all, Dry and mild here. Going to put the new finger bar hedge cutter on the tractor this morning, no cab, and drive it 5km to do its first job. Got to choose the weather and clothes for the job!
  5. Morning all, Have a good 3 x 20th PeteB. Dry here, but not working today. Have a good day all.
  6. Morning all, Waiting to see if the rain will go forth. Will continue with local gap filler job for parish council if it improves, otherwise splitting logs at home. Had a lovely day yesterday climbing and dismantling a couple of trees, pleasantly surprised by how my joints coped, so feel justified avoiding getting PWT. Have a good day everyone.
  7. Deep joy and bliss. You have my sympathy.
  8. Happy 60th birthday Mick. I celebrated my 60th four years ago by making sure I did a climbing job on the day. Don't envy you all those hidden spikey bits on the Acacia.
  9. Morning all, Dry day forecast. Climb and dismantle a couple of woodland trees today, can't get the mewp to them. Not done a proper climb for a while, don't think my shoulders will leap for joy, probably end up doing just one today. Have a good day
  10. Morning all, Had email notification with less than 24 hours notice my hand op is now deferred until mid January. So: Will have to Xmas washing up. Rain forecast today so will start a local parish council job we can stop/start on as a gap filler, then hopefully a climbing job in a woodland garden for rest of week. Have a good day all.
  11. Morning all, Not bad here, just some drizzle. Felling a couple of local conifers today, last job for a few weeks. Having my Dupytrens hand surgery tomorrow. Oh no, I won't be able to chop vegetables or wash up for the next fortnight. Have a good day all.
  12. Morning all, Off to deliver some woodchip, then back home to bring loads of logs into the garage for the boiler. Won't be able to move any for a bit once I have had my Dupytren's hand surgery next week. Or to be more precise I would feel pretty stupid if I knocked my hand post op due to driving tractor etc!! Stay warm and dry all.
  13. Morning all, Dental hygienist this morning then meeting with tree officer to look at a tree, of all things. Not raining either😀
  14. Morning all, Wet here. Got to stay home to receive a delivery, no time specified. Tractor pallet forks, no doubt on a pallet. Good excuse to stay warm and dry😃
  15. Morning all, Crisp frost here. The pre heater on the Iveco makes it so much better on mornings like this😀 Have a good day all
  16. One of my customers we have worked for a few times now really is amazing. The last couple of times we have been to him he has served good coffee with bacon and egg baps, wait for it, TWO baps per team member. Total star. Oh yes, he also pays up the same day.
  17. Morning all, All snow gone, reasonable day here. Probably today split some logs, building up supply for next winter.
  18. Similar with me, started at 41, still climbing at 64. While I would never pretend to be able to access the crown as fast as a young climber, nor to being able to do delicate crown reductions (can with my mewp😀) I think experience and confidence helps massively. I have had several young climbers work with me over the years and only one has had the confidence to drop large sections by free fall or lowering to maximise the available drop zone. I guess the difference here is that I am running my own small business and can choose which jobs to take on, whereas an employed climber doesn't have that luxury.
  19. I don't really know what to suggest would be a fair price, but the asking price certainly sounds a lot to me. I take the view that used arb vans should be priced on age and mileage, not registration year. I have a 2015 Iveco daily with high spec and very good enclosed chip box and tool locker, with 46,000 miles on it. I would guess that £15,000 + VAT would be a reasonable price for this. Not sure about the chassis type on Cabstar, but I prefer open C section chassis rails, rather than tinny box section, due to better corrosion resistance.
  20. Morning all, The overnight rain hasn't cleared all the snow away yet, so day at home. Don't fancy slipping over and avoidable injury. Maybe do a few logs, bit of machinery maintenance. Have a good day, whatever you're doing.
  21. Morning all, Only -3 here. Going 300m up the lane to see take top off a Christmas tree then fell the rest. Then off to buy our Christmas Tree. Yes, a bit early for my liking, but got to get it before incapacitated by hand surgery. Have a good day all.
  22. Morning all, Doing a quote first, then off to dig out a couple of stumps. NO, not hand digging, gave that up a long time ago. Have a good day all.
  23. Morning all, Quite a heavy frost here today. Was planning to start work on a parish council job (flexi re time) but it involves a slippery moss covered path for a lot of the work. Going to work at home on a decent surface taking out a conifer hedge ready for replacing with something that doesn't get red spider mite. Stay warm and safe all.
