  1. Due to some of our more horrible regular hedge jobs (only kept them on because they are decent customers, usually with trees) I have ordered a finger bar cutter to go on the back of my Kubota STV40. Don't fancy a flail without a cab, and a 1.9m bar should give me a chance of a reasonable finish as opposed to an uneven one due to learning curve with a (narrow) flail head.
  2. Much more body friendly. Biggest downside I can see if people want their grass mowing regularly, which with this July's rainfall can be problematic. Flipside is like when we had a grounds maintenance contract it was money for old rope when their was a drought period.
  3. Many wise words of advice in this thread, all learnt from hard experience. I would add one thought, and that is never, ever, give a fixed cost for any hedge that you have not checked the width of, if you cannot tell this from ground level. A mistake once made and never repeated. It has also been quite helpful in the past to take the customer up in the basket if using a MEWP and let them see for themselves just how wide their "simple hedge cutting" challenge is.
  4. Depends to some extent on how steep the gradient is. Picture would be helpful. One of the worries can be the risk of the MEWP wanting to slide down the slope, and this needs to be addressed. I have done my MEWP training, and the refresher course, and this issue was not really discussed. I think this leaves those of us at the coalface having to decide for ourselves how to proceed.
  5. I've never consciously processed that thought before, but it certainly explains some belt tensioning issues I have occasionally had over the years. I find your postings are often helpful on mechanical issues, you clearly know your stuff very well👍
  6. Started with Thin Lizzy 1976 AC/DC with Bon Scott 78 or 79, followed by AC/DC with Brian Johnson Tourists in 80 or 81 Dire Straits mid 80's Status Quo not long before Rick Parfitt died All good classics IMO
  7. The people in Meir and Normacot must have genetically modified hair that grows fast, what with all the barber shops they appear to need🤣
  8. One of my team was in the police for many years. He explained to me that in our area the large number of barbers shops and takeaways that keep popping up will almost certainly be money laundering operations ie they set up a "business" where cash payment has been the norm for years, and use this to launder dirty, typically drugs, money. I had never thought of this, but had certainly noticed an unexplained number of new barbers opening up.
  9. Absolutely. Having worked in the NHS for 30 years, and been a patient in it as well, I have seen it first hand. A year or so before I retired early as a GP lots of local practices changed from 1 computer system to another as this was deemed to be better. All funded by NHS, including training staff to use new system. Yes, you've guessed it - within a few years they were all changed back to the older system for whatever reason. In 1984, working as a junior hospital doctor in Birmingham, I noticed a corridor full of bedside cabinets in good condition. I asked one of the porters why this was happening - he explained that the relevant department had not used up all their annual budget, and needed to do so before the year end to ensure they did not get a smaller funding for the next year! Sorry for derailing thread but this is so ridiculous people need to know.
  10. Interesting that so many of us say the same. I am fine if tied in, no problem up any pole with spikes on. Looking over parapet wall on a cathedral tower is scarey, I feel there is an evel unseen hand behind me wanting to push me off. If a customer asks us to clean the gutters out "while you're here, I will pay you extra of course" - no thanks not using a ladder at gutter height. Totally different if the MEWP is on site. Flip side re MEWP - we dismantled a decent sized Ash, I was at full reach in the 18m MEWP and it was a bit windy. I would have felt better tied in and climbing than in the basket.
  11. Yes if local eg within 5 miles, otherwise charge for delivery.
  12. Exactly what I do. Ifor Williams 12ft high side tipper. Full load costs me £40 to tip at local greenwaste site. Every time I have thought of a shredder (I did even have a Bearcat PTO one) I know it is not worth spending the money on a shredder for what we do.
  13. I sell unprocessed timber, in pieces one person can lift and carry, for £30 per cubic metre. Nobody complains at that price, seem happy to pay it.
  14. Never even heard of Boombox. Done all except that.
  15. Change it to a Hilux Invincible X 🤣
  16. I have an Ash that we planted 23 years ago, it was from a nursery ie ? imported. In recent years the top half of the crown has died back in keeping with adb. As it is not a hazard where it is we have left it to observe the progress. Whilst the top half is clearly dead the bottom half is flourishing, so we will continue to observe. A couple of slightly younger Ash, self set in our hedges have been doing well, and they are in close proximity to the poorly one. Interesting to see how things go.
  17. Follow this link to the gov. website /assets/static/govuk-opengraph-image-dade2dad5775023b0568381c4c074b86318194edb36d3d68df721eea7deeac4b.png Employment contracts: Written statement of employment particulars - GOV.UK WWW.GOV.UK A contract is an agreement between employee and employer setting out implied and explicit terms and conditions - written statement of particulars, collective agreements It tells you what you need to put in a contract. There are loads of free templates available online, just google "employment contract template". I think I found one years ago on the gov website. If you can find one there I would tend to trust that most.
  18. Very good. Can't beat a bit of lateral thinking. Or do we call it something else these days?
  19. Depends on the firm doing the inspection. I have found that some put a sticker on the machine at each inspection, but others do not. I don't know if this a requirement beyond having the paper certificate of inspection. Interestingly, when my new CMC spider arrived the dealers put a new Loler on it, but with new climbing or lowering kit it does not need Loler inspection until it has been in service for 6 months.
  20. I only had demonstrations from Hinowa and CMC, but both said that a machine built in the 90's, like my Aerial, was built more solidly than the newer stuff. I never accused my 1959 Fordson Power Major of being flimsy!
  21. Agreed entirely, I have the same machine. Also good is the fact it can operate in vertical mode for really heavy rings/lengths. I also have a four way head for it and this is quick on appropriately selected pieces. Excellent value.
  22. I started this thread in June last year. In August I committed to purchasing a new CMC18F spider left, and took delivery in February this year. So far I am delighted with it. Honda petrol engine is quiet, and we often use it on 230V mains as we are largely domestic, so power usually available. It gives 11m outreach for 80kg, and 230kg up to 8.7 metres.
  23. My new CMC 18m spider certainly flexes more than my 1996 road tow 16m Aerial K16T. I don't think the wobble in the basket mounted looked like a sign of good mechanical health.
  24. Seems like a perfectly straightforward up front type of question to me. If it was nearer I would be offering my services, with my arthritic knee and recent hand surgery to boot. Looks a simple enough job for any competent climber.
