  1. Sony Cube. Small, good base, phenomenal battery.
  2. I think it's natural in a way, that youth has little interest in the past...your life's ahead of you, thoughts are of possible futures, potentials. There's just so MUCH history, and most of its the history of boring old farts ripping each other off in one way or another. I was interested in ancient history as a kid, the Vikings and mongols and so on. As I get older I find myself identifying more and more with the characters of recent history, and find more interest in the details of what whent down and how and why. Listening to a thing in the van a few weeks back about a strategic breakdown of the D-day beach assault, I quite unexpectedly found myself moved to tears. Partly gratitude for the American men, younger than me, with everything to live for, who sacrificed their lives for a moral principle, and partly rage, at the currant generation, now the same age.
  3. Prince Edward...?....isn't that a type of piercing?
  4. If you can roll the timber, just cut in untill the nose is nearly buried, then roll the log a bit and do it again. Use the first cut chanell as your guide. Obviously make all your cuts first, then roll and continue all the cuts etc. It's also a way to keep your chain out of the ground.
  5. Give a man a fish...I make about the same, consider myself incredibly lucky. I like the sentiment but surely the best way to alleviate suffering is to help others to strengthen their local economies. Untill the "poor" have the means and materials to create their own wealth and productivity, they will be dependant. Same with an over generous welfare system, it disincentivises people to find or create work for themselves. Some of us have the innate drive and pride to support ourselves, but many do not...we've all seen it, people who might have thrived if they'd been given a kick on the ass in their youth, ruined by lifelong benefits. Speaking of malaria, DDT had it eradicated in many parts of the world. Used responsibly, it's a wonder chemical, costs pennies and solves a fundamental problem.
  6. A guy has just attempted to assassinate a Republican Senator in the US, wounding the target and four other people. the shooter has been neutralised. Not a jihadi.
  7. Thomson Unicenders...Singing Tree Roperunners...make a necklace out of them and tell customs its personal jewellery.
  8. The digger guys I know say anything but JCB for microdiggers. I've used a hire JCB micro a few times, very rattly, jumpy and disappointing in power. The 1.5 tonne so much better in all respects, can't remember if it was a JCB or not though.
  9. Was at the same malarkey two days ago, strimming a 45 degree bank, 20 foot tall or so. Sliding all over the place, hard on the feet and not fun.
  10. I think I know the family you're talking about...I actually heard a rumour - just a rumour, mind! - that they're um...well, might as well be blunt...inbred...cough. Sad, really.
  11. Theres a remote stretch of road which always floods in heavy rain, sometimes up to four feet of water, and it gets progressively deeper. Tourists and even locals try to drive through it, thinking its not that deep. Every winter theres two or three cars get stuck and flooded, at night, and theres no cellphone coverage there or farms around. Theres usually a good social scene there, with distraught motorists huddling in the downpour, so I head out at each flood to rescue them and bring them back to the pub. Quite fun.
  12. Seconded. As a teenager I worked for a guy, and with a group of friends, none of whom voted in anything. The first election in which I was able to vote I mentioned that I had...the "boss" nearly dropped his spliff in his lap! "You voted?!?" I gave a rejoinder much like the above post and the general vibe at the lunch table was - 'vote with your feet'.....ok...and go where, exactly?
  13. You might do well...and then go power-mad and make your dog a senator!
  14. "There are old grannies, and there are bold grannies.... But there are no old, bold grannies." Except for herself, obviously.
  15. Beats arsenic I suppose. Jaysus. Never underestimate the dangerousness of the elderly.
  16. So...are you still a socialist? (Gets coat...).
  17. most realistic post so far the thread. It's really the only way this situation is going to resolve, in the long run. The muslim populations in Europe will choose life, civilisation, and integration. They will, bit by bit, self police the regressive out of their ranks.
  18. Too expensive. If they are native born but identify as a member of Islamic State, then they should be dropped off in whatever bit of desert is ISIS territory. Send them to the Caliphate they claim to be a member of. And let them starve in the desert. The Caliphate can be allowed to exist as essentially an open air prison...internment in which will carry a de-facto death sentance.
  19. Dali Lama is more of a realist than he's given credit for...
  20. Well, just be glad we don't live in Germany...some of us would have been fined or jailed for our hate speech - I mean opinions...
  21. If your itinerary takes to to Sweden (I know it doesn't but just for kicks) stock up on cheap spirits in Germany and swap for Aspen!
  22. The Making The News thread is a church service compared to what goes on in the Wild West of Arboristsite!
  23. If the situation is looking that bad, he might consider field and farm work, fruit picking and that. I know a few guys who went strawberry picking in Norway and they didn't have any Norwegian. From there, he can chat with his employer and get a foot in - offer a bit of free welding around the farm, that sort of thing. Hopefully one thing will lead to another....
