  1. Thanks for the feedback. Just a part of me that feels guilty but will change the going rate. He's going to replant but not sure what yet. I was thinking a Sorbus as might be more suitable to size of garden.
  2. Just been to price felling an Eucalyptus that I have reduced twice but unfortunately this time it seems to have died. The work was carried in November to the same points as pervious. I'm looking for feedback to whether its my fault for what ever reason and if so could price accordingly for the fell and grind.
  3. Had one last week could I do the job for cash and lose the VAT. I was tempted as going day to day work wise at present but glad I said know. I believe that ever customer should pay VAT just to make it fair.
  4. It's getting really close now that you will pay the same tax whether you're Ltd or sole trader. The only real benefit will be you can control how much tax you pay on dividends and keep yourself under the higher rate. I once went over the higher rate as a sole trader and the tax bill was massive plus I had to pay back all the child benefit. Now I can leave the profit in the company and draw it later in life.
  5. It also only works if your partner doesn't work or their salary is under £50000.
  6. Will your insurance company cover you to carry out tree work as mine seems not to. I'm going to speak to the broker to try and get a clear answer.
  7. Just wanted to revisit this thread as a colleague said that crane companies will now longer risk doing contract lifts and at present there is no insurance company in the uk that will insure tree companys to carry out works with a crane. So basically if anything goes wrong while using a crane it all comes down to you. Does anyone know if this is true.
  8. Really depends on your personal situation. If you're profit is over £50000 but you could happily live under that then Ltd is better for tax reason. If you're under then you really have to do the maths taking in consideration additional banking and accountancy costs.
  9. I work for over 10 years with a guy and became good friends and did similar to what you were saying. As time went on I wanted to press ahead with the business but he wanted to stay the same which started to causes friction between us and once I took on an employee it all went pair shape and we stopped working together and didn't speak for 4 years which was a real shame. We finally got back in contact and work with each other here and there which I'm really glad happen. I get on well with everyone I work with now as we are all on the same wavelength but I do enjoy a day a week on my own.
  10. Just need to make some friends that are tree surgeons. Maybe £350 is more realistic.
  11. Really good question. I think £80000 to £90000 company profit can be made with a team of 2 with one member being the owner/main climber. So if owner comes of the tools to run the business then probably one team of two should be making a profit of £40000 to £50000 and then times that by how many teams you have. So I would think that you would really need at least 3 teams to start making more money then if you just went out on your own.
  12. Question to ask whether you guys do much freelancing with the loader to other firms. As work is a bit slow just looking at other ways to bring in money. Also what kind of money do you think is fair. I had £400 in mind for me and the loader.
  13. Not uncommon now to do away with broadband completely and just use the data on your mobile phone if you have an unlimited data sim to run eveything in your house that need wifi. Of course it might not work for everyone but worth a look
  14. Sky the biggest rip off there is. I know a few people that pay over £120 and thats not even the whole package and you have to pay extra to use in different rooms. I was explaining that its far cheaper to use Now for everything Sky as there are always deals and you can pay as you go. I once got sky entertainment and movies on Now for £90 for the whole year.
  15. Has anyone's work improved. I have only 5 days booked in for this month and two in May. Hoping that sun out means more phone calls but I don't feel very confident that it will get much better.
  16. Here's a picture of the tree in full leaf. Thanks again for all the help.
  17. The app is called picture this. Has anyone had any experience with it and what are their thoughts. Thanks
  18. 90% sure its a Wingnut. Going to get the app next that can id any plant or tree from a photo. Think there is a yearly cost but would be a real help with id and also help with my latin which I really struggle with at College.
  19. Used this company for the first time to sharpen some greenmech blades and have to say what a brilliant service. A week turn around and half the price to what I have paided in the past. Came back razor sharp and well packaged. Think I will try the blades when I need to replace.
  20. Great idea thanks. Found it on Google maps in full leaf.
  21. Thank you for having a look. Sorry its not a great picture but sent by the client. I was thinking a Wingnut or Bean tree. I was sent another picture. The tree in the background is a Hawthorn. Think the tree stands at around 5m tall with a 4m spread.
  22. Can anyone please help with identifying this tree. Thanks in advance
  23. £20000 will just about get you a euro 6 tipper. Plus chipper, saws, climbing and rig kit etc. Insurance. Chainsaw tickets Rent somewhere to keep the gear. I'm not saying you couldn't start with £20000 but even that is a lot of money to find. Unfortunately this is not a cheap industry to start up in.
  24. Don't think you can say that start up cost are low anymore. I would imagine you need at least £30000 to make a go of it if you're working near any city's that have ulez. Good contact climbers can make more money then some company owners with much less stress.
  25. The 1.9l engine in the Isuzu pulls better then the 2.5l I had in the cabstar. Also it might come down to stock. I had a wait of 6 months for mine without an option of the bigger engine one that year.
