  1. The roller motors/shaft/collars/mountings are a constant problem
  2. In fairness to Forst, if you’re going to stick garden ornaments, innocuous or otherwise into any chipper, you have to expect consequences.
  3. As for the convenience of the grease bank. You could do worse than get the cover off and have a good poke around on a regular basis on a Forst, greasing the nipples direct makes you do that. Checking roller motors, shaft collars, the crappy motor holders, welding and everything else on a regular basis can save you a few quid. I hope yours works well and long Paddy, there’s no doubt that there have been issues on build quality though. They’re very good at helping over the phone and sending out spares, so there is that.
  4. I took the pipes out and put the nipples straight into the bearings.
  5. The phrase “initially I wasn’t impressed” troubles me.
  6. Yes, agreed Mark, it’s what separates this place from the FB sites. It’s easier to sort the wheat from the chaff here.
  7. By the coast today and kept hearing the call of a bird I mistook for a kestrel. Anyway I kept seeing glimpses till it landed in the garden. No apologies for the terrible picture. Wryneck, a sort of little woodpecker, a first for me.
  8. That’s right, there’s still signs up saying ‘no carriage racing’ or something like that.
  9. Seems to be, often on the telly and reported in the papers.
  10. Another WFT from WW2 with his master, a fighter pilot.
  11. This photo was taken by a trackside camera at a trotting race in Bordeaux in 1971. A Fox terrier decided to join in the fun. Such a great photo, the dogs enjoyment and concentration, the horse casting a sideways glance at the dog, the sensation of speed you get. The dog is the spit of Igor (I know dogs are bred to look similar etc)
  12. Well there are more knowledgeable people on here than me about TPOs and the law. But I don’t like the look of that.
  13. I’m guessing the poplar is behind the yew. Got any other pics? That root movement does look significant from here.
  14. My first job in this game was driving to London with 2 or three others who were smoking dope from the get go. The whole day way like herding cats, hopeless.
  15. I’ve told this one before but it bears repeating. Had à mate who would work for me odd days, drug damaged but a good laugh, not a thief. Anyway, working in a garden with him and the girl who worked for me at the time, I was up the tree and they were clearing up. He says he needs a shit so I send him over the road to the woodland, he grabs his backpack which I assumed had toilet roll in and crossed the road. An hour later he comes back, gouging out on smack, he’s been cooking up over there. I kicked him out the garden before the client saw him and he walked home. Plenty of sorts I worked with got stoned during the day, I could never understand it. I liked a joint plenty but as a reward at the end of the day, not as as a permanent state of mind, where’s the fun in that?
  16. Mallards are such good partners.
  17. One point Spuddog0507 makes that I very much agree with in this job and life in general is achievable goals and time frames. Just drifting along isn’t good enough. Say you want to be a decent climber in 2 years and a highly competent one in 4 years. So work out how you can achieve that and expedite it. Start your own gig by the time your 30, so start some weekend work as a climber once you get handy. I don’t want to get all ‘in my day...’ because it’s the same now as it was then, you have to put in some extra effort to be good. Good luck.
  18. Bit wordy, but many good points.
  19. The flywheel bearings aren’t purge bearings. Dont over-grease them.
  20. Thinning cedars is a good way to accelerate branch failure Causes more twisting of branches in the wind.
  21. I did that as well, till they carelessly left the sharpening company’s paper wrapping on the blades. So I went direct (next town) and get it done for a third of the price.
  22. Try and keep two or three sets so you’ve always got a set or two in reserve.
  23. I worked selling metal to engineering firms in another life so I am au fait with the sizes. Its just the stocking of nuts and bolts that’s the issue, it’s nice to have every size to hand. Not a deal breaker though.
  24. I have paid off the Forst ST8 and feel I’ve suffered enough for whatever sins I committed in a previous life so it’s time for a change. I have thought about a number of options and I’m drawn to this. Second hand, from a dealer with some sort of warranty 457hours €28000 plus VAT. 1.5 tonnes so a little heavier than the Forst, similar hp, but a reputation for reliability and build quality. Do they use the non metric nuts and bolts? Cos that’s a pita. Anyway I’ll throw it out there. TIA. Mick
