  1. Interesting mate, especially the way the Ash and Birch graph lines cross so quickly. Suggests that if you need firewood today ash is best but if you can wait til next week birch is better. As expected oak needs the longest seasoning time. I'd like to see a graph for conifer too, something like scots would be telling.
  2. Many thanks again Openspaceman Interestingly I've just measured some birch I cut and split about three weeks ago. I split a log and the mositure meter says 29% in the middle. Mind you its cooled off today and its tipping it down
  3. It would be interesting to know how much you charge for a day Chris?
  4. I met a young lad a couple of weeks ago who told me he was cutting for 20 a 25 days solid, then taking a week off. He said he liked working like that because if he stayed in town he, 'got into trouble'. I was impressed and it made me think that if you give some of these youngsters something to get stuck into they've got more about them than you might think.
  5. We've had a warm dry wind here today Stubby butit did rain last night. I guess that would mean much higher humidity than a kiln?
  6. Thanks Openspaceman, those figures are pretty remarkable. I'm guessing that you're reading from the surface of the cut log and not cutting again to get a new reading? If so presumably its a surface reading and to get a true reading you'd need to split the log and check MC in the middle?
  7. I guess time will tell if its a good deal - all depends what these inmates end up doing with the chainsaws when they're released
  8. Good looking bench that Mike, very nice
  9. Silly hot here today. Its making me wonder what the temperature differrence is between the great outdoors and a kiln right now? If its possible to season logs in week, or even days, in a kiln then surely a couple of months of this would be similar?
  10. Don't forget the saving on tax - if you buy logs in as an individual then you're using income thats been taxed. I think that needs to be factored in
  11. I have an Ikra red that I bought from Tesco (I used Tesco vouchers, so no cash required - very miserly, I know:biggrin:). Its very good - I've been cutting about seven cube a year with it for my own use.Its not given me any problems so far. . A few months ago I got hold of a good sized Cherry tree. The Ikra cut up the trunk no problem. The bloke I got it off couldn't beleive it - he'd been and got himself and electric saw then found it wasn't up to the job so he'd given up.

  15. Good post that Mark

  17. Oh, I see, interesting. So theres a good supply of easy to process sweet chestnut that makes the softwood unviable. Its a real shame if theres no way to make use of it though.
  18. Thats a terrible shame and dreadful waste really - if you were near me I'd be delighted to take it all off you. I love burning softwood and I think we really should educate more people to do the same for the sake of the environment.
  19. To be honest its not a lot of fun having a rash that itches like hell. Might not be life threatening but not good
  20. That is interesting Phillip, never heard of that before. I wouldn't think theres much point going to see a Doc, I bet most of them will never of heard of it either
  21. Maybe saps up this time of year?
  22. Mine too - hands swell right uo, red rash and itch like mad
  23. Works particularly well with conifer IMHO. I leave mine in lengths on the pile for a few years, then cut and split - no resin and drys very fast
