  1. Kerikey! I've often wondered if I'd have the presence of mind to cut through a line if I had to. Good thinking, well done.
  2. Service tree maybe.............BEECH.
  3. I like an ident quiz, but I cannot understand why we only get a twig in the picture, every one has camera phones right? Give us something to work on.
  4. You're going to have to tell us what machine it is.
  5. But unlike beech and oak (and ash to a certain extent) it will regenerate from a coppice, meaning turnaround times from nothing to usable firewood is much less then the others.
  6. Perfect firewood...in a woodburner, spits on an open fire.
  7. You're right to get a pro, to do it, I did my own, got it wrong and a thousand miles later the same thing happened.........muppet!
  8. Joking aside its something that gets forgotten about a lot. I've had a bearing disintegrate and let go on a TW, I'd had the machine 10 years and never gave it a thought. I've seen pictures on here of a GM where the same thing happened. If it happens in the wrong place at the wrong speed some very expensive damage can result. Anyway good luck with it.
  9. I'm all for fracking, cheap energy under our feet.
  10. Some boyos in Switzerland apparently...or Austria. Plant Taxonomy: Why Plant Names Change (CNPS-CI)
  11. Fwiw I would sell them both, buy a decent Yankee grinder 35/45 hp (or more) and sub out the little stuff. Plenty of guys around with pedestrian grinders.
  12. Terrible news. I've spent time in a hospital bed myself Sean after an accident in the trees. I hope you have a full recovery. Lot of people on here rooting for you.
  13. Thank you, all is clear. Here is a picture of a kitten.
  14. Yeah probably (he says having no idea what Mark Bolam is referring to)
  15. Dull old night on here.
  16. [ame] [/ame]This looks handy
  17. "we always make the mistake of interpreting tree value as something that must be equated to human value" How else can we interpret tree value in an urban setting? It's there for our benefit, (be it planted or left there by developers) to provide shade, to be a pleasure to look at, nesting for birds, insects, give us a signpost to the changing seasons etc, I believe amenity value is the terminology. Once it doesn't do some or any of these it has no purpose and no matter how many college trained tree workers blather on about "intrinsic value" it can be felled. (should the owner desire it of course!)
  18. BTGAZ, nobody is make decisions, just playing the game, practicing if you like, a bit like all the "how much would you charge" threads. When we're in the mood I think they're a useful exercise.
  19. Aesthetics should be very high on the list in a garden. When we (meaning us tree workers) learnt about trees, climbing, reductions etc at college it changed the way we see things, now when we drive round town we look at trees, looking at how they react to pruning, growth patterns, wound reactions etc. I feel like the guy in the film "The Man With X-Ray Eyes" it sends me a bit nuts sometimes! Now Woodyguy genuinely does see a characterful oak tree because he knows about trees and to an extent he's right, stick it in the middle of a woodland or hedgerow and he can go and look at it all day, but the rest of the cul de sac see a scrappy mess that they don't want to park their cars under or they don't even notice it. Sometimes we should try to take out our tree workers eyes and remember what the world looked like to us before we learnt this stuff.
  20. I'll think about that for a bit, it'll take some thought.
  21. Get that wheel sorted! Nothing ruins a day like a wheel falling off your chipper.
  22. But what about his hat Huck? It's utterly splendid!
  23. Nice job on the beech. Classy
  24. In a way it's not as dumb as it looks, that spar will only come over when there is significant pull on the line, plus I like his hat.
