  1. Nonsense. The accident statistics speak for themselves, that’s why action is being taken. I recently worked with a young guy who had a serious arterial bleed after cutting his left arm, 15 hour operation, nerves removed from his foot to make his hand work again. The A&E nurse told him that she sees at least 10-15 injured Arb guys a week with serious lacerations, these are fully PPE’d guys so not domestic users, this is ONE hospital.
  2. Stihl & Husqvarna make excellent battery saws but the initial outlay would be excessive if you don’t intend using the batteries for other tools. Makita would be the best option, you may already have access to the batteries from other hand tools.
  3. If full time professional climbers here in the U.K. where anywhere near as good/safe as they think they are, we wouldn’t be in this two rope situation in the first place.
  4. First UK death has just been confirmed.
  5. This could be the issue, the rails may be splayed with the heat caused by the excessively tight chain being run, the chain could now be moving slightly from side to side in the groove and not cutting properly.
  6. That’s excellent news as I will be looking to fill up some time, and borrow a Massey when I arrive in the Summer.
  7. Is there a large chestnut coppice industry in your area Mick, post and rail etc or is it mostly cut for firewood?
  8. My stove mounted thermometer would certainly disagree.
  9. I have never encountered chestnut being difficult to dry or giving out poor heat, quite the reverse, the Romans introduced it as a quick growing timber for multiple uses including smelting Iron.
  10. I burn it all the time in my burner, fantastic stuff, burns away leaving minimum ash in the pan. If you look at the sapwood to heartwood ratio on a cross section there is no hardwood comes anywhere close in comparison. Splits easier than any wood I know and dries quickly when stored correctly. I tend to cut out all the standing dead in a compartment and run it to my wood store already seasoned.
  11. America: the only country to go from barbarism to decadence without civilization in-between. Oscar Wilde.
  12. What if he fell whilst disconnected from his second rope for a “short duration” whilst performing a changeover?
  13. And hammer the companies who directly employ these idiots who climb on poorly maintained gear and fail in their duties already laid out in law under “The Management of Health &Safety at Work Act”
  14. We are heading over at Easter for a look around the region then moving over in the Summer when I have tied up all the loose ends here, can’t wait, just need to improve my poor French!
  15. Cheers Mick.
  16. Beautiful area, I am looking at buying a family house there in the Summer, is your wife still involved with real estate? Perhaps you could PM her company details?
  17. What region of France are you in, has it been wet all over like here in the UK or isolated?
  18. Unless you need to do all your tickets now for a job, I would say get some work as a groundy, watch and ask questions, earn some money and do the tickets one at a time and consolidate your skills at work before moving on to the next. Nothing worse to watch in my book than a six week ticketed know it all with zero experience.
  19. Two wonderful gifts, a sweet name, have you got a name yet Gand? and congratulations to both of you. Tyson Fury was born 3 months early and weighed one pound, he’s doing all right now though.?
  20. That is fascinating, I wouldn’t have believed it from a country with such an extensive forestry industry.
  21. Why would Norway import Birch when it has 75% Birch Forest? I would be surprised if they import large amounts for the domestic firewood market.
  22. The type of wood people burn generally depends on what grows in that particular area. High altitude/low temperature areas generally don’t grow much in the way of broadleaf so they will be burning softwood. Norway’s forests are made up of around 75% Birch, which is why it is the most widely used, in most firewood calorific value charts Birch sits right between two softwoods, Pine and Douglas Fir.
  23. I think on this form Fury would beat Joshua. It would be great to see Fury v Joshua, if Fury wins then there is a Wilder trilogy for him to retire on, if AJ wins, a Wilder V AJ would be a completely different style of fight.
  24. I thought these bullshit bills where a thing of the past that where only made up in Brussels, apparently not. I think this is less about pollution and more about Government vat losses on gas and oil as more people turn to wood fuels. How much is it going to cost to set up a department to police and deal with this issue?
  25. Why eco plugs? Just spray the fresh stumps with roundup at 10% with a long lance on a knapsack sprayer.
