In the original post he says that he will have to go back to chip up so that's 4 50 min journeys before anything else to consider.

Why would you post that if it wasn't next to a road then a climber and a grounder could smash it out in a day? That's like saying if there wasn't a wall or road there or the power cable and if you had a whole tree chipper to take it in one go then the job could be done in 2 hours. The guy has posted for opinions on price for the job as described. Sure we will all have different ways of doing it as we all operate different set ups but no one can alter the situation of the job or it hazards.

So there is 50 mins drive each way then 40 mins work in a tricky situation, then you have go back to clear up so another 50 mins each way travel and chipping up etc. £100 is not a realistic price in my business set up, for 1 man and chipper doing all that traveling then clearing up then I would charge £400 plus vat.

How can you get housing and child benefit when you own a company? Are you saying the government pays your benefits?

There are 2 stump only company's in my area, I can't charge as little as them and won't. I aim for my grinder to pay its finance payment each month minimum, anything on top is a bonus. I have won a number of jobs because I can offer a full service, come in take the tree out, grind the stump out and leave at the end of the day with the job done. I am not relying on others to fit it in or possibly to be let down. Most customers like to pay 1 invoice for the lot and forget about it. If I go in to cut the tree and then have to arrange the other guy to come in its all hassle and if I only make a little bit on top it's not worth it. With the HB 20 it will fit most places and grind most stumps no matter how big. I put a price in then they can take it or leave it.

The thread is 5 years old, I'm not trying to put the guy down but he's on about doing the job for as little as possible and making money from the wood a year down the line, we all know how that story ends don't we. I'd like to know where he "borrowed signs from while stump grinding next to a school?? Taking big trees down over a house with an old guy helping you?? ( rescue ticket, insurance, Risk assessment, climbing ticket etc????) the post reeks of everything we have been trying to get away from in this industry! -

That's all well and good but we're in England not the US, if I go to a customers house to look at a tree then there is a reason they have called me, some ask what would you advise and some ask how much to remove this. If I can offer advice on the 120 year old oak that they want a Heavy reduction in then I can only advise against it and offer other solutions but at the end of the day I will carry out what they want as I have a living to earn, if I baffle them with technical jargon etc they will just get someone else in as they didn't have a clue what I was on about. Depending on the attitude and personality of the customer determines how I play the situation. I would never take advantage of vulnerable people with trees but if they want it out I will oblige.

Yes if what I am led to believe is correct. All the farmers round me look after the verge trees bordering their land. That's where they get their firewood from!!
