  1. I had Amstrad 901 with a k40 in the attic, I was a home baser, handle was big spender. Happy days. Sent from my I pad coz I'm gullible for buying apple products!
  2. Take a look in the back of land rover owner mag, there are loads in there.
  3. Hi Pete, welcome to the forum, why not just leave the timber for the firewood fairy's, it will go overnight.
  4. You found it in a skip? Wow what a find, it looks aweseome.
  5. I once got a really dirty porn mag through the post, I had ordered it though:)
  6. I really agree on the weekly target thing, I run like this, I have low overheads so it makes it a bit easier in the quite times. This leads to the key of how to run YOUR buisness, know your overheads in your sleep, know exactly how much you need to make at all times, know you buisness like your women:) it has taken me 10 years to work out what works and what doesn't, I've had the 2 vans, valmet& botex etc and it didn't suit me, I now have a slim line operation and I'm happy. it's a really good thread this and people can learn from it.
  7. Tom, I understand where you are coming from, in an ideal world we would all like to charge more for the hard and often dangerous work we do, in reality though it doesn't work like that FOR ME, I have in the past tried to charge more and I lost more than I won, I now know how my buisness works the best and that's how I operate. I think the key to this thread is to find what works for you and do it as what may work well for you may not work well for the next guy. I price all my jobs by the job not the time and this is the best way to work IMO.
  8. You have to tell the customer you are charging vat, it's illegal if you dont
  9. You should try asking your customers if they would still use you if you charged vat, I did and found many would find a non vat reg company to do the work just to save that 20%. If I go and price a job at £500 + vat and the next guy comes and quotes £500 no Vat then most customers will use the non vat reg guy. If they pay cash and you put it through the books then you will pay vat on it, then you have lost out.
  10. Meindl Airstreams for me too:)
  11. I will replace them, I look after my gear, I too bought on finance and now it's paid off I charge the same and stash that away for a rainy day. This has started from Tom saying a 2 man crew should be turning over 80 grand, which In my case and most of the crews in my area is not feessble. Like I said before I make a good living out of this and my operation works well, everybody's company's are different. I have low overheads as I own my yard and land/barns etc. I have little advertising costs. And the profit I make is re invested in my buisness. I don't employ as I have found this was a problem in the past so I use self employed where needed.
  12. Yes I could replace the stuff of I had to. I don't work alone I have a subby climber I use and a subby Groundie I use when needed. I charge enough to cover insurance, repairs renewals, wages etc. what I was trying to get across to you is that each buisness is different, I do things how they suit me best and what you are suggesting may work for you but it wouldn't work for me. There are a couple of vat reg company's near me that do the council stuff but all the others arnt vat reg. at the end of the day turn over is vanity and profit is sanity. I make enough profit to do all right and that's what matters.
  13. You really are a mile off Tom, I don't employ, I have a truck that's paid for, I have a chipper that's paid for, a stumpy that's paid for etc. I earn well over 10k. 90% of my work is private. I make a decent living from doing this . Maybe where you are that's how it is but up here it's a cut throat industry and I charge a fair price and do a good job.
  14. I hit the vat limit last year, I had to make the choice and I decided not to register. If I did I would go out of buisness. None of my direct competitors are vat reg, when I go and look at work and give a quote most people ask if there is vat to be added. On the stuff we buy and need from say shops etc we pay the vat as we have no choice but when it comes to trades because of the vat limit people will allways want to avoid paying it and know they can by getting the small guy.
  15. I disagree, if I turned over 80 grand I would have to be vat reg, I would then loose most of my customers, I would then have no work. In an ideal world maybe your right but in reality it's not like that. To say we are doing something wrong if we're not turning over 80k is a daft statement.
  16. I had a lady call today who I sold a nice bag of 1 year old barn stored Ash, she asked if I had anything that burnt hotter?? She said that it stays in for a long time but give no heat. I burn it on my burner every night and its like an inferno, so not sure what she is up to
  17. I'm with littletree, ring up planing dept and give postcode of the location, I do this quite alot, especially as the lake district national park authority have changed the conservation areas in Windermere recently. I have done work at a house for a number of years without issue, then in October the street got letters saying they were now inside the boundary of the conservation area. Allways best to check:)

  24. I know of a young lady who at the age of 16 was asked what she was going to do now she was leaving school, her reply "get pregnant and get a council house and benefits, you gotta work the system"???? She should have been shot!
  25. He still has to pay for a processor though, how can he do them for 35 wuid
