  1. There is privet around and I know it likes poor soil. I'll compare it with a known trees, thanks. If it does turn out to be privet, should I just leave it or cut it down? I don't want to lose the conifers as they're hiding a barn
  2. Most things won't grow underneath a conifer, it seems, but this is doing OK - any idea what it is?
  3. Bamboo?
  4. Not a sausage. Only the photos of a very handsome chap walking away having just turned the camera on... I've moved it now, closer to where the damage was, so will see what happens
  5. Mine is a complete pain in the 'arris. So much that after about half an hour of it starting and then dieing immediately, it was put down with a little more force than was strictly necessary. As a result, I have to replace some throttle parts as didn't find them all...
  6. That's what high seats are for! Although there is provision for shotgun use in the deer act, it would leave someone potentially open to prosecution if they can't conclusively prove that the deer were causing damage. Personally, I think rifles are more humane and there are many who agree with me. Going to check the camera shortly to see if it's spotted anything...
  7. I'm hoping to find out soon but haven't got it back yet
  8. It's not something I'd like to condone and the BDS, for example, is against the practice. Plenty of rifle shooters around that can do the job, humanely, for free
  9. It did with the last one
  10. I'd rather shoot them with my .223
  11. Wish I were closer! Put a post on Woodalert (Facebook)
  12. Hope it is muntjac... haven't had a chance to check the camera yet...
  13. Interesting. Anything I can look for to definitively prove the culprit? I have seen a roe deer in that area so definitely a suspect...
  14. They're tiny little trees, less than 1cm diameter, wouldn't the roe choose one of the bigger ones nearby? I'm thinking it might be rabbits now but I have a trailcam set up to hopefully catch one in the act
  15. A little birch and a willow had been stripped of bark up to about a foot from the ground, causing them to die. Is this likely to be rabbits or deer?
  16. My alder, planted last year, are mostly doing pretty well but as a result, they have large crowns, big leaves on quite small stems. One of them had been blown by the wind so much that the tube had kinked: I had to take the tube off but the stem was so bendy the tree couldn't support itself. I've staked it up the best I can but shouldn't it be strong enough to support it's own weight by now?
  17. Don't spray chemicals, please... The weeds will die down in the winter and if the coppice is well established I'd have thought they won't be too bothered by the competition.
  18. I'd hazard a guess at a camellia of some sort. Member of the tea family
  19. Nice way of passing the time. Can you not just cut or crush the last bits?
  20. Can I ask why you are keen to spray in your own woodland? It provides good cover for game and dies down in the winter anyway when you're likely to be extracting logs.
  21. I have an Oregon log cradle that makes it easy to cut loads of thin wood in one go with a chainsaw. Maybe not as quick as a branch logger but a damn site cheaper and you can cut the logs to whatever length you like. I use it for cutting willow coppice into 4" chunks for charcoal making but also for full sized logs for the fire
  22. Thanks. Seems to be surviving OK and hopefully once it gets a bit bigger the thicker twigs will be more resilient. Going to need some ground litter to start mulching out the weeds anyway!
  23. Most of my alder is doing really well, with the whips up over 6' and thickening up nicely. However, I notice quite a few of the branches have snapped, presumably in the wind - is alder particularly susceptible to this or is it just because they're the first young trees to get to that size and they have large leaves that catch the wind?
  24. So leave the branch where it is? Don't want it to fall over when it gets bigger. Thanks for advice anyway
  25. This poor fellow was smothered by leylandii and has grown sideways to try and get a bit of light. The offenders have since been given their marching orders but I'm wondering what to do next: Thinking the branch on the right needs to come off but should I cut it now or wait until winter?
