  1. If you have 40 minutes to spare.....................
  2. Some educational stuff on youtube as usual. This guy says he is certified, if he isn't he definitely should be!
  3. Thanks for all the replies If you had a 44 inch diameter tree to cut down and had a choice of two chainsaws one with a 48 inch bar and the other with a 24 inch bar, is there a situation where any of you would choose the smaller saw perhaps for more control and ease of use?
  4. Just wondered what the largest diameter tree anyone has felled when you only have a small chainsaw I know the technique but have never tried it. I have often done the double plunge from either side leaving a felling tab I realise that you need to leave a slightly thicker hinge to compensate for the bit you cut through in the middle I am sure I read somewhere that you should be able to cut down a tree two and a half times the length of the bar. Felling trees greater than twice the guide bar length - Husqvarna WWW.HUSQVARNA.COM Follow this felling technique when removing tree greater than twice the guide bar length.
  5. The ulnar collateral ligament can remain in one piece but pull a piece of bone away from where it attaches at the base of the thumb. This is called an avulsionfracture. Skier's Thumb causes pain and swelling. Your skin may bruise and appear discolored
  6. Palmar perforation is the same as volar radio carpal perforation. Palmar radiocarpal ligament - Wikipedia EN.M.WIKIPEDIA.ORG I will look up thumb avulsion but it sounds like you look at your injured thumb and go “ Yuk” !
  7. Sorry if this has been seen before. A 2010 study from Sweden of hand injuries from splitters https://www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:346971/FULLTEXT01.pdf
  8. Plenty of life left in these well built machines. The circular saw beats a chainsaw every time, like a knife through butter when sharp. This is a useful thread from four years ago, shows my modifications.
  9. Totally agree with you on this one. My machine is also about 1995 and has done a lot of work for a quarter of a century with no problems at all apart from the fact that when a log decides to be awkward and fall crossways it will do so. I made a simple foot control pedal which has the additional benefit when cutting smaller diameter stuff without the splitting knife, I can cut half a dozen logs without triggering the ram, which makes the job a lot faster. I made a log deck and there is a certain amount of manual work but no heavy lifting, I prefer it like that to keep warm rather than sitting on a seat or in a cab just pulling levers all day.
  10. x27 definitely punches above its weight. I feel that it may be easier to achieve a high velocity with a lighter axe than a heavy one. I read stories of variable steel quality but all I can say is I have been very impressed with the head, in the six years of ownership I have never had to sharpen it, never chipped it and the shape I think has been carefully thought out so that it seems to explode the logs and as I said before it is easy to extract. (I do not work for Fiskars nor receive any rewards from them!)
  11. The main thing with the X27 is that it is relatively light so easier to swing hard all day, but very importantly it is very easy to extract from a recalcitrant log. For a long day's work it would be my choice.
  12. I would feel a bit of a prick going around with that one! The only one I found amusing was this one but now I see it has been done too many times.
  13. Billhooks is the answer to everything!
  14. Bugger that for a test. Invasion of privacy!
  15. I was shown around Waddesdon Gardens, near Aylesbury, Bucks a few weeks ago and the mossies came out of the yew hedges and we were bitten to near death. Went out into the meadows to try and avoid them and were still bitten. Had to leave which was a shame as I really wanted to see the rest of the gardens.
  16. Just bought these scales. Always wanted to know the weight of logs, one ton boxes full of different split wood varieties, and the weight of the same box full of branch loggings. They can weigh things up to two tons and are accurate to one kg i thought that we might have a lockdown competition to see if you can guess the weights of those logs above The largest sycamore has been down for over a year It is 32 inches at one end and 33 inches at the other and 147 inches long The shorter one is 26 inches x 120 inches The Ash log is 15 inches x 90 inches Perhaps Steve can think of a prize for the winner
  17. Dammit! YouTube have taken down the links!
  18. Thanks for the like Johnpl315 Things are looking up as I have had two comments on Youtube already inviting me to have sex with some young Russian girls! Must be something to do with the size of my log and erecting it!
  19. Well they arrived today and I have to say I am very impressed. There were two large lumps of Sycamore, the first was awkward having many cut off branches and the second was very heavy, making all of the red overload lights come on in the Teleporter which is rated at 2,7 tons with the boom in but the boom was about halfway out so it may well have been near the 1500kg capacity of the tongs. It was about on the 1300mm limit of the jaws also With the previous set of Stihl tongs I often had to go and hammer the spikes into the log but I could just drop these ones over and it gripped first time every time. No trouble to knock off sideways either and an additional feature was the 360 degree swivel which makes manoeuvring the log easy when lowering to position it for the Lucas Mill. It came to £128 plus VAT which was less than I thought and about the same price as the Stihl ones.
  20. Yes, Stage 1 V8 used by Southern Electric I believe with a cherry picker. Local man fitted Ifor Williams tipping trailer body and blacksmith built crane (surprisingly good) The propshaft goes out to the central axle and goes straight through it to the rear axle so it always has the rear four wheels engaged although there are no difflocks across the axles so in the right conditions it can be down to three wheel drive Just remembered this video I made to prove the point!
  21. Sandringham 6 built by Hotspur cars, 3500 V8. Six wheel drive 16 speed gearbox with centre difflock, electro-hydraulic tipping body that will carry 2 tons and crane that will lift 30 cwt. Hell of a tool just a shame that I cannot afford the petrol so it remains in my shed for old classics!
  22. Hardly recognised Joanna Lumley in the trailer!
