  1. In the top picture it has become apparent that the grain in the foreground this side of the whiter patch has some spalting and is on the cusp of starting to decay and although it still feels hard and heavy, is more absorbent and takes the oil much easier than the other which also is where the trunk divided and has very hard grain, Time will tell!
  2. If the wife is happy , I am not going to stop her! Happy wife happy life!
  3. Dear wife has just put the tenth and last coat of Tung oil on. We have put some different legs on which we are happy with
  4. I decided not to use resin so used wood glue and the fine sawdust from the sanding. Seemed to work. So my wife has put at least half a dozen coats of Tung oil. How should we finish it off or is that ok. Does it need sealing with something or left to breathe?
  5. Can you take me through the whole process. What saw did you cut the slab with, how did you plane it and sand it and what oils did you use and how did you apply the oils/ varnish and how many coats My wife has ordered some squarer legs and I will post a piccy if they look ok And did you fill the cracks or just leave them
  6. Yes those legs look much more sturdy than the X shaped ones
  7. First attempt at dining table. My wife has been busy with the Tung oil. We used the Lucas planer then the Lucas sander both worked well and were easy to set up. Having trouble deciding on the legs. Initially tried three X shaped black metal but they looked too much like a trestle table, sprayed them gold, better but not right.
  8. Thanks for those answers, I think I already knew that it was too far gone, anyway it will still probably outlast me, so next generations problem!
  9. The other morning there was an awful noise as this huge branch split from the main trunk. No wind at all, the cracking a groaning sounded like a firework display Anyway it is one of half a dozen that stand on the garden boundary and they are very fine trees and healthy and we want to do our best to keep them. The question is how best to stop water entering the split and rot the trunk. I have used Arbrex successfully in smaller area but this would need a large amount. Are there any other mixes that I could make that would not cost too much to fill the split? I tried to push the remains of the limb into the main trunk with the telehandler boom to make the hole smaller, but it would not move even an inch and the telehandler has quite a lot of pushing power. Must be reaction wood
  10. Sorry about that, now on YouTube. Are they copulating?
  11. Still wrestling now fifteen minutes later!
  12. I thought that I had been taught everything I needed to know about this subject but can somebody please tell me what is going on here, and looking at the subjects five minutes later, still going on!
  13. Yes, there are several about.
  14. Can any of you bird lovers identify this feather? It looks a bit raptorish to me
  15. here is the link to the app, has anyone here used it? ‎Wood Identifier: AI Scanner APPS.APPLE.COM ‎Discover the Secrets of Nature with Wood Scanner AI Have you ever gazed at a towering tree or admired a piece of wood, wondering about its story, species, or unique characteristics...
  16. Can anyone recommend a good Wood Id app for sawn timber. I have great confidence in Picturethis app for plant id and another for insects
  17. On a slightly more positive note, I used to see dozens of those little silver NO2 containers which seem to have gone out of fashion, together with vape bottles. There was a time when we had endless old cars dumped on the farm which has stopped. The only amusing waste was a thorn bush by a remote lay-by which continued to be decorated with girl's knickers of all different bright colours. There must have been twenty pairs at one time, quite an erection!

Today I went in my bike ride around the circuit to find two more freshly discarded cans of Carling. It is as though someone saw my post and has given me two fingers!
  19. Just wondering if school kids should have a day picking up, shielded by a big tractor at either end and a safe trailer in between with several adults in hi vis dealing with the traffic. This would maybe kill two birds with one stone. Firstly people would be angry at being held up but then more angry at the litter. Secondly if the kids see their parents throw stuff out they May say “ if you do that I gotta pick it up” it must start with children being taught There is very little litter in Denmark , I think they are brought up there to be proud of their country what about bringing back deposits on items if they are returned In fact what was wrong with glass coke and milk bottle? Certainly tastes better out of glass
  20. Just took the Kawasaki Mule out to collect the rubbish thrown out of vehicles on a three-quarter mile stretch by our home 126 Carling cans , a dozen Coke/ Red Bull/Fosters and a bin liner full of other waste I put up a trail cam, but the trouble is that vehicles are much quicker than wildlife and by the time the camera is activated they are out of range or the .ights interfere

  21. Yes I think I agree that the barcode idea would have problems but the children idea might work. Interestingly in Denmark where children are taught to love their country there is no litter around
  22. I hope at some time it may be possible to print a barcode on say cans and cigarette packets to identify who bought them and where Another possibility is to give school children a day of picking up rubbish, with perhaps a tractor protecting them at either end and a trailer bin in the middle. Firstly it would instill in them a sense of responsibility and secondly if they see their mum or dad do it they might say “ Dad , if you chuck that out I gotta pick the xxxxxx up!”
  23. About 15 years ago on my circuit there is a remote lay-by where someone had dumped a boot full of rubbish. He had left a number of letters with his home address not very far away. I reported him to the council in the days when we had a good bloke in charge of such things, he had to come out and verify as apparently people will plant letters of people that dislike and report them. Anyway I was expecting no result but about three months later it said in the paper that “a man has been fined for littering at ….” So it worked in those days but I was disappointed to see that his name was withheld. I did think that the recent littering might be some kind of vendetta but unlikely after all this time. i think I will stick by my earlier theory of some workers buying a carton of Carling at the garage three miles away ( I have also found the cardboard cartons) and drinking a can in the time it takes to arrive here Some suggested putting up a trail cam as the police would be more interested in drunk driving, but it may be the passengers who are guilty
