  1. Hi is that the moisture content all the way through the log or just as far as the probes penetrate on the outer sides of the log. What are you useing for fans to force the warm air through. Cheers Chris.
  2. Hi I have only spoken them once on the phone very helpful and a very keen price just used it to beet Jim up with at caledonian. This day and age of overnight deliveries it would not put me off dealing with them. Cheers Chris.
  3. Yes they do have there own weighers but the bigger mills have there own weigh bridges as well and also if you buy from FC wales as I do I also have to supply a public weigh ticket as I do not have a weighbridge in my yard. Cheers Chris
  4. Hi there good luck . Any way here is my personal experiance started with a chainsaw and axe first winter very soon got a hydraulic splitter, then came a palax 600 this was 1995 when wilsons were the agents there were not many processors to choose from then.A very good machine simple to use quick and very reliable, also held there value well and so changed it every 3 years with only the blade to sharpen occaisionly and 2 new belts each year just to be safe. By 1997 up to 750 cube a winter by 2000 1200 cube and 2003 1500 cube on my own and still just a palax 600 tsve chainsaw and hydraulic splitter so you can grow without a lot of expensive tackle if you work hard. The people who actualy use palax processors are usually very pleased with them, after all they have just had there 60th anniversiary so must be doing some thing right. After 20 years at it I am still with Palax but it is now Caledonian the agent and Jim Watt there will do you a good deal.It was only last year I bought a log deck as my knees and back were suffering, but you need something to load a deck with so more investment. As I say this is my personal experiance hope some of it helps. Cheers Chris.
  5. I think the original post was for 26 tonne load now as long as it comes with with public weighbridge ticket to con firm weight there should be no difference in volume what ever lenght it is cut to.I agree I would like to buy stuff that has been down for ages as it loses weight but the the seller usualy wants to sell by volume ie cubic metres. If this is the case then you will get more in 4 bays of 2.5 than 3bays of 3m.This is why I rum my own lorry and trailer as can carry 4 bays of 2.3 2.5 or 3m. Cheers Chris.
  6. Hi I put a vigas 25 in our new house in 2004 got it from Dunster in devon only the 2nd one in the country then.Runs 16 radiators and 3 bathrooms .It has been wonderful it was cheap to buy fitted in the boiler room easily no acumalator tank or expensive pipes.has been no problem for 11years now and still going well.Only needed a fuse and some new rope on the fire box door.It is very easy to light even my 3 youg daughters manage to operate it easily enough.I use mix of soft wood and hardwood but cut them to 45 cm as they are easier to load.If it is only for your house these seem ideal just because it was cheap does not seem to have made it nasty and I think they are still around. Hope this is of some help Chris.
  7. Hi just been looking at some hakki specs, easy 42 weight 1 tonne splitter ram 3tonne to 13tonne optional 6 or8 way splitting axe ,surely not enough for 40cm timber so a lot of re splitting. Easy 50 2.1 tonne splitting ram 4tonne to 30tonne and optional 12 or 16way axe. One thing worrys me says it has 25 litre hydraulic oil capacity seems very small for a large splitter. I would sugest it is more than twice the machine BUT only if you feed it constantly with good straight 40cm to 50 cm timber. Cheers Chris
  8. Sorry I thought you meant metal as in bits of old railings that trees have grown through. The tct blades will go straight through the odd little nail and not need sharpening let alone knock a tip off.I buy all my timber from FC in large lots as I want well grown and harvested timber .Thats why I am not interested in arb waste. Cheers Chris.
  9. Yes started in 1995in sussex regularly did 1400 to 1500 cubic metre loads every year with palax 600 and 600tsve all 3m hardwood pulp hand balled everything through these processors anything oversize was split with binderberger gigant 30t .Moved to Wales in 2005 and started all over again moved up to the palax 100s but getting on in years now so bought my first log deck this time last year. Here in Pembrokeshire there is a lt less population and more widely spread out. Hence only about 1000 cube now. Cheers Chris
  10. Looks great seems a pity to take it apart to burn it. Happy newyear all Chris.
  11. Hi yes thought sales were a bit slow in N ovember but December went mad out every day 5 or 6 loads think they were putting off buying till near xmas.plenty of orders for early new year butmaybe then it will slow but get a couple of frosts and the phone will light up again. Yes cord or hadwood pulp as it used to be has got to silly money but at least it might stabilize or even drop slightly .As for cheap firewood has anyone bought any and was it any good. Some of my customers have tried and come straight back to me.One lot round me is even closed for a fortnight over xmas and newyear!Plenty others advertise but I never seem to see them out and about. Anyway you seem to have a good thing with you friend and your kindling I am sure ther are years of log burning to go I thought the same 20 years ago when most customers were rather old but more new ones came along than old ones passed away. Happy newyear Chris.
  12. Where are you getting your wood from with metal in ,would reuse to pay for it and tell them to come and pick it up and take it away. My palax with tungsten blade regulary cuts 1000 cubic metres hardwood on 1 blade then off to shop ,sharp and set cost £20 + vat I make that about 2p a cube still on the same blade for 6 years. No oil for lube no chains or files or bars and spr ockets.Cuts up to 40cm and less sawdust, this must be consideration if good hardwood is £50 ish a tonne. Glad you like your machine and I would like to see one being used in a proper operation not just on 2 minute demos on straight softwood at shows. Cheers Chris.
  13. What sort of size logs will you be doing 25cm 35cm 50cm and how many pieces per log ,a 40cm round will surely require a 12 way splitter will the tafjun handle this all day.Just interesred because there seems to be a lot of interest in this machine.Would be interested to know how much sawdust you end up with. Cheers Chris.
  14. Glad to hear it is up and runing again and good back up.Quick trade it in for a new circular saw model before it goes wrong again. Cheers Chris
  15. Well where to start here, What length is the load deck of the lorry, how many bays has it and how tall are the pins? You say 6m long logs they must be very straight or it will be a nightmare to load. A quick guide 1 bay 2.4m long 2.3mwide 2m high @ 55% if straight= 6 cubic metres If you can get 3 bays on that is 18 cubic metres 6m long 2.3m wide 2m high if straight @55%=15.18 cubic metres 1 year old oak probably a ton a metre Load it up with poplar and probably be lucky to get 10 or12 tons As for price depends on quality and your location. If it is 12" plus could be difficult as everyone wants under 12" for there little processors. Don t know if this helps but that s my 2 pennorth. Cheere Chris
  16. Quite agree the palax combi range is easy to use ,simple, and been around since the mid 90s Very good on bent and twisted timber and about as fast as you would want to go .A good secondhand one from Jim at Caledonian would a good buy. Been with Palax since 1995 so am biased but would not even consider a chainsaw model so that rules out the tajfun. Will be interesting to see what they are like after several years if the electrics last that long. Happy Christmas all Chris.
  17. Not very big lots the haulage will be expensive but down here in west wales just offered some hardwood processor size though did not say what size processor £55 tonne roadside. Is there any end in sight for timber prices to stop rising weekly!! Look what has happened to oil prices the last month. Cheers Chris.
  18. I have noticed the drop in fuel prices recently and am noticing a difference especially in the lorry, save about £20 a load at the moment not to be sneezed at! .Also insurance has dropped as well and road tax the same as last year.Have kept prices same as last winter and good steady trade this autum.Tell my customers why price the same and they seem to appreciete it. Cheers all Chris.
  19. You and everyone else on here all want hardwood cord! Try woodlots magazine just google it ,should come up with web site or forestry commission E sales or you local timber haulier might be able to help. Cheers Chris.
  20. Hi bob what sort of kiln have you got and where did you get. I think I will have to get one it has not stopped rainig foe about a month now here in pembrokeshire.Shed nearly empty now hopefully get a couple of dry days to fill it back up. Cheers Chris.
  21. Anyone know where I can get a 10 or 12 way axe for palax 100s other than a new one from caledonian. Thanks Chris.
  22. Yes agree with that thats why I offer softwood as well 1 cubic metre loose logs delivered in pembrokeshire is £75 hardwoods £50 softwoods Available all year round. Cheers Chris
  23. Looked at this at the APF shame it is not a circular saw what tonnage the splitter? other thing I did not like was the joy stick and silly electric buttons can see that being a problem also looks a bit flimsy would like to see one with about 5000 tonnes through it see how it stands up. Lots of people on here seem to be talking about them so time will tell. Are they cheep then. Cheers Chris.
  24. You cannot compete wit that they are probably getting the wood for nothing as well. how much volume in the cage is it all hardwood or softwood or mixed how much are you charging and does it include delivery. If you have just started it will take time to build a reputation and get a regular client list but if you stick to providing a quality product and a good service you should keep busy . It is very mild at the moment but once we get a frost the phones will start ringing, winter has not started yet but it will come. Cheers Chris
  25. Hi 11ton splitter not enough if you want to do 50 cm long logs. Is the dun machine a blade or chain presumably wit the number 420 it will cut 40 cm dia logs get one of those 50 cm long and knotty and split it 8 ways and I bet it will get well jammed. My palax 100 has 18 ton and is about right I would say so I would say look for a 16 to 20 ton splitter on a bigger processor. That is what puts me off the posch 350 or 360 only 12 ton and have seen them stop on 30 cm logs with 6way. Cheers Chris
