  1. Using which sort of mill and is there mileage on top? Just curious to know what I am up against😉
  2. don't you just love the customers who bring you firewood to mill, I had somebody turn up with some yew bits that were only 24" long a few weeks back.... As for larch, go for it , am currently machining up cladding that I have cut and dried ,9" x 1", approx. 800mts of it, it seems endless...... oh for a big four sided planer!
  3. Ker ching....... wimmer mill soon then...
  4. Speak to Marcus or Graham @Loglogic(01884 839 999) ,both top blokes, I am sure they will have the info available, below, are current engine, hydraulic specs used on Autotreks: 4 cylinder Lombardini LDW 2204CHD, 49Kw (67hp turbo), water cooled diesel pack • 30kw Closed loop hydrostatic transmission to the Saw Head. • 24 l/min Auxiliary Gear pump for log handling and cutting controls. hope this helps Tim
  5. How much do you want? Squares or boards,I only ask as you are primarily a turner.
  6. Correct Jon,have cut similar sized elms some years ago in Cambridgeshire, not many that size left around me now, mostly small hedgerow stuff sadly. Would love to cut more of it,make a pleasant change from ash and oak. Would agree with your comments regarding mills, that size of log needs something bigger than W/M et al, and would be a sin to create so much sawdust with a chain mill.
  7. Where are the trees? As a mobile miller I might be able to help, trees of that size no problem,pm me if at all interested, although having just re read thread from start.....i might have to charge you mileage....as I am in s.norfolk
  8. Big J, I suspect there is a building regs man with a clipboard behind the initial enquiry...Dry 8x8.....yeah right... and if that is the case, the use of soft wood in place of "dry Oak" would no doubt require a massive increment in section to be used to cover posteriors etc, with possible additional structural engineers costs...but it still might be the cheaper option.. as for possible suppliers, try "associated timber"honeypot lane, nr grantham, lincs. but be sitting down when they tell you the price if it is truly dry.
  9. Certainly is using a Loglogic derived head( Trekkasaw/Autotrek), so max width of cut would be 1000mm, it may be able to handle 60" dia logs by system cutting..... but hardly mobile in my humble opinion, and if any body would like to give me 12k for my Autotrek I would listen to the offer as contemplating renewing my mill. Have contacted various suppliers, but not Wimmer(drooling at the thought, but logistics of towing probably precludes)not on the list, so Big J if you would oblige, be grateful of indication of costs for their smallest mill. Have to say that the "other German" red sawmills agent was a little sketchy with his knowledge of his product and as of yet, 1 week later, has yet to come up with a price......
  10. Tracking of the wheels, with such a narrow band I suspect it it hyper sensitive to the tracking, check bearings of wheels also so that cutting side(assuming you have front & back bearings on wheel spindle) doesn't deform when tensioning blade therefore affecting tracking......just a thought.
  11. mainland domestic is 12.2p/kw/hr but for seven years, commercial is 20yrs as far as I am aware
  12. I have used it turned for chisel handles in the workshop, works a bit like boxwood, and takes a mallet hitting it no probs..... not sure I would construct anything from it tho.
  13. or "curl", which I think is what your pictures show......and what a veneer merchant would understand it to be, but then its 20+ years since I bought curl veneers:001_huh:
  14. flat if cutting c/w horizontal blade
  15. don't quarter it.... T&T, crown cut boards most attractive , and the timber is stable so why quarter saw it? and cut it so the "Y" is flat so you get some flame.
  16. Difflock, whilst looking at a band sharpening machine (German) website ,I came across this list as "European "makers of mobile bandsaws...... Hartenberger Holzhäuer Logosol Mebor Pezzolato Resch&3 SERRA Wood-Mizer Zenz / Wimmer sorry but CBA to provide links, but Uncle Google will, some of which may be of interest . Others are just mobile band saw pornography.....have fun. Tim
  17. Try contacting Robin Carter @ " Timber Resources", based in Liphook, he will know all you have asked, he might divulge the info. Failing that,Marcus or Graham @ Loglogic, but as the current manufacturers they might be reluctant, but both top top blokes...
  18. autotrek run on crowned stainless belts on cast alloy wheels, cleaned by bronze/brass scrapers, rubber coverings to band wheels in my mind equate to "toy town" machine with the rubber cancelling out machining in accuracy of components......cheap and nasty springs to mind......
  19. I use a MS880 c/w 48" Stihl bar, the motor is all I expected, but does have a lot of vibration, the bar however is nothing short of c**p, it is used for splitting lengthwise large logs prior to milling, but has too much flex, wish I had just purchased the motor unit and gone Canon or Sugi or GB(if I could in the UK)
  20. sorry, but you heard wrong!
  21. From memory, holm oak has very pronounced medullary ray to it near or on the quarter, not dissimilar to OP's picture, I honestly cannot remember the sap band being so large though , but I know that Turkey does have that broad band. The Holm oaks that grow near to me never achieve that straight clean form, but Turkey Oak can, both are as dense as iron and heavy to handle producing a very fine dust off the blade as opposed to a more granular dust from a sessile etc . If I was speculating, OP's timber is Turkey oak, and Big J's with that almost spalted discolouration near heart is Holm, but then its almost 10 years since I cut either and I will try to avoid cutting them in the future. but one thing the OP's timber is not ,is brown Oak!
  22. Hhhmmm, tend to agree. Would also like to see pics of roller system that enables 1 man to get a log weighing up to 1/4 ton( given system can handle 9"QG @ almost 10ftlong and longer with available extensions) onto cutting deck @ waist ht. But otherwise I could see it meeting all of the claims made in the description on the web page. Tim
  23. had the same, lived with it for 6 months, then went to doctors, no messing with physio, straight to cortisone injection in elbow the following week...... cured after 2 days of more pain than was, but elbow is now fine, except for some unknown reason, wrist on same side is now playing up big time, so much so I cannot make a fist.
  24. thanks for the info Jon, shall have a gander tonight!
