  1. Have you tried contacting LANTRA? Not sure if they can help you with direct training, but maybe they can help with contacts?.... Lantra - Lantra | Contact us | Sector Skills Council | training | business
  2. As much as i like listening to music, just enjoying the natural sounds in the woods gives me plenty enough joy..... and thats where using hand tools, Silky saws, Austrian scythe, etc really comes into it's own.
  3. Not sure on the long term affects on the soil health, but it is a very good question to ask. The main problems we've had in our woods has been as a result of lack of maintenance of historic drainage ditches & bunds.... this has lead to soil washing out/ amplified with this seasons heavy rains. Coupling the heavy rainfall with the repetitive strong winds has resulted in numerous wind blown trees.... about a dozen for us so far, including some pretty big ones. The ditch work we've carried out so far has already made a positive difference to the soil waterlogging (quite a big task). I have no doubt it will be of benefit to the woodland in the long term. Cheers, steve
  4. I've been on an open day/ course with a reputable stove company and was told any wood is fine to burn ....BUT ONLY if it's properly seasoned. Also apparently it's good to leave Oak outside without a cover so that the rain can wash out the tannins; oak needs a 4 to 5 year seasoning cycle (in our area). cheers, steve

  8. No, I've not tried holding a chainsaw at head height and contacted the 'kickback zone' with the rear section of the tree as demonstrated at 4mins 59secs. And you sir, are you smitten with this technique?
  9. He also said "much lower down"
  10. take note of the "BUT" in the comment above folks... big difference
  11. Cheers mate I was going to chomp it up for firewood but glad I've resisted as it seems it may be okay for internal construction. *Nearly as strong as Douglas-Fir Larch and resistant to splitting from nailing & screwing* Hem-Fir
  12. Good shout that man! Thankyou Luftwaffe ....Having a good read about it now to try & find out about it's qualities for use in construction.
  13. The smooth bark isn't quite as smooth at the base of the tree....
  14. Silky Natanoko at the base....
  15. Relentless Rain + Strong Winds =
  16. I did wonder about Western Hemlock but the bark looks quite smooth. Got some bark photos now. It's 80dp (Dunlop Puroforts) in length....
  17. you kidding?? straight felling at more risk? .....probably best not to pick up on methods from those guys!
  18. Flower bobbles, purple/ lilac colour tinge (not obvious in photo)....
  19. Had a sizeable fir go down in the recent winds and wondering if it'll be any good for making into trusses & battens for our barn roof? The flower bobbles have a purple/lilac colour tinge to them. Sorry, no bark photos at the moment:
  20. - should think himself lucky not to have been seriously injured so far.
