  1. It may have spalted.... see the front of this guitar as an example: http://uberaxe.com/resources/8.JPG If it's left to spalt too long then you may find parts of the wood are much softer.... so, eg, may not be so suitable for a kitchen worktop.... but may be okay for kitchen doors. Google "spalted ash" and look at the images for more examples. cheers, Steve
  2. Does anyone make a bigger version of the Portek Logmaster?.... something that will handle much bigger logs.... up to about 18" diameter. I'm wanting to make lots of end grain blocks out of oak, for our barn floor; so I'm looking to get them fairly accurate. I've got an Alaskan vertical mini mill thing.... maybe could modify something for that? (for accurate cross cutting). Cheers, Steve
  3. Ignore my last comment - I upgraded to iOS 9.2 and it seems to be working okay now. cheers, steve
  4. I'm not sure if this is a glitch on my iPad or Arbtalk?.... I'm finding pages aren't always loading fully & I have to refresh the page, then it will load. It's happening regularly on Arbtalk but I haven't noticed it on other websites. Mind you, I don't spend so much time on other websites! Haha! Just wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue? cheers, steve
  5. You need help.
  6. SRV & Double Trouble, Radiohead, Doves, Beatles, etc.... and DEFINITELY NOT Frozen!!
  7. Probably a good plan for the whole of the U.K to do the same, considering the regular strong winds we're getting.

    Aspen cans

Are used 5ltr plastic Aspen cans safe to use for storing diesel, or are they likely to degrade after time? cheers, steve
  9. HAHA!! YES!
  10. Yeah, that's a good point on how it's been accelerated artificially by our own actions.... so it appears we can't stop it spreading, that's nigh on impossible.... ....but realistically' if we can't do anything about it then what's the point in even trying to do something about something we know will have zero/ or close to zero effect?! (if that makes sense). I don't see field trials radically speeding up the finding of chalara tolerant trees vs trees found in the wild under more natural/ real conditions. Overall, it seems like a complete waste of time and money.... but great opportunity for organisations to cash in!! *ching, ching* cheers, steve
  11. Forum rules: Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists - Forum Rules Matelot, check out 2 and 15. cheers, steve
  12. Surely there must be a huge amount of native ash that is continually regenerating itself here.... it's not as though every UK ash tree was uprooted and replanted with Chalara intolerant trees. I see that map of the UK with Chalara spreading across the country and think it's a great method for scaring the general public into helping out, financially. cheers, steve
  13. What's your thoughts on The Woodland Trust #ashdieback campaign?.... I think it's a great opportunity for a money spinner: Paint by Pictures Forest And they are testing for resistant strains..... well, I reckon mother nature will do a better job at that than any oober expensive 'field trial'. I say sit back, let the trees die that will die and restock from the ones that don't. Its not as though Ash trees don't grow fast. hmmmm, #ashHumbug
  14. Someone local here (in Pembrokeshire) recently took a load of pallets, clothing, bedding, etc to Calais.... quite an eye opener reading his account of how tough the conditions are. There's also an element of danger due to the mafia (they sell bedding, etc to newcomers at extortionate prices). ..... there are ordinary families there, with children, in grim conditions.... and it's winter (thankfully mild at the moment). cheers, Steve

    Silly saw

Not yet.... had mine 3 years. It's not as sharp and crisp, obviously.... but still cuts very well. ....it felt much blunter after father in law used it to cut on the push.... despite my repeated instructions. Can't teach an old dog new tricks eh! I'm never lending my silky to anyone ever again! gah!!
  16. Try putting ecover in the compartment.... it's like a foam party, great fun!
  17. Then he'll have to keep buying new trousers until she complains there's no money left for new shoes!

    Silly saw

This is fast turning into a Silky vs Chainsaw thread..... My desert island saw would have to be the silky; purely because of the lack of a petrol station.... and solar panels!
  19. oooooh.... this thread is giving me chainsaw millers twitch!!
  20. I thought the chain might stay sharper for longer, maybe?... less crud to dull the chain.
  21. Is it best to remove any spongey sapwood before chainsaw milling? Should be easy enough to do with a drawknife and sharp spade.
  22. We have quite a few big fallen oaks in our woods and big chunky branches and this thread answers some questions I had. Cheers!
  23. Damned if you do use the washing machine, damned if you don't..... that's equal rights for ya!

    Silly saw

    Stihl vs Silky no contest!
  25. It's all a con..... including Children In Need.... because it's probably the poorest in society that contribute the biggest percentage to the cause.... causes that the Government should be providing for via childrens services, etc. The same goes for food banks. (I'm not saying we shouldn't be supporting children that need). cheers, steve
