  1. Wow! You have had a fair bit over your way Craig. I can't believe we've missed most of it in Blaenau.
  2. Where abouts are you Craig? Sounds worse where you are than up here in Blaenau.
  3. Has been raining all day but turned to snow a while ago. Really heavy for a while, flakes larger than a £2 coin and falling thickly. It's eased now but not before it dried everywhere up and started to settle.
  4. I switched from a prussik to a blake's whilst still on my training. Stuck with that for years and have recently switched to a Hitchhiker. Love it.
  5. Had the same problem with the red wine left out "for the elves" in our house.
  6. If he gets to mendiplogs first, they'll be even blunter when he's finished with them.
  7. My kids already know! But they've never admitted it and still insist on the ritual of leaving something out for Santa.
  8. My wife and the kids have decided that we need to leave a glass of red and a mince pie for the elves too.
  9. My kids generally leave a mince pie and a nice single malt for Santa, and a carrot for the reindeer.
  10. Sounds sensible to me. Maybe word it slightly differently though so that it is clear that the allowance is high enough that it will cover the cost of climbing kit, so that there are no worries by prospective applicants that they will end up bearing the brunt of the cost. Maybe something along the lines of "We are aware that every climber has their prefered system and as such rather than providing a pre-selected kit, we give a generous allowance for climbing kit so that the successful applicant can select their own personal kit."
  11. It really annoys me when people moan that they can't afford to eat good food because it's much cheaper to eat crap. And then they back this up by quoting 2 for 1 offers and the price of frozen pizzas and such like. We had a really nice, nutricious curry last week, cooked from fresh ingredients. We worked out it cost £5 in ingredients and it fed 3 adults for 2 evenings meals and we still had a portion left over to freeze for the future. There is no way you could feed the same people as much, for that sort of money buying all this supposedly cheap, junk food.
  12. I used to use a Blake's and found it much better than a prussik. I never had any problems with it slipping, in fact if anything it gradually got tighter and had a bit of a tendency to bind. I generally had to loosen it every now and then. I test weight my system before I head up the tree, if it's working properly at that stage I'm happy to head up.
  13. Ooops. What happened? If it happened in normal use have you tried a warranty claim if it's only 3 months old? Or did you squish it?
  14. Maybe his business is aimed at landscaping, hedgetrimming and such like, (he hasn't detailed his area of operations). Someone has approached him regarding some tree works, and as a new start up, rather than turning work away, he just wants to sub contract the work out, so that he can satisfy the customer. I can't see anything wrong with that in principle.
  15. I really like the idea of the Easy Lift Harness. Unfortunately though most of my hedges are above eye level, and so I can't see the top to get a good enough quality cut from the ground. So for me the fact that it can't be used from on steps makes it a real no no. It's a shame because it's cutting the top with a long reach cutter that it would be the most benefit.
  16. I've wondered that too. Does it have van limits as a van derived car or car limits? If it's van limits there are going to be loads of people coming unstuck with several similar models being sold as cars by several manufacturers.
  17. Ooops missed a page of posts there. Was replying to the post on the previous page.
  18. Nope. 2800kg renault traffic VAN is 50 on single carriageway A roads, 60 Dual and 70 motorway. Any non-car based van. Even some smaller vans come under this now as they aren't car based anymore. But if it is a renault traffic camper van then same limits as a car. Madness! Since the camper could quite easily weigh more than an unladen van. Personally I think campers should have the same limits as vans. Whether that means vans should go up or campers down is a different discussion but there is absolutely no sense in them being different.
  19. Funny you should say that, I was running a Jonsered 630 when I was working on clear fell, for both felling and snedding. Amazingly good solid saw, it's a bit unreliable now but then it's about 19 year old.
  20. chrisj

    Bottled it!

Is it just me or does it seem a bit weird that the boss was so pushy to get him to go home, that there was no time for a picture? Saying if you're not going to do it, you might as well go home then, is one thing. But to be wanting him off site so quick? Makes me wonder if he knew it was iffy and didn't want him there as a witness. Otherwise surely he would have no problem with him being around, to show him how he was wrong and it was ok.
  21. Ha Ha! Yes it was pretty early in my working days. Fittest I've ever been. I've been working in landscaping and garden maintenance for years though, which is a bit easier on the body. Did my CS38 and 39 a few years ago and do smaller tree works though so I'm back to trees again.
  22. The big 40 just gone mate.
  23. Wow wages seem to be better today. When I was on clearfell (probably 19 years ago now, to be fair) I was on 75p per tree felled and snedded, providing all fuel and equipment too.
  24. I like cooking and baking, expecially at Christmas. I make all our mince pies and my wife is barred from the kitchen on Christmas day.
  25. The house felt like it was shaking with the wind last night. Still really windy, icy cold and pouring with rain here. Definitely a day to stay by the log burner.
