  1. How about the fig 8 system that they came up with when developing the rope wrench? I can't remeber the name of it. Where you pull a bight of rope through the fig 8 above your prussick and clip a krab through it with a length of rope to your harness. Once it's on you can operate your prussick as normal and if it adds enough friction to work srt, it may well help enough for 2 on ddrt.
  2. I can never understand people being so bothered about having their birthday off. The day after makes sense if they've been out celebrating that night. But having your birthday off and having to work next day, I really don't understand.
  3. I have the Wolfe pole with loppers and saw. They do a pole that extends to 5m too. They've lasted me well for gardening clients. I don't use them as much as those of you that are full time tree workers though so don't know how they would stand up to heavy use.
  4. Hitchhiker. It works great both SRT and DDrt. So pleased I got mine.
  5. Ah, that makes sense TGB. I do still wonder how long until it all gets gummed up and stops working. If it works, it's an interesting gadget. It just seems like a solution to a problem that I've never found. Getting the honey off the hive isn't hard, and I actually enjoy the job of extracting the honey. Plus I value the wax that I get from the cappings, so I'd lose out on that with this system.
  6. The other thing is how long before the bees gum it all up with propolis and stop it working? When that happens can you put it in an extractor and spin the honey out, or are you stuffed? Because lets face it some bees love sticking things up with propolis.
  7. I'm not sure I get the value of it either. You've still got to go through the hive for swarm control, disease management etc. How are you going to know if the honey is ripe and the comb capped with out going into the hive? If you don't check you could be extracting unripe nectar, so you'd have to open the hive to see if it's ready. And by the time you've done that you might just as well pop a clearer board on and do it the conventional way. Once the bees have capped the comb they will think it's full. So if you drain it off they may not fill it again unless you go in and break the cappings. You'd have to drain it off at night too, not in the middle of a sunny day like they do in the vid. With a open jar with honey running into it the bees would find it in no time. A stack of honey supers in a room with an open window is found smartish let alone at the hive. (I actually know someone that dropped some honey jars which smashed over the carpet. He left the window open and went out for the weekend, and by the time he came back the bees had found it and cleaned it all up. The carpet wasn't even sticky.)
  8. I take it they mean they'll PAY £800 for someone to clear it all????:lol:
  9. According to the EA site you need a waste carriers license, but since it is for green waste it is the lower tier one which is free and takes about 2 mins to sort on-line. https://www.gov.uk/waste-carrier-or-broker-registration
  10. I quite agree. But it's interesting to know that these techniques are available. We use it more for locating lost mountaineers, but in areas where Mountain Rescue teams operate the police often use us for missing person searches in lower lying areas, including local towns and villages, so this technology can be useful to find non-mountaineers too.
  11. Good to hear that others on here are aware that it's an urban myth about the difference between 112 and 999. The number of times I've pointed this out in other places and people were adamant that 112 was better because someone on youtube said so, or because their 1st aid trainer saw it on youtube and presented it as fact. Depending where you are it is possible to get a very accurate location on you, but not just from your 999 call. Mountain Rescue teams use a system called SARLOC. So if you have a smart phone, they send something to your phone and when you click on it, it reads reads you position from the web browser and transmits your location to their computer. So if you are lucky enough to be working in an area covered by one of these teams, or are into mountaineering, it can be a life saver. Here's a write up about it. SARLOC© ? 12. I use Firefox. I searched using Lawnmower repairs Exmouth and you were 3/4 of the way down the first page. Tried again using Garden Machinery Exmouth and you were the 1st none paid for listing.
  13. Cut toilet roll middles into rings of what ever thickness you desire. Then melt down any bits of old candles you may have knocking around. (We have friends donate these to us as well). Then mix in loads of sawdust / wood shavings (whatever you want to call it. The pile of stuff that builds up under where you've been using the chainsaw). You want just enough wax in it to bind it when it sets. Then pack this into the toilet roll middle rings. Voila home made firelighters using waste items. You can do similar using yoghurt pots with a stick in the middle as a mould to make garden candles / torches. You can make bigger ones with bigger moulds and use them as logs to chuck on the BBQ when you're camping but so far I've found the wax tends to run everywhere once they've been burning for a while so not great if the mess in your BBQ will bother you. I have wondered about making them in old biscuit tins and burning them in the tin as a sort of portable campfire, but I haven't tried that yet.

    pork pie ??

They probably add colouring to the shop bought ones, particularly the cheap mass produced ones.
  15. As far as I know you have to get it from the US as there isn't a UK supplier. Don't worry though it's a good company and I found it was a very straight forward transaction.
  16. OK. This is my outdoor pursuits web-site. Chris Jackson Coaching Home Page
  17. I don't have a web-site for this work, as I have plenty of work without. I do have a web-site for my part-time outdoor pursuits business. Is it ok to post that up for critique or is that too much off track?
  18. Ah that makes sense.
  19. Penderyn is welsh made in Brecon. Not peaty at all, very smooth.
  20. I've got the Echo CS550 which I'm well pleased with it, but I think it would be a bit overkill for what you need. I reckon the 420 that you are looking at would probably do the job quite nicely for what you want.
  21. MaCallan is a lovely whisky.
  22. The purists will burn me at the stake but my favourite is Penderyn made in Wales. Of the Scottish ones my preference is for the Speyside malts rather than the Islay malts (faaar to peaty for me).
  23. Absolutely pouring with rain here now and snow all gone (in town anyway, I'm sure there will still be some snow on the mountains).
