  1. i have a metal chassis set into the concrete and the motor is fitted to that separate from the head rig frame.
  2. Heres a quick picture of my guilliet. I built some metal frames instead of blocks to support the head rig because it will simplify the pit (essentially a rectangular hole in the floor 4' x 5') if you are handy with steel
  3. all you would need is the distances for the head rig mounting points or where they fix to concrete. build good heavy foundations to meet these points and leave plenty room in your pit for changing your band (12'' min). once you have fitted your head rig place a band over your pulleys and line your benches to the blade. done. if you are going to cut enormously heavy logs put extra rollers or stiffen up the bench for a good straight cut
  4. ouch! i got hit by something nasty while on the trumpton thread. i always find a system restore solves the problem
  5. it would depend on the layout of the bench. i have one on a stenner bench and i think it could handle a 3' log and the widest planking width would be around 2'
  6. a 6290 and my first proper massey a 6170 a few years back being pulled out of a sticky spot looking at that photo again Dave is standing at funny angle
  7. bargain! dyna6 or vt? hours? what is the intended use? also if its a 50k at 1600 rpm this means it will do 60k at 2200 rpm!
  8. how much did you get her for?? these big 64 series masseys are a huge bang for the buck and are really tough and reliable
  9. i agree it looks poor quality and i cannot see anything pictured thats close to 6'. i thought it could be used for vertical load bearing pillars if the grain was dense enough, how accessible is the site?
  10. i would be interested in the lot
  11. Timber kit price £36975 + vat exterior comes in 2.4x3m panels clad in 26mm larch. interior is lined with 25mm douglas fir windows are pine similar spec to nordan This is a full timber house without services. The roof consists of 14 cassettes and is offered ready for slate or profile sheeting. The panel size is optimised for transportation. This is a theoretical price because its not engineered so i have included £5k for structural engineering (may need minor adjustments if that). The biggest cost is the roof coming in at £12000 we could probably cut a good few thousand here because i have worked it to a much larger build (7.3 m instead of 5.7m to be extra safe). in terms of cost what we want is a run of four or five of the same building and we could be looking at around £30000 per kit
  12. give your ideal size for a kit and i will attempt to put some figures to it because this is becoming a popular lunch time discussion, can you build a top end house for less?
  13. The crown on the pulleys hold the blade in position with a good amount of tension because the middle of your band will centre itself on the highest point of the pulley, the more tension you have the less the band will be pushed back until you find the correct tension where the band will not move when cutting. You can put more tension on a wider saw meaning it can take more pushing force this means a wider band can cut wood faster with less deviation. A double cut works larger saws at higher tensions so this theory is worked from both sides and the band runs in the middle of the pulley. My Guilliet recommends 175kg per cm for saws so i like to run with 2300kg this is a slow cutting saw but cuts very well so well that it dosent need the guides when cutting with sharp saws, it is let down by the stenner rackbench that is easily bent when overloaded hence my interest in carriage mills.
  14. great find! that mill looks really good fun, have not seen a mill with 55 inch pulleys but only takes a 5 inch saw normally its 7 inch unless its just running with smaller saws. i priced a gillet carriage/stenner 54 back in july. i think its located in Belgium and i was tempted by the price but it was not the ideal mill for me so considering the installation cost we decided to give her a miss. 15. your going to build a lumberpro! Stock List | H. Armstrong Limited - Sawmill Machinery Engineers Solutions Seach from what i can see carriages are difficult to find in reasonable condition, this is by far the cheapest i can find online, there is a working 54 with a 3 knee carriage but its 25k and incomplete and then you are into bigger stuff like vq137 and vq150's could you give a hint as to what you are building?
  16. also when welding with stainless rods watch the fumes are carcinogenic
  17. about 8 years ago got a bosch 115 grinder for £30 new from our local tool store, they received a pallet load from bosch to win back sales. to be honest it was under powered so got a 125 1100w bosch thats done very well
  18. and some more photos to follow
  19. a set of four made this time last year. these have a gentle dish to them and i will start to band them tomorrow
  20. eventually got her banded sorry its taken two years to get some photos up
  21. have a p38 4.0 se a very good capable truck, expect £40 every day on petrol and its good to allow the same again for repairs
  22. i dont have much experience with smaller forestry equipment, the smallest i went was a holder a55 and tractors like ford 4000 and massey 135 etc. you could look at a mid sized farm telihandler something like this http://implements.frasersauctionroom.co.uk/uploads/lot_asset/asset/32895/lightbox_1108.JPG i think that one made 6k (i thought 10-12)and sold. i have worked with a small estate that has a john deere 3200 with a log grab and its performance is excellent. it has very good ground clearance, really strong steering and a short wheel base gives a really good platform to work in the woods. i replaced our county 1164 with a manitou 741 for hardwood extraction because it would run rings round pretty much anything all day and then drive home! we would get a good days work done with the holder but you would get four times the work done with the telihandler
  23. very true i use a 6170 massey where you could use a 390 because you get more height this gives better visibility and better visibility gives better control also easier to control, you also get a comfy cab and usually better hydraulics and user friendly controls also you get a heavier tractor that will handle better towing trailers and working implements also small large tractors are less sought after by smallholders making them much cheaper than large small tractors (based on their capability) i would recommend 6270, 6280 massey and onwards, they have strong economical engines and tough electric gearboxes 6600, 6610, 6810 etc. john deere because good hydraulic gearboxes but not 20 series because they have poor (electric) gear boxes i would not recommend new holland tm series, there are tons of new ones running around but only until the warranty runs out then they get launched anything Renault, claas (renault in disguise), jcb, but what was disturbing about the 5445?
  24. circular, band or chainsaw?
  25. scm is invincible! well done mate:thumbup1:
