  1. Seven Sisters chestnut, Penshurst. Ended up here on a random walk, didn't know it was there. The largest living tree (by volume?) in the UK I believe, a seven stemmed sweet chestnut.
  2. Bit late it seems, but I needed a homeowner saw about 10 years ago, and stumbled across a Spear & Jackson(!) chainsaw on eBay for £75 or so. Obviously it's cheap and Chinese, but it's served me well those ten years, cutting probably 3 or 4 M3 of logs on average per year. I sharpen the chain when it needs it and empty it of fuel (idle away the dregs) before putting away, and not had to replace any parts of it, touch wood.
  3. Just for comparison, here are photos (from today) of an alder and a sweet chestnut I planted at a similar time to the eucs. Or possibly in early 2018.
  4. And the same trees today! Nitens then neglecta. While that's the biggest neglecta (probably 12 foot tall on looking at it again), the others aren't too far behind. Nitens are growing a lot slower, though they may have been hit harder by the frost. They're supposed to be hardier than neglecta if I remember right!
  5. These ones are the same plants after frost nip, in April 2018. Neglecta then nitens this time.
  6. Hunted out a few pics. First one is Eucalyptus nitens, planted out end of June 2017. Second is Eucalyptus neglecta, planted out at the same time.
  7. Polytunnel? My logs dry over spring / summer in a polytunnel, though they still get a bit soggy at this time of year when the wind drops and the air is damp. (Not much sun on the tunnel at this time of year either). A day or so in the house / by the fire and they should be OK again.
  8. I'll find photos, but I'm not at home at the moment.
  9. I did a bit of euc research, and in 2017 I planted E. nitens and E. neglecta. The growth rate is phenomenal, especially on the nitens. I planted them out at about 6" tall (too soon really) and now they're at least 8 or 10 foot tall. I haven't fertilised them or anything, just whacked them into grassy soil with a weed membrane on top. One thing to note: they're supposed to be cold hardy, but this only applies to mature trees. I didn't protect my seedlings at all and they were badly knocked back by frosts. A few died, particularly the neglecta.
  10. Your photos aren't very clear or close up, but aren't they just losing their leaves for Autumn? My robinia all have by now.
  11. The stein arborist trolley seems popular. Not cheap though, and I'm not sure if it comes with a towball attachment as standard, just human towing handles?
  12. Thanks a lot Ernie, that's a really useful website. Good to know specific brands, and how long a good frame marquee will last. Cheers.
  13. I prefer this forum to arbtalk on Facebook, a much nicer format and generally more easy going posters. And I'm still under 40!
  14. Good point, I can cope with using a hacksaw on it!
  15. Yes, I did think about a greenhouse, cheers. Trouble is I've yet to find one with a door wide enough to get a tractor into! Might just see what comes up locally and affordably...
  16. Thanks all, some options to think about. EUR500 for that carport doesn't seem bad, though I imagine it would need to be assembled. I have no access to timber to mill, unfortunately. Don't really have the time (or skill!) to build something myself, I fear. And I think a polytunnel might be different to a marquee for planning. Counts as a temporary structure? No one's complained yet anyway! I'd struggle to get a lorry body or container into the paddock, and think my neighbours would be more likely to complain - my polytunnel is quite discreet... But a solid walled structure would last longer and probably be more useful. I always need more outbuildings! Hmm.
  17. I like the look, but it would need walls, and probably planning permission, so is likely to be difficult... Having said that, what sort of cost might something like your photo be?
  18. Only if you go for the full service package. Don't think I can afford it!
  19. Or this seems to be heftier: 3.3x4.8m Carport Tent / Portable Garage, PVC 550 g/m², dark green with statics (ground: soil) - House of Tents WWW.HOUSEOFTENTS.CO.UK 3.3x4.8m Carport Tent / Portable Garage, PVC 550 g/m², dark green - Portable garage with statics: robust, stable...
  20. That does look a bit more beefy, but at a cost! Yes, hence my question! I've seen one on YouTube standing under a foot of snow, but can't find the exact model and doubt it's the same. Other similar ones to this say "not to be put up all year round, no responsibility taken for damage due to weather", so not inspiring confidence! I see Machine Mart do a Clarke garage tent, that might last better. Clarke CIG81015 Garage / Workshop - Green (4.5 x 3 x 2.4m) - Machine Mart - Machine Mart WWW.MACHINEMART.CO.UK
  21. Hi all Thinking about getting one of the above, e.g. 10x20 CAR SHELTER PORTABLE GARAGE AWNING GAZEBO CARPORT CANOPY MARQUE TENT NEW WWW.EBAY.CO.UK 10x20 Shelterlogic Car Peak style Shelter. The shelter is secured in position with solid stabilizers and the cover... I'd like to store a tractor and attachments and probably other bits and pieces in it, all year round, in a damp and sometimes windy paddock. I already have a polytunnel, but it's full of logs, and it tends to gather condensation, which I don't want. Has anyone tried a temporary garage, and are they any good? Can you recommend a good value for money one (not necessarily cheap but needs to be strong and last) and perhaps a good place to buy from? Anything permanent would be more trouble than it's worth I think as it's in an AONB, and access is narrow and difficult. Budget would probably stretch to the above example if it's good enough, but less would of course be better! Thank you.
  22. I hope it also turned up a few more "interesting" results!
  23. What's the purpose of all these questions? Market research or boosting your website SEO? Not an issue as such, just curious...
  24. A few thoughts on this (not mine, but some worked examples relating to flight CO2 emissions) here: How many trees do I need to plant to offset the carbon dioxide released in a flight? - Quora WWW.QUORA.COM
