  1. Been getting some logs in ready to start cutting next week. Got some nice oak from our own woods but it was a bit awkward to get to then some oversized stuff for splitting down which I just got on one load.
  2. It's bad enough charging businesses to be on the list who can, and I expect will, leave but it's basically being forced on self suppliers. The surveys not much use but at least you can make your own suggestions at the end. Edit: My suggestion to them: I would scrap the tonnage fee as you won't get the income expected from it. Currently BSL registered businesses will sell all their wood as BSL registered even though only a very small percentage of customers require it. If a fee was charged per ton businesses will only sell the bare minimum as BSL registered, not to mention issues with tons and cubic meters. If a fee must be charged (which I don't think it should for a scheme which is compulsory for self suppliers) then it should be a standard membership fee for all traders of no more than £100 to try minimise people leaving and keep things simple.
  3. Sorry I didn't explain properly. If I wanted to buy a firewood processor chain for ours I have to select a chainsaw that I think would use a 24 inch bar to find the chains. It would be easier if I could skip the brand and chainsaw boxes and go straight to bars even if they were all listed and you had to scroll through. It's not the end of the world of course and I expect processors are a tiny percentage of your sales anyway. Alternatively you could start compiling a list of processors if you've got nothing better to do.
  4. With the chain selector would it be possible to only select the bar for the chain? I was looking for processor chains and I have to put in a similar chainsaw to get to the bar first. There is an impressive selection of chainsaws though, I bet that took some research.
  5. Yeah nice to see they got a good deal and job done from posting here. It's surprising how many people are around who can do a job when you post.

    Conveyors

We use a replacement tajfun conveyor from a firewood processor to move wood chip. It's well built and does the job but it was expensive.
  7. Try and get them from the cheapest dealer but don't mind paying a bit extra if it's a local business. The plus side of going to the same dealer is you can usually negotiate a bit off.

    Rio Olympics

The Olympics is about the only time I watch sport (without an engine). Shame it's a different time zone - the highlights of the opening ceremony looked amazing as always and I would've liked to watch live. I'll probably watch a few of the events, what bits I've caught so far seem good, especially that bike course. Personally I like to see professionals competing alongside amateurs, it should be the best athletes in the world regardless of their background and the 'amateurs' have normally been training full time anyway. I hope Britain gets a few medals but I can't see us getting close to a home games tally.
  9. Fair point. Good for customers though I suppose. It's also hard to compete with with people who get their wood for free but it's all part of the fun of the business.
  10. I think most of the people on here will have worked out their costings and know what they need to charge. I've got a page of costings with that list and a lot more and while our prices won't make us rich we make a living and we and our customers are happy with the price and product which is the main thing.
  11. That's a good price. We've actually gone the other way but hopefully if the price is lower in other areas that will limit future rises a bit. I don't mind a bit of competition (we wouldn't be too happy if we had no choice where to buy cordwood from) but it is irritating when a price rise instantly makes you seem overpriced although our customers are pretty loyal because we have the quality of logs. We do have to be very careful with expense, especially production speed but we're lucky that we have a farm to hire tractors /loaders from and we're selling 800-1000 tons on the log side so things like the processor aren't costing much per load.
  12. I wondered why we were bankrupt... Being serious though obviously there is a small amount of profit, there's certainly enough others around here charging around that amo. Hardwood is around £58 a ton here and that gets you about 1.8cube maybe it's more expensive with you? Edit: no one in this area wants softwood so this is the first year experimenting with it.
  13. Equivalent of about 67 for hard and 56 for soft. Both are dried and we're £5 up on last year.
  14. 60cm could be an issue for a lot of machines, ours will do 19inch diameter but max length is 50.
  15. I had a similar problem when some chains were too long. I got some some 84 link Husqvarna chains made up and they were too slack. Turns out they were 85 link because of the tie used to join them.
  16. I can't see it happening but the TV show full metal jousting proved it can work.
  17. We do exactly that.Free delivery within 20 miles then more, usually £10/20, after that up to about 40 miles. We just have 5% included in both prices but you could be right in that the delivery charge should technically have 20% on it. I can't help much but it's an interesting question, might be worth looking what larger companies like certainly wood do.
  18. Just wondering if there's anyone who would be interesting in buying firewood to sell on or get a discount on a large quantity. We're quieter on the orders in the summer so if anyone wants unseasoned (actually the trees have been felled 3+ months ago) hardwood we have plenty available to collect. Probably looking at £60 a cube.
  19. It's a shame we live in a world where these things happen, condolences to everyone in. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for these events and saying banning religion is not going to help we shouldn't try and force our own beliefs whether we are Muslim, Atheist, Christian or anything on others but try and work together to sort things out.
  20. If you're looking for a really tidy job it might be worth finding someone with a front mounted topper, they're not as common but you won't get the tyres flattening 2 lines first.
  21. Unfortunately doing the sums I can't see you'll make anything at that price. I'd guess the trailer is 8x4x2 so about £120 a load. If it's only 18inch deep it will still be around £90 (getting 40 loads) and you've still got to pay for your time loading, unloading and delivering as well as other costs. Bare in mind that's just done in my head with guessed figures so I could be wrong but margins are very tight on firewood and there's a lot of people doing it. Best of luck though, it is still possible to make money.
  22. That's a reasonably good price to buy for (although I'm sure I could beat it ) so the key question is how many cube are you putting in your trailer? You're going to have handling costs and it also depends if you want to dry it in terms of expenses.
  23. Surely if you enjoy your work it's the same as someone having the occasional holiday, as long as you're happy do what you want.
  24. I would be careful putting bigger shear bolts in. We did it with our chipper after snapping a few and the pto stub on the tractor snapped instead. We fixed the problem by adjusting the stress control in the end.
  25. Yes, that does make a difference compared to 1 or the ones you hold manually, especially near the end of a log. Also if you look around 1:20 you can see the flaps that stop the log from falling too soon. There's a manual release for them as well in case the logs under pressure because of them.
