  1. Trees are usually left because they provide shelter for animals or its not worth the time and effort of digging the roots out and of course it's nice to see big old trees in a field. As a tractor driver I hate trees in fields, I would rather they were in hedgerows but as a livestock farmer I like to see them, especially on rough grazing land that isn't ploughed or used for silage. My bigger worry is where the next generation of these trees is. I would be interested to know if that ploughing was just to reseed grass as it seems like a lot of effort. The only other thing I can think of is a cover crop for pheasants.
  2. Alternatively you might be lucky and near to Rob D in the topic below this.
  3. Depends on the scale you're looking at. We use a Ryetec 40 ton to split down the big stuff and that will take up to 4ft diameter. The downside is it costs around 15K but you can probably halve that if you don't want it trailed or any extras. There's a few companies but we went with ryetec. They'll also build smaller machines for you. Only picture I have of ours;

I like mine, it's a good saw, if a bit heavy. I run mine on a 20inch bar and it's mostly used for blocking oversized logs that don't fit through the firewood processor. I went for it over a 372 because the vibrations are less.

Sorry, I missed that. That's exactly what I was thinking of.

Fair point, it's not much effort. I only mention it as I worry sometimes when I put a few pictures in a post. Just a thought, could you put a download button in that puts the entire inbox into a text file that you can save on your pc?

Do private messages add up to much storage compared to the 10 years of photos here? That must be a huge amount. I really appreciate that we're allowed to upload photos here by the way.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that a standard hilux is quite a bit smaller because we've had a couple of people who pick up wood with one but add 6 inches to the sides and you should be OK and you can always heap a fair bit more in. We've got an Isuzu tipper now with slightly higher than standard Sides and a fitted tarpaulin so we can really heap it without worrying.

Yes the one in the picture we used to fill with 1.8. We've actually got one slightly bigger now but do the same size loads for simplicity. Changing the pictures is on my list but I want to clean it up before I put a photo up.

Thanks, I have emailed them, hopefully they get back to me tomorrow. I'll be sure to back things up first to avoid any disasters.

I thought so but when I log in I only get a stripped down version of wordpress (presumably because I'm not the admin). I have the latest version of wordpress on my pc but I can't edit the website with it.

Thanks. I've just realised that I can only edit text and add pictures without going back to the original designers who host it so I'm a bit more limited than I thought.

As I'm bored out of my mind after an operation on my wrist I've been trying to improve our website. It was originally set up by someone else so I'm still learning my way around but any feedback especially on obvious mistakes is welcome. Be gentle. 14. Thanks, the drying has really helped sales. We've got a lot of different organisations looking at the trees so with the variety we planted and the monitoring that's already been done we'll hopefully get some information on trying to prevent the die back. Feel free to stop by again.
  15. Nice video. On a side note did anyone get a picture of the chainsaw at the APF last time that had been cut in half.?
  16. I would go with your surname then a description as it's a good balance between professional and personal. For example we started of with my dad using his name selling firewood alongside the farm then we started a separate business called Hormann's Firewood which meant our older customers know who we are. Also it helps in the bank when people make cheques out to your name for the business account.
  17. The volume should increase when chipped. With normal wood 1ton makes 3 to 4 cube but I wouldn't like to guess with slabwood. The only issue I can see is that you'll have a lower quality chip because you have a higher percentage of bark, although your picture does look like tidy stuff.
  18. We tend to cut about a month in advance of delivery. We have a 160 boxes that we just fill as they empty, except when we fall behind towards the end of winter. We've just caught back up now. We've got about 900 tons of wood ready to cut, now we just need to sell some more firewood so we can afford to buy more unprocessed in for next winter.
  19. Have you considered getting a second hand flail topper to go behind a quad bike (assuming you have access to a Quad)?
  20. We're still processing here, it is slowing down though. We're buying in a lot of wood at the moment ready for next year but it's up to £58 a ton so we're going to have to put prices up which will mean a few less orders for a bit until they've phoned around and realised everyone's gone up.
  21. Haha, he might not win against the kestrel.
  22. I wouldn't want too many long days but there's nothing wrong with enjoying work if it's your hobby as well, some people go out drinking or watch TV and some enjoy a couple of hours more at work. I get people telling me I need to come out more and stop working but I get bored sitting in a pub or by the beach so I do what makes me happier. To a point of course.
  23. Old asbestos is very brittle but as long as you don't drop anything big on it you're no more at risk of breathing in dust than living in it.
  24. Not quite the same but I had some small birds, starlings maybe but I never saw the mother properly, nest on top of the wall about 3ft from where the logs came out the conveyor and hit it i watched them grow for a few weeks, even gave them a worm and watched as they grew feathers. Eventually they started to try and fly and that was the morning my cat killed the lot. I wasn't happy with the cat... Anyway my theories always been that birds wouldn't nest there if they didn't like it,cats aside.
