  1. yes all in par board form from 5"-10" wide. all 23mm thick and 3-4m long. not sure what sort of price yet as i can't find anyone selling any to get a rough guide from.
  2. hi all, i'm getting my hands on some birdseye maple and i just wondered if anyone is interested in some for any projects. i should have about 36ft3 of varying widths 5-10" all planed to 23mm. if anyone is interested please let me know.
  3. most people don't realise that most oranges (the skin at least) are green anyway so they do indeed look like oranges. the osage part of the name is supposed to come from the native american tribe who used them for shooting arrows as it's the most highly prized wood for bows. the wood is gorgeous. Osage Orange | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) where is this tree then?
  4. often called a hedge apple or horse apple too. Maclura pomifera didn't know it grew in this country.
  5. i know how to do it beau but i just wanted to upgrade to a nice wide stone if i could, i'd also like to do kitchen knives and a 3-4" wide stone would be excellent for that.
  6. it's only a couple of inches off the end so they should not be moaning about that. if it was cut in half i could understand it but you are simply accessing the state of the wood and it's colour. by the sounds of it this log should be ok so i think it's worth the risk.
  7. i have considered a CBN wheel but i was hoping to get something wider than 40mm for my plane irons which are up to 3" wide and i have skews wider than 40mm too. i'f i can get myself a good industrial single phase gadget then i'm going to look in to making my own with that huge surface grinding wheel i bought.
  8. i'm going to say lime then.
  9. if the yew is nice and orange then i would go for one of the maples as it contrasts excellently.
  10. i have a welding friend who should be able to knock that up or any other legs you'd like. give me a bell if you want it done.
  11. james, give me a close up of the wood and i may be able to help.
  12. why don't you put this on the side of your van:lol::lol: .
  13. i was 4 when this struck and still have images of trees laying all over the place in my head. even as a child i must have been a heavy sleeper as i slept right through it.
  14. before you decide how good or bad it is you should get 2-3" taken off the end as that will tell you what state it's in. if it's off the ground then i reckon it'll be fine.
  15. i am a trained joiner and as long as i can get hold of the wood i'll make it to your specifications. so yes i can make waney edged tables. do you have an image in mind (internet picture) of the sort of table you are after?
  16. pm sent. i made one of these a couple of years ago. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/60100-all-my-woodwork-so-far.html .
  17. it can often depend on the timbers being milled as there are woods that dry very well and don't really need sealing for the drying process. there are some timbers on the other hand that will always need sealing and these are usually the harder of the hardwood species. what are you cutting up?
  18. i may be wrong but the tree will only be brown if it was infected whilst still alive. i thought the beefsteak fungus was symbiotic with the host and that further colouration would cease if the tree died? anyone who knows otherwise please correct me if i'm incorrect...
  19. i am one of those people who speaks their mind. i apologise if people don't like it.
  20. a nasty accident yes and my thoughts go out to his family, but he was trying to kick something into the machine... that sort of accident usually gets you a darwin award.
  21. this statement surprises me, what i had lasted for ages.
  22. whats the benifit of doing that then?
  23. i've often heard that oaks can be left for decades and they are usually ok but 15 years does sound a long time. perhaps in this case you should wait till it's down? if it doesn't explode when it hits the deck it should be fine...
  24. hey big j, i would have thought this one would suit a chap of your stature? .
  25. for my money a biscuit jointer is a biscuit jointer. go for a deal on ebay. i got a good dewalt fairly cheaply.
