  1. i thought lots of tree surgeons became timber merchants.
  2. pics of the bark would help. i can't see any medullary rays so think it may be something else. split a lump and smooth it off take a pick and it might be more obvious to me... it looks a bit like a birch at first glance but is the wood brown?
  3. don't think they ever made any??? i would think that it would be fairly easy to rig up an old belt driven one though.
  4. i don't remember it as i was 4. i did however sleep through it.
  5. i thought the storm was in 1987?
  6. american black walnut (juglans nigra) is so called because of it's dark/black bark rather than the silvery barked common walnut. that pic looks silvery to me.
  7. living round the corner from dorney lake i got to see the paralympics and on the way to your stand there were loads of olympic tents some of which had rowing machines in. they sat you down in fours and you were in a race. never having rowed before i fell off my seat and after the nice lady got me back on i didn't bother rowing that hard as i knew i would not win the computer game we were hooked up to. well actually i came first out of the four of us and was 1st on the timing screen. as we came back from the grandstand a few hours later i walked back over to the tent as i wanted to see if i was still on the screen, i was 4th... i fell off my seat and did not row for 10 out of the 50seconds everyone else rowed and i was still 4th out of the whole day. maybe i should take it up???
  8. i was thinking walnut and scrolling down to see others thinking the same is reassuring that it probably is walnut.
  9. i know nothing about trimming trees i'm afraid as i'm a woodworker not a tree surgeon. the berries as you call them will be classed as figs (presuming that is what the tree turns out to be) just not the variety you get in the shops.
  10. i'd say that it's a fig tree (ficus) but which species i would not know as there are 850.
  11. also a small catalpa crotch that i've split for a lovely book matched pair of winged bowls. these are only roughed out at the moment, i'll finish them in a few months when they are dry. .
  12. can't remember if i got round to posting these or not. some of the nests i made from clives beautiful walnut tree. .
  13. having never sat on any i can't say what are comfy and what aren't.
  14. tree number 2 is silver birch.
  15. for such a wide piece regardless of how short it is i would be happy to pay up to£75 but no more. if it's not sound then don't just ring it up as i might be interested in some for a drum shell i must turn and cherry would be a good wood to do it in. just keep it as long as possible.
  16. why not do as bigfella suggests and simply use a sheet of white magnetic to cover it when subbing.
  17. here is his own website. Full Grown
  18. as a turner i generate alot of cubic meters over the year and have modified my extractor to dump it straight into a wheelie bin, when its full up it goes to a guy who farms chickens. the dust from the saw goes to the tip but some has gone to people with composting loo's.
  19. there are a few good ones on ebay at the moment. Planer Thicknesser Dominion DAA 24" X 9" Ford Motor Co £3750 + Vat £4500 | eBay Wadkin RM 24? Planer Thicknesser | eBay WADKIN RK630 24X9 THICKNESSER- SAW MILL WOODWORKING MACHINE | eBay
  20. good aim, at least that means i don't have to find it now...
  21. chop off one end first to see what the wood looks like, then think about milling. 2" air dried should be about £30
  22. the bottom section before it starts getting really knotty yes, the rest is too knotty and is best added to the fire pile.
  23. how huge is huge??? be a shame to log it up as i always like to see big old trees milled if possible, i think there should be some sort of law to make sure the timber is used and not burned.
  24. As you are not a million miles away, why don't you pop round and i'll give you a crash course.
  25. depends what you want to turn. face plates are usually for larger work but you can do bowls on them. check ebay for old chisels mate.
