  1. Hmm, don't think I'll put a blade through them until I have a bit more info on how to get the best quality boards. I'll take some photos of logs and post them later
  2. Hi all, I am milling a large monkey puzzle tomorrow, 3 lumps at 10ft long each over the 30 ft it tapers from 3ft 6" to 2ft 6". im not sure what it will get used for, any advice on what thickness i should mill it? if it can be milled too thin or thick and have problems drying? it has started to go a little brown around 12" across the middle of the heart on biggest section but is still solid. I am not sure what it is goin to be used for, most likely table tops, window cills and anything else i could persuade people to buy it for!!!! thanks, John
  3. I was scanning a few old posts on here and it was mentioned about a select double cut mill, i was intrigued and looked it up, what a beast it looks and ..........theirs one for sale in uk, someone buy it, get it set up and let me come and perv at it Select Double Cut 4221 Horizontal Bandmill Log Deck Outfeed Deck 4016 TCR New and Used Sawmill & Woodworking Machinery & Blue Diamond
  4. i take it there is no log turner on this? or can you just not see the mechanism in the photos?
  5. the mill in devon was cheaper? can i ask how much it was? i have spoken to the guy and he seems pretty genuine, he was up for me coming up to take it away, usually scammers want to 'post' it to you without you coming to look at it. He has some old 3 phase tools as well
  6. Thought i'd post this ad, I spoke to the seller about the Arrowsmith Kiln, but unfortunately it had already sold!!!! i dont think it seems very bad money at all considering it has a 5 foot slabber too, i am tempted but at the moment i have unlimited access to a old LT25 so dont need the outlay, and a fancy a band will if things work out. Lucas Portable Sawmill Model 8. 8 1/2" cut Plus Slabbing Attachment will cut up to 5 Feet wide | United Kingdom | Gumtree
  7. what thickness did you mill them at? any idea how long the tree has been dead before milling? I may have an elm butt too look at but think it was cut in the 80's so imagine it is rotten but dont know how it lasts, or if it has been lying in mud out out of the ground
  8. i know it would be more money but i was thinking of putting something a bit bigger than the B&S 11hp on currently, something like a honda gx V-twin 20HP, or convert it to either hydrolic using a hedge cutter motor or 3 phase electric. with an engine at 1k, plus blade plus paying £3000 top of estimte that puts it at £4300 ish, i could get a new lumbermate LM29 with electric motor for £4800, prob a Hudson for a bit less for a smaller mill
  9. no sure stan, i think philp has had the mill as an ex demo model from woodmizer late 90's but not 100%, i'll ask him when i see him next
  10. After a bit of guidance again.... A friend of mine who cuts up my saw logs unexpectedly offered me his woodmizer for sale, the only problem is neither of us know what it is worth, It is a LT25, i think it was manufactured in 1995, seems a good machine, everything is manual, which does not bother me for the amount i will use it as it will be easy to fix. two problems are that it has been stated to me by the owner that the engine is on its way out and the blade tensioner does not hold in the position it is set it, i presume it is a oil seal as it does slack after a minute or two. Any advice would be helpful to see if we can strike a deal. Please see photos below PS it has spent all its life under cover. thanks in advance John
  11. i think they had a 238 (well quite a bit bigger one that 28inch max log) on ebay for ages that look mint, ex demo, think it was about 5,700 ish INC VAT, i wish i'd had a go at it now, but always seem to fail to save enough money before i can get one. it was quote a bit bigger and looked a lot beefier than the 228
  12. Hi Lee, out of intrest are the prices from just saws who are dealers for hudson, or from hudson in america directly? if direct from america are the mill the CE marked version of the mills? is this 'in uk price?' thanks, John
  13. would you not be better off getting a biomass boiler, i think that the RHI payments are better, but not 100% sure. Is your house well insulated with underfloor heating? that will give best efficiency for heat pumps, i have looked at a few installs with a renewable's company i work with in ireland and they will not touch a big old house ran off radiators as it will be not much better than 1 to 1 electric heating!!
  14. PM sent
  15. Hi All, i have the same old question........ a friend has offered me some big sections of cherry, please see photos attached. I am after some advice on a fair price to pay for the cherry, i dont want to under pay for the timber, but at the same time i do not want to pay over the odds. the 2 pictures of the single log taken from each end is the biggest stick, the main stem and measures 80" around the mid point and is 15 foot long. the 2 photos of the 3 small lumps are from branches, they measure as follows: 47" mid point circumference X 10' long 42" mid point circumference X 10' long 30" mid point circumference X 7' long thanks in advance, John
  16. Hi, sawmill looks amazing. I know a fellow who had a 3ph genny running off a 4 pot kubota engine, not sure what the output was, he had it until he got mains to his (yes cumbria is a little behind the times!!!) he is connected up so it was for sale. do you want me to ask him if he still has it, cost and output?
  17. eye, she shy on heartwood, is all the rest sapwood that is alive or does it die off and take a long time to darken to the sought after heartwood? a bit off topic from original post, just wondered
  18. just to add another 2p worth, larch moves a fair bit if green and in central heated room, i fitted a 6X8 larch lintel in a not very warm house just before christmas and theres a 5mm wide X 75mm long shake so think it would easily open up if less than 50mm thick all round
  19. if you look on my profile there is one album on it with photos of how i covered some crappy softwood lintels with elm, each with 2 bits of timber, far more stable as it does not matter about cracking etc. you need a bit of width but it works out really well. Regarding fire regs you can get around it 2 ways, one get a suitably qualified person to calculate the amount of 'sacrificial char wood' needed to give you your fire protection or buy a fireproof varnish, last time we did it you buy and tin, follow instructions and fill in a certificate, its expensive but gets around the problem.
  20. there is one in the same hedgerow about 5m away that is as dead as a doornail
  21. if i can get some going i'm going to plant them all over the place, my dads, farther in laws farm, my place and anywhere that will have em, i love elm as a timber, if cuttings sprout and are not resilient and get DED iv not lost a lot apart form a little time and i think its well worth a go!!! I love elm as a timber and think its such a shame its mostly gone
  22. sorry to sound thick alec but what do you mean my softwood and hardwood cuttings? when u say put in a clear plastic bag, do you mean seal it? if so will this not isolate the cutting from co2 etc?
  23. out of interest, how would you fix the miter joints? biscuit joint? domino? dowel? or any of above?
  24. Hi All, I am putting this post in the milling forum as that is where 90% of my posts have been and in the tree identification forum too. I am after some more advice from everyone…. Again!!! I have these 3 trees on my drive and I am not sure of the species, I am hoping they are elm, but not sure, can anyone help identify please? As you can see from the photos some of the small limbs have died, but there is certainly new growth too. My next question is, if they are Elm, could it be that they are pretty resilient to Dutch Elm disease? If so I would like to take as many cuttings as I can and see if I can get some going but have absolutely no experience of doing this what so ever, so any advice on that too would be appreciated. Regards, John
