  1. Think thats my plan Matt. Yes other woods are better but got these for firewood money so worth a go I think. Might even try charring them a bit first as well
  2. Yes seen this with our present basic sheds. Rot out just below ground level yet the wood below looks OK. Seen charring of the outer edge suggested as rot inhibitor but anyone tried it?
  3. As I say I can give them a good treatment of Creosote first but they are not dry yet so doubt they will soak up a lot.
  4. Sadly the ground is often waterlogged in winter with the water table pretty much at the surface so they will be wet a lot of the time regardless of bedding material.
  5. Thanks Steve. 10 years would be great but yes they would be sunk into the ground but treated as best I can below ground level.
  6. As above really. Last load of firewood had some nice long lengths of douglas that would make good poles for a small shed. Wondering if I give them a good coat of Creosote how long they my last? some are large enough to get a few plank out of as well to make perlins.
  7. Our stove (Saey Scope) wares out the pin the latch engages with. Have to change it from time to time or the door does not properly seal
  8. Usual cause of squeaking is the scrapers that are under the box of the ram. A quick squirt of oil sorts it fine
  9. I would be pretty upset with that corrosion on a new truck! You should be fighting them all the way IMO. Mind you poor paint work seems to be the new norm for most brands. If they cant sort out a proper paint job see if you can get the cost of wax oiling out of them. Better than modern paint long term anyway.
  10. I just call it as I see it haha. Done some of the modifications to the retort you suggested and it's a definite improvement ?
  11. Thanks again Ernie. How do go about making an Adam retort. Am I right in thinking you buy plans? Interested in this aspect as I have a retort design but dont want to go into production but like the idea of selling plans
  12. I suspect because you wouldn't like the findings. I looked around for some info on this a short while ago to see if I should be trying to sell our waste charcoal as biochar but after reading this decided I would give it a miss. Mind you I did read some similar findings that mention it's abilities of water retention but cant find that now. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170425131407.htm
  13. It's one of the heavier dense hardwoods we have over here. Can be over 1000kg for a solid cubic meter.
  14. An IBC mounded up with wet beech comes in around 600 kg so you have around twice that plus its neatly stacked. Wet I would go for 1500 kg
  15. Yes roots can cause problems with water pipes. Just fixed one of our farm troughs just a couple of days ago. Large rood was pressing on the pipe and it had pushed it into a sharp rock causing the leak. Only got pictures of the bodged repair ?
  16. Dont think I could stand wearing one of those all day. If you do consider disposables these are pretty good and and dont mist up goggles. https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/personal-protection-and-clothing/disposable-respirator-masks/2405-ffp2d-dust-masks-with-ventex-valve--pack-of-20/p/ZT1178174X?utm_campaign=pla-Personal+Protection+%26+Clothing+-+&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping-pla&utm_keyword=ZT1178174X&istCompanyId=6aa6787b-063e-4414-802d-129f235df603&istItemId=wtqixlxrqx&istBid=tztx&gclid=CjwKCAjw68zZBRAnEiwACw0eYa3LXRYX3W0dPyNKcKB6aAKzCkjT4m1eMeTbMI8eEe_hSsUzDjeYmxoCfbYQAvD_BwE
  17. Had the same when looking to update ours. All said "oh very dated platform" you need this that and the other. We left it alone and still brings in plenty of work. A lot to be said for a site you can access and alter yourself.
  18. Not convinced that is helpful. They point out it burns OK but then say it's half the weight and the same calorific value! It's not half the weight and has a higher calorific value per dry kg. By their guide we would need to sell softwood for half the price.
  19. Ah yes that rings a bell. Will have another go some time and try to clean up the mess I have made. Thanks
  20. Had a play with one but sadly the staining went further in than hoped. Not too bad though unlike my turning. Got the inside reasonable and now needs sanding but keep having the gouge bite in when working the outside and cant for the life of remember how to avoid this. Only had basic lessons when at school so remind what I should be doing.
  21. The Navara snapped chassis group looks as busy as ever https://www.facebook.com/groups/505526562959686/ To be fair to Nissan they seem to honour the warrantee with the built in defect. Isuzu on the other hand say it's our drivings fault when there dodgy DPFs play up.
  22. Got some lumps of ripple sycamore I scavenged from the firewood. I roughed them out into blanks for the father in law but they are getting a green mould forming on them. I am not really a turner but own a lath and have seen blanks turned green and then set aside to dry. Thought I would try this with one to maybe speed drying and avoid the green mould taking over. How close to finished dimensions do you take them and do I now need to re seal the part turned blank?
  23. Me neither. He posted on Arbtalk Facebook on pricing a job. Customer had winced at the price that he thought fair. Worked out at £74 an hour including driving. How can you charge that per hour do 126 hour weeks and not be VAT registered? As Steve says though something maybe lost in translation and I admire his enthusiasm. Good luck to you Stefan regardless but no work is worth an early grave IMO
  24. Pleased to see the end of the hot weather. Cooler Atlantic air is most welcome
  25. Just reading about Fernando Alonso racing for Toyota and read this bit from the BBC Toyota are effectively without direct opposition at Le Mans this year because they are the only team racing in the leading LMP1 hybrid class, following the withdrawal at the end of last season of champions Porsche. The other LMP1 cars, which are not hybrids and are run by privateer teams, have a series of handicaps laid out in the rules. They are not allowed to lap faster the Toyotas, and if they do, they are called in to the pits for a drive-through penalty. Hybrids can do 11 laps between fuel stops and non-hybrids only 10 and hybrids have a minimum pit-stop time five seconds shorter than the non-hybrids.
