    Emigrating

I think it was Cecil Rhodes of de Beers fame who said that
  2. thanks lads
  3. I read the first page and thought oh yea might have to get one, just read the last page now im not so sure! Can someone please summarise the issues with this saw i dont feel like reading through 69 pages haha cheers
  4. cut the pegs off , dont drill the helmet
  5. great work. careful with the one handed cutting though. also I personally like to keep my saw short stropped on harness rather than letting it hang so low. saves it getting bashed on the tree as you climb around
  6. Twice over 2 years I have had an engel fridge (worth $1299) stolen off the back of the ute. Twice insurance has asked for a receipt, I havnt been able to find it, so they have been happy with a photo of it on my ute (any old photo I could find of my ute which had the fridge in shot) & a police crime number & they have wired money into my account. Maybe insurance in australia is a bit easier to deal with.
  7. boss man has hit the nail on the head its perhaps marginly better here in australia, but there are still plenty of mobs running around thinking they are making good money but their ancient knackered trucks & chippers suggest to me that they are not making enough to reninvest into the business. One guy I contract too tells clients he will beat any quote "its better to have work than not have work" problem is that means he doesnt have enogh on jobs so then he pushes his workers to get an unrealistic amount done in a day so as to pass a profit. basically just means his workers always get the short end of the stick, often getting sent to underquoted jobs
  8. here in aus its pretty standard for a contract climber to bring his own rigging kit & all saws (although i only have 201 & 460, 661 is on the cards). Contractors here charge $450 - $1000 a day though depending on skills, equipment & who the client is (charge more for a lopper with no clue as you know the day is going to be harder, less smooth running!)
  9. Information overload for me there! My experience of working here is that as a minimum any arborist (as opposed to a 'lopper') would have a cert III in arb https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/AHC30810# that is in contrast to my experiences of working in the UK where most people just had 30,31,38 & 39. Basic compentency tickets. So even if they have renamed / rebadged them in the UK & they are now recognised in oz (i dont know if this is the case or not) they would still not be recognised as actual arb Qualifications. I think what im trying to say is you need a minimum of cert III here to be an arborist.
  10. do your diploma, when i came here 6 yrs ago my NPTC certificates wernt worth **** . I had to redo aus standard ones. i manged to get sponsored on a 457 but that was largely relying on past experience in the industry as i had no formal qualifications. If i had a diploma would have been much easier. Defintely worth doing some proper quals NPTC is nothing really just a compitency for using various bits of equipment etc
  11. nah i guess that works , iv just only ever seen a pulley used with a french prussick tied not an english prussik. Haha, sneaky
  12. and the biner isnt clipped into the D ring on your harness, might be a good place to start!
  13. looks like an english prussik you have tied so you dont need the pulley. also looks like the pole belt isnt running through the pulley anyway so its not doing anything?
  14. DEfintely a scam, way too cheap and seller has no feedback. I was looking at getting a cruiser 3 yrs ago here in Vic, with $20-$25k to spend. most in my price range were early 90s, non turbo with 350k km ++ .
  15. Very little rain?! Depending on where in QLD that is from its quite possible its seen more!
  16. There is a page on facebook, 'Vic Tree Climbers' join that page and put a post up, you should get some interest.
  17. aluminum wedges? thats all i use for felling. by the way when i hit a log when splitting and the splitter gets stuck in the log, to the point i cant get it out... i grab a saw & bore a small cut about an inch away from the head of the splitter and an inch or two deep.... usually relieves the pressure enough that the head will come out
  18. guys, relax! you've completely taken the thread off topic if you must bicker why not do it via Pm.no need to air your laundry in public!
  19. yeh i went back in 2010, loved it now i want to take the mrs there! will shoot you a message when i go , see if you want to sail over for a beer or two
  20. Melbourne, been here 5 years. Hervey Bay would be a treat especially this time of year! You get over to Fraser much? Im planning on roadtripping it up in Oct or November, will probably go from Rainbow Beach though
  21. red gum splits a treat! youre right on the little chippers though, i wouldnt be able to go back to them
  22. its a shame, imagine a big river red gum or yellow box growing in England! it would be a sight.
  23. most euc is great fire wood. greybox, yellow box, sugar gum, red gum... these are some of the best burning woods out there! i dont know which of those grow in the UK though.
  24. Depends, with a family youre probably right. but iv been here 5 years and my wage as full time employee started at $22 ph & steadily increased to $30, now on $500 a day as a subby climber. I always managed fine, but as is always the way i cant imagine going back to anything less than $30 now, lived in melbourne the whole time.
