  1. carvings evolve as you work on them. sometimes they evolve good well done
  2. Tulip? I thought it looked like an Elm
  3. have a look at the back under 'cleanign instructions'. if you can clean teh brush with water+soap its water soluble and i dont have much liking for it. if it says white spirits need to be used then its good to go
  4. great piece Will
  5. go for a high grade grit, a few hundred thin the varnish with white spirit (unless its one of those rubbish water-soluble varnishes?)
  6. local shows is good exposure consider maybe contacting a couple of local amenities/nurseries/schools and offer to do something for them for free and then get it into the local paper also helps got a facebook page? see if there is a local facebook group for your local area and join it and offer on there to do something for the local schools... its all about getting your work seen and, if its good, people will remember it and you will get commissions
  7. bit far for me sorry
  8. if i ever get this dam burr bowl finish ill post pics
  9. funny flying too! summer time, when out on a boat fishing, you drive past so many and they are just comical trying to take off. Its like they are doing it for the first time every time. Only bird with that kid of beak-hinge though, like mole grips, not pliers, so they can hold lots of small fish
  10. like the fishes, nice touch
  11. dam good work steve
  12. great pieces, puts me to shame. What do you use for finishing?
  13. There are a few of us here in Scotland. Im based over by Aberdeen and if you ever get up round here, let me know. Hammish is based close to you just south of Glasgow, im sure he will pop on at some point Gobby has given some good avice there, also trawl back through the old threads on this forum and you will find tonnes of good advice best thing is to just keep carving. you learn somethign new from every piece you make, i do still
  14. great one mate
  15. If your flaps get clogged up (yes, i know) just give them a few strokes with a wire brush and you will be good to go again Most of my carvings are on fairly green softwood and I use the flap sanders a lot
  16. I can pass that on to the Stonehaven turning club if you like?
  17. H Wallace, seemed to have a good reputation when i was looking aroung 2 years ago.
  18. the 'get well soon' cake?
  19. Nice one Matt, but do let us know when you get out of hospital and have learnt to walk again (once the wife sees that)
  20. I carve a few spoons now and then. I find it very peaceful when its going well and frustrating as hell when it isnt! This was one i did as a wedding gift recently, carved from ash
  21. Its to make a cone shape, not hollow, so i would turn it from a cylinder or a block could you Pm me some prices mate? then ill just pass them on to him mahogany, wenge cedar and makore thanks
  22. Hey chaps a mate of mine regularly comes up with 'ideas' for making audio equipment/housings that rarely come to anything but he is a mate so i humor him the current idea is for a pair of 'cones' to sit on top of...god knows what, but to make them i will need some seasoned wood to turn. Given they are prototypes im likely to need to mess about a bit to get exactly what he wants. unfortunately I dont have any seasoned wood that would do the job. so, my question is, do any of you people have say 3 bits of seasoned wood roughly 12cm x 12cm x 8cm? exactly what wood is not so important but, to use his words, 'something at least a bit pretty' if you do please give an idea of price to sell em and post up to scotland and ill pass it on to him. many thanks. Dave
  23. nice one pig great composition
  24. thanks lads, i knew there would be somebody who knew a solution and yes, m5, m9 would be huge!
  25. Hi all whilst trying to avoid the predictable 'should have got a stihl/echo' I need some advice on my saw. I have a 372XP which regularly spits bolts out. not from the engine or anywhere essential, just the bolts that hold teh engine cover in place and, more recently, the bolts that hold the pull-start assembly to the main body. Does anyone know what bolts i need to get to replace them? Im guessing M9 bolts? but no idea what length. I tried asking husky main-website but they were bloody useless ta Dave
