  2. As I started reading that post I thought it was going to end..... "...for taking your children to an African doctor...!" Have you turned a corner matelot? Is this the start of a beautiful, compassionate re-birth? (Only playing fella, no aggression or offence intended - just having a hoot!)
  3. In which way (if you don't mind me asking ) Higher or lower??
  4. Labour - where does it go now.....? Potentially 10 years and 2 general elections before they stand a chance of recovering.... Ha! Now you know how the country feels about Labour! The note saying there's no money left, not quite so funny today huh.....?
  5. Oh, apparently, it means something else, better get my boots on 😟
  6. Wife's running around, shouting & cheering "Balls out", reckon I'll be late for work then!!
  7. 5 ½ hrs drive each way, why is everything so far away 😏
  8. Gary Glitter could have been elected if he stood for Labour in Sunderland!
  9. It pains me to say it, but I think Lab may just nip in. In one respect, that might be a good thing. They'll royally (ed) balls it up and that'll be Lab done for good - never again! I can bear 5 years of turmoil to see the back of them idiots. (same applies SNP!)
  10. That wasn't quite what I meant, but did make me chuckle! Those were the exploitative circumstances that are (hopefully) behind us and I'd say the union movement and latterly H&S are much to be appreciated for that. Is there a future for the union movement now that legislation dictates working standards, practices and pay, well that's a subject for another thread. Has H&S become a millstone, well I guess that's dependant on wether you're a victim of poor practice or an operator feeling constrained by it. Good show though - George Gently, enjoyed it, good TV drama for a change.
  11. For the OP, you could shake yourself senseless trying to fathom someone else's pricing policy. Even though it grates when you lose one you really wanted, it's just one of life's great mysteries. We quoted for a site clearance recently, PM said he had 3 quotes, mine and 1 other were pence apart but 3rd was 65% less. So they were going for that one. I can't fathom that unless: Someone is taking work at a loss for work's sake. The PM is trying his arm. The quotes are not like-for-like. On reflection, we may have dodged a bullet on that one. I now know about one of my mates with a swing shovel who had to take legal action for payment from this outfit on a different project.
  12. Ha, ha! I stumbled off to bed! Stephen sums it up very well I think! In a bracket: if it was a "friend in need", do it for a fry up! (Although I still haven't had the fry up I was promised last time I did a job for a friend 😬) If it was Mr awkward and I wasn't really bothered, could be £150-200 / tree + weigh in for green waste. It's an interesting one, with your big kit, time on site could be a day or less, stick it in a corner, sort it out later. Mondeo man could be there a fortnight faffing around. On reflection, 1500-2000 if there were no "difficult" customer issues I guess and there's still wiggle room if it was a job that I really wanted to challenge for.
  13. It's not possible! Too many missing variables (cop-out!) How far away? Arisings to weigh in or "alternative"? Current workload? Timeline to complete? Is it a "decent" customer? Potential future / continued work? It's a perennial dilemma, price the job, price per tree or price by estimated time. Or a combination of all of the above. Don't know, can't do it, wish I hadn't commented? Can I withdraw my previous (spiced rum induced) input??
  14. 70-90 £ / tree? Even with economy of scale, ease of access etc Interesting question though, 2 (good) guys, 2 days. 1.4-1.8k cheap I'd say.
  15. Anyone watching "George Gently?"
  16. I like that Eddie, trees span the generations, link us to the past and the future. The day of my grandfather's funeral I went and sat under a row of trees he planted. I remembered him showing them to me when I was a boy, I was impressed then and have been ever since.
  17. Go on then Mr Eggs, I'll take the bait! (Although I probably don't fully qualify as a "Tory boy") Isn't Lancashire county council Labour majority? Are they not empowered to manage at the local level? Isn't it just bluster, smoke, mirrors & misinformation for regional / local government to suggest that local level management is the responsibility of national government? There is still masses of inefficiency in public sector. It's about time the so called CEOs of councils (commonly earning 6 figure salaries) started managing effectively and stopped headlining with "it's central government's fault" for cutting our funding and choosing to cut or charge for services that are the easiest targets then tagging central government as the villain. Having said all that, I agree that charging at domestic waste sites is short sighted and flawed. That's an example (IMO) of poor leadership from council cabinet / CEOs. We've just recently travelled down this path in Cornwall and yes, early stats suggest that fly tipping has increased. I'd agree, on the whole, that the measure is going to be counter productive and that improved control of trade waste going through the domestic route would be a better approach. Is it a matter of national politics though? Not so sure.....
  18. Bloody hell Steve, have you had a night at a crack house?
  19. Might as well forget the courts for all the good they do. Imagine the cost saving if ASBO, petty criminals and thieves were put in the stocks and publicly flogged. Maybe there's something to be taken from sharia law after all??
