  1. Your money would better spent relocating the path / patio.... Or issuing hard hats. Sounds like a fools errand as described above.
  2. What were the hoops that have done for you John? I registered for air dried arb arisings and producer/supplier for pellets, didn't find it too taxing - 10 mins on each of the forms, just put arb arisings in the box that needed all the sustainability surveys etc. They went straight through. Only hiccup was they thought my 2 separate applications were 1 and that I'd submitted it twice with pellets in error. Sorted that out over the phone and explained it was 2 separate app's. I've done 1 round of quarterly returns. Haven't found it too taxing as yet unless there's something lurking 'round the corner. Sold 10 cubes last quarter, had a panic phone call from another user Friday asking for 10 cubes and have a couple of known users waiting for some when it becomes available. Are you RHI kiln drying by any chance? Is it that which adds layers of admin and complexity?
  3. Big 2? There's the Sthil but can't think what the other one might be......
  4. I like the NTSG guidance and very often paste the link into quotes so that potential customers can take a more informed decision. It's compact, gives scenario based examples, is easily digestible and is suitable for home and estate owners. All round a good resource I think. I'm not sure it's that controversial to say some may over egg or not really comprehend the reality of risk but I'd think it more common that home owners want solutions rather than option. A fine balance.
  5. You must have been having a quiet night looking up old threads last night fella? Don't be too shocked, your assessment is fairly accurate and I accord with Big J's following observations. I absolutely and fundamentally support the provision of a welfare safety system in a so called advanced society. But that's not what we currently have in UK.
  6. It has some merit perhaps, in a particular context. And the parallel opinions were apparent in the thread you had about the churchyard tree with partial crown dieback. It struck me from that thread, and possibly similar in this one, how opinions can be polarised depending upon the (real or imagined / knowledge or not so / liability for payment / non liability for payment) eye of the beholder. Is it easier to consider and propose technically achievable arboricultural options, possibly with ongoing maintenance/ management commitments, when you're not spending your own / customers money? Really, "the broader context" (in the real world) has to include how willing the owner is to listen to potentially expensive options and how willing the person exposed to the (real or imagined) risk is to reassurance. "Risk entrepreneur" tends to suggest someone might seek to profit from over egging a potential risk. I'm not saying there aren't folks out there that would employ the old rogue traders disappearing screwdriver trick, but hopefully the tatty transit, padded cheque shirt and dishevelled appearance would give their game away before any meaningful debate about retain / remove even started!
  7. What about this one Jon? Rated line pull : 8,000 lbs. Line speed : 50 meters per minute
  8. Google LOLER ACOP http://www.hse.gov.uk/work-equipment-machinery/loler.htm I think your assumption that it may not apply because you don't employ may be flawed. I've had a read to check for my own interest ref tipper trailer. I think it wouldn't apply because it's not lifting a load clear of the ground but will need to read again to be certain. Maybe Paul or LOLER UK may have a definitive answer
  9. Especially when they've had the quote for months but phone up and ask if it can be done next week! Might do a rainy job on a Weds before the kit goes away for the weekend, but not on a Mon or Tues.
  10. Just thinking along similar lines! Perhaps a letter to the school expressing your concern and asking for a copy of the latest inspection report. It might just jolt them into realising they may be exposing their pupils to risk that they have (probably) not even considered. Wife & I visited 5 primary schools recently to see which one the nipper might attend next year. They all had active outdoor activities and some had "forest school" areas. Naturally I looked quite closely at those areas and enquired about safety inspections. Without exception - blank looks! Worrying really but also ripe for business.
  11. 3-4 mins Jon? It's got it's place, but it ain't like a powered winch. Horses for courses an all that 👍🏻
  12. Hang on! Continuity Error!! When did you start putting a "h" in Jon / John??
  13. Wouldn't be without one! It packs a punch well beyond its weight (esp if used with appropriate multiplying blocks!) 👍🏻
  14. Agreed! Time people took settling their accounts seriously.
  15. Having to chase up for payment really grips me. It's admin and hassle that distracts from more productive work. I've only got 2 left that are habitual "oh, could you just..." and "payment should be in this week..." types. 1 is a big outfit the other a domestic. The big outfit are an admin shambles with a standard payment term of end of the month following receipt of invoice. I don't mind waiting but I don't like having to chase up when it (invariably) passes even that lead time. They get job + 20-30% (depending how I feel on the day) slapped on top at invoice time now to cover my inconvenience. Not bothered if they go elsewhere, they're such a shambles it's always last minute emergency work so, as it stands, they need me (occasionally) more than I need them. The domestic one has had felling & clean up but want stump grinding some time soon. I'll give them a price and say work starts when funds are received. If they don't like it they can do one.
  16. Taw Wood and Tree Surgeon? Sorry! Couldn't resist!! Taw Tree Surgeon? Taw Tree Specialist? Says where you are and what you do and the abbreviation could work well on T shirt / business card etc.
  17. It's Sunday night, it's the end of the holiday season, I've got to do tax and paperwork tomorrow, I'm grumpy and drinking Dalwhinnie, so please don't take this the wrong way..... Although you probably will, and then they'll be a bandwagon of other outraged and offended individuals.... (but that's kind of fun if you like a wind up....) So in response to your question..... Please! Can't you even start by suggesting some 'king business names that we can comment on rather than asking everyone to tell you what to call yourself?
  18. Bugger! Now I had to go look at that thread (which I'd been purposely avoiding) to understand what was happening!
  19. Tricky situation. Difficult to add the contingency into the quote, what happens if you don't find the metal? Give a reduced price? Hedgerow trees fairly likely to have barbed wire (at least.) When I've found it before, I've just left it - explained to customer "I'm not cutting that, it's full of..... " (whatever it is) Or they can stump up whatever extra is needed to sort it out.
