  1. Inonotus Dryadeus on Oak ? Sounds like the decay is quite established at the base of the stem, plenty of epicormic shoots on all branches and substantial deadwood visible. No targets so will just watch this one.
  2. Well done mate, just goes to show where a positive attitude gets you Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. 'Yobbo's with chainsaws' Hilarious! W
  4. I'm only just getting into the at times bewildering world of fungi so maybe someone might know of courses available. But I think the knowledge I take from this forum will stand me in more than good stead for my career in arb. W
  5. I'd start by getting hold of a certain app! keep your eyes peeled and when you find them post lots of pictures, have a shot yourself and wait for the wisdom and knowledge from folks on here to flow your way. P.S its quite addictive!
  6. Thanks guys, wondering if 2 days is going to be enough. Jamie, thats a very kind offer and will take you up on it, cant beat a bit of local knowledge. Will PM you nearer the time. Thanks Warren
  7. Cheers Graham, pretty close to where we're staying so will take a look. W
  8. Whilst really suffering from the worst case of man flu I decided to book a weekend away for my 40th in August. Have found somewhere to stay which is in Clearwell, about 7 miles from Monmouth. So I'm looking for any suggestions for areas to go which are good for veterens (trees) or woodland archaeology from anyone who lives nearby or knows the area. Any suggestions much appreciated. Warren
  9. "The parasitic fungus gradually takes over the ant's brain and directs the insect to a cool, moist location. The fungus then kills the ant, and fruiting bodies erupt from the ant's head and spread more spores." Lets hope this fungus does'nt adapt to infect humans in years to come. Can't see that being a pleasant way to go. 'Night of the living fungi'
  10. Ouch! I pay about £100 a quarter for elec so sounds a lot to me. W
  11. Leave it be, Unless you've noticed movement in the ground I can't see that tree going anywhere for a long time. Maybe clean up some of those stubs though. W
  12. Thanks for your input guys, I'm going to have a closer inspection of remaining roots this week. As said the tree is coming down but to hedge height so may be able to furthur document any developments, fb's etc. W
  13. I was planting a hedge yesterday and the spade went right through a 4" in diameter root from a nearby twinned stem ash(approx 2 m away). I took a section out and the whole root was like a sponge with evidence of a decay fungi. Nice smell so my instant thought was Armillaria. Identified the root closer to the stem and had bit of a scrape as the tree is to be removed later this year. Again, a white mycelium present under the bark but otherwise relatively untouched. Looked at the overall health of the crown, which is good and spotted what I think, considering the host an I. hispidus fb about 25' up next to a old pruning cut. Base of tree looks ok with bark intact all round so no evidence of rhizomorphs developing. Have a look at pics and thpughts welcomed. Warren
  14. Thats serious stuff Deeco, are any of the other islands/mainlands affected to that extent ? W
  15. Hi Andrew, did you have a cortisone injection before, its been advised to me but even with that the doctor recommends 2 weeks off. Warren
  16. Ooh, those are hardcore arb porn shots, looks gooood. W
  17. Nice job they've done, hope it heals quick mate.
  18. No problem mate, theres plenty of good advise on this here forum, folks who genuinely enjoy passing on their knowledge. Yes I think your probably paying 3 times as much as I paid for my fees. Might be worth spending the third years fees on arb specific qualifications, and tickets. But this course will give you a good understanding of the environment in which trees live and the effect of different management practices on them. W:thumbup:
  19. I see more and more street trees being done here with an MEWP. Hold the saw out, rev it and move the platform round the tree.
  20. Best of luck today mate, remember the assessor's not there to fail you. Take your time and keep the saw level. W
  21. Hi Woodguy If you go onto Treeworks website and go into publications at the top the rest are there. A fair bit of reading, but well worth it I would think. Warren
