  1. Playing devils advocate To make something safer isn't there a presumption that there would be a failure without an action being taken? How are you predicting one included union will fail before the next inspection and another one will not? (Having spent several days viewing beech trees with typical, for beech, included bark unions.
  2. I remember my lad, probably only seven or eight at the time, telling a new groundsman to wait, "Dad'll be dropping that branch next, don't go under til he's done it" Think the new groundsman was a bit bit peeved though, when asked if he'd screwed the gate shut properly before sending up a re-fueled saw! He always was a bossy little bugger.
  3. Don't tell the owner it's dying, they'll want it out. It's in a late growth/late mature, whatever - forming a new smaller crown as they don't really extend for-ever. Can't really tell from the photo's but it looks to be re-iterating well so hopefully will recover from whatever has stressed it and will be good for a couple more centuries
  4. a, I was trying to remember the additional ingredient to my home-made flapjacks yrs ago

  6. Just been looking at the ingredients; Nutritional values per 100g Calorific value: 1920 kJ / 420 kcal Fat: 17.3 g of which saturated fatty acids: 8.6 g Carbohydrates: 53.1 g of which sugar: 15.4 g Protein: 14.5 g Salt: 0.48 g Fiber: 7.1 g Ever thought of knocking up your own flapjacks? Keep for weeks in an air-tight container. Best thing I ever found, through reading, for slow release carbs is plain old oatmeal. Grind it up and add to milk drinks, crushed nuts for good fats and and even more calories
  7. Do you have take stem cells or is it a genetic modification?
  8. Was she surprised when she caught you taking naked photo's in front of her mirror?

  10. In a nutshell. To help revitalise the sub-forum, why not write some? Not a dig Wisewood, people moan about the lack of activity but do nothing to encourage it. Sometimes Steve the lack of moderators/active moderation is quite obvious. And I'm not casting stones in any way. People are busy in life but over the last couple of years the lack of moderators has become very much apparent., to the extent that even some of he membership are trying to reign in the more out of order posters.
  11. "The disease issue is a try on." Or lack of knowledge? Kinda share your thoughts but it's an otherwise healthy tree contributing a lot to the local environment. Don't know what the owners feeling are about it and I'll keep out of the debate of should it stay or go. That's something that a good arb should discuss face to face with the owner...(probably)
  12. Britishness? The 'cricket test' surely "colonising a territory " - well for a lot of nationalities it would only be a case of getting their own back on the 'Empire' My point of view is that, like pet dogs and small children, some will push the boundaries of what you can get away with without consequences. And, some of got away with a hell of a lot, so it'll continue. It'll be really difficult to about face and kerb the 'freedoms' that they're used. I know it's a simplistic point of view. Without fear of punishment there is no law an order. And for some there hasn't been consequences for many years, things are ignored or simply brushed aside because authority is reluctant to act. I define basically good as treating others with respect, regardless of faith, colour, background etc. Treat others how you'd wish to be treated. Help others when you can. Basic morals and ethics.
  13. Don't know but apparently the HSE are investigating the absence of a rescue climber!
  14. You lot have got far too much time on your hands!
  15. But who do you ultimately blame? The culprits or the system that has pretty much said that they're above the law? I'm all for equality but there's something wrong when for fear of being seen as racist the playing field becomes distinctly sloping
  16. I know where you're coming from. Recently I'm getting to meet a lot of folk of all ages, nationalities and faiths, thankfully most of those I meet are the nicest that you could interact with. I still have some belief that most people are basically good.
  17. I just remember the pictures After someone reads the words to me I forget them...
  18. Not sure about 'infected' but if there's staining coming from around the unions of the stems it's probably no. You'll often see staining where water collects in pockets between stem that are full of organic debris (decomposing leaves and such). The water overflows and stains the bark below. But it looks like there are some other things that you may want to consider. The cracking in the adjacent wall is probably due to direct contact with the tree or it's roots. The unions look to contain included bark, so there is unlikely to be full annual rings surrounding the stem immediately below the point where all the ascending stems begin. I.e. A structurally poor union, with a slightly higher potential to fail. Ideally early pruning would have removed the competing stems to retain either one or two central stems ( if the angle between them was more u-shaped than V) On the plus side, the lighter smoother areas of bark identify parts that are growing rapidly in compensation for the physical stresses that the tree is under.Hard to see exactly what's going on from the photos but it wouldn't hurt to get an opinion from someone a bit more qualified.
  19. Can't remember where, may be in Giles Biddles writings, but there's one case where the soil is still 'heaving' twenty years on
  20. Knowing the area that'll be an uphill struggle. Rochdale and Oldham feel to be really edgy at the moment. It's odd that many of the older generation just want to live in peace but a lot of the younger ones don't. For many years now the police have taken an overly softly softly approach for fear of either allegations of racism or creating an increase in tension. It's back-fired terribly and now many think the law doesn't apply to them and they'll get away with just about anything. In the situation it doesn't need much of a spark to ignite trouble.
  21. Do you need to go to your safe place?
  22. If it was on Facebook or Twitter, it must be true
  23. Doesn't it just illustrate the state of desperation that is being reached, to uphold the will of the majority of the population, that he will try just about anything to get it done. MPs preventing exit should be ashamed.
  24. Goes without saying that all politicians are liars. What do you mean, if people kick up, that they are wrong uns? Having been thoroughly betrayed by our elected representatives who have blithely disregarded the the outcome of a democratic referendum, isn't it time to 'kick up'?
  25. My missus never uses top gear, no matter what the mph, and never has DPF problems EDIT: Other problems, most certainly, but DPF no.
