    Only thing I can think of is possibly they slam the wood through the saw a bit quick and the drive belts wear and eventually snap? I've got a Balfor saw bench, it seems pretty heavy and well built. I think the only thing I would change on it would be to add a conveyor. The Uniforest saws look very similar but just in a different colour. Posch always seem to get good reviews but they are a lot more money.

    With Oak you will be lucky if it's dry enough to burn by winter 2018 never mind this winter

    The only other conifer I've put through the saw bench was some that I felled for a friend in January. It was a different species to this and proper trees rather than a hedge. The saw bench cut that up no problem but it was nothing like as sappy as this was.

    Also made the mistake of forgetting my gloves so my hands got covered in black sap. Am I best stacking this outside somewhere to wash all the sap out or will it be ok stacked in my log store for a couple of years? Plenty of airflow in there, it just won't get any rain on it.

    There was nothing in the log. It just locked tight onto the blade. Had to cut all the rest slower to stop it happening again. Very strange

    My mate had a load of hedge taken down in his garden, some kind of conifer. He gave me the wood as he doesn't have a woodburner yet. It was felled in July. Very sappy. I decided to cut it the other day with my circular saw bench to get it out the way and once I got on to a bit that was about 8" diameter the saw blade got completely stuck in it. Had to stop the PTO and smash the log off it with a log pick. Only thing I could think was something to do with the sap getting hot when I was cutting and it set the sap hard all of a sudden? Don't deal with much softwood and certainly not stuff that's been recently summer felled so never had this happen before. Just curious as to what the problem could have been?

    We have a really old Hawthorn Tree that I already cut back a bit last winter. Now it's in full leaf I can see I should have taken quite a lot more off it. Would it be ok to cut it back now or should I wait until winter? I don't want to kill it. I'm talking about taking quite a few established branches off with a saw rather than trimming it with a hedge cutter.

    They are definitely expensive. Think mine was around £1600 just for the stove in Golden Fire Brown. Don't burnt anything other than wood in it seen as all my woods free. I know someone else with the same stove and he puts those anthracite nugget things in it for over night burning. You can get it to stay in overnight with wood but just takes a bit of practice

    We've got the Vision 500 with an external air feed. Can take a 15" log. I doubt you could light it at 8am and it still be burning 8 hours later though. Would have to have been burning for an hour or so to get a decent bottom in it before you throttle it back to tick over. The glass never goes black. Everyone I know that has a stove always has black glass. Whether that's down to the particular stove, they don't know how to operate it properly, they're burning unseasoned wood or a bit of all the above I don't know.

    Now I've seen those pictures I think it could have been a Starling not a Sparrow Thankfully our windows are tilt and turn so they open like a door. It flew straight out the window when I opened the burner door. Might have to see about getting on the roof and putting some mesh round the cowl if it happens again. I'd be surprised if a bigger bird could get down there as I would of thought this one would have been a tight fit to get through the gaps in the cowl.

    Found a sparrow in our wood burner this morning! We have a cowl on top of the chimney but it has small louvres that it must have got in through. Must have been very determined to have been able to make it actually inside the wood burner as there is a soot trap below the flue outlet on the burner that I'm sure it would have fallen in to. We don't have an inspection hatch so would have to take the fire bricks out to get it out if it hadn't made it's own way through. Just hope I haven't been using the burner when there's been a bird down there in the past Anyone else found a bird in their wood burner?

    That works ok as long you don't want to sell them directly after a few days of constant rain, especially in winter.

    A building with large overhangs around all sides and no walls of any kind would be the ultimate for airflow. Literally just a roof but with plenty of overhang past the columns to stop rain getting to the logs.

    Brilliant. Thanks for your help. Yep still on the original belts. Probably only done around 150m3 with it so far.

    The belts are all good and I grease the relevant parts regularly. It's only the gearbox I'm unsure on what if anything I should do with. It's got 2 screws, 1 is on the top and 1 on the side. Not sure how I'd check the level. Open them a bit and see if any oil comes out?

    I've got a Balfor SC 700C circular saw bench and I'm wondering if I should be checking the level of the gearbox oil or even changing it every so often? Last time I looked in the manual it didn't really say much about it or how to check the level or is this something I don't need to worry about? Thanks.

    The bark is kind of similar to Sycamore but not as smooth and the inside seems very different. It was planted sometime in the last approx. 30 years so grown pretty quickly for a hard wood? Only felled as the previous owner of the field they were in had planted a line of them either side of a power line

    It's not that heavy really, lighter than Ash or cherry of a similar size but it's reasonably dry with it being sat for a couple of years. The grain is strange when you split it and not seen growth rings like that before in any hardwood - they're huge

    Hi. Been cutting this up what sort of wood is it? Not something I've had before. Been sat a couple of years before I got round to doing anything with it so no pics of the leaves
