  1. 500kg
  2. We do have Mountain Ash trees here but none that look like these
  3. The bark is kind of similar to Sycamore but not as smooth and the inside seems very different. It was planted sometime in the last approx. 30 years so grown pretty quickly for a hard wood? Only felled as the previous owner of the field they were in had planted a line of them either side of a power line
  4. It's not that heavy really, lighter than Ash or cherry of a similar size but it's reasonably dry with it being sat for a couple of years. The grain is strange when you split it and not seen growth rings like that before in any hardwood - they're huge
  5. Hi. Been cutting this up what sort of wood is it? Not something I've had before. Been sat a couple of years before I got round to doing anything with it so no pics of the leaves
  6. Does it perform better if you open a window?
  7. Clearview. Yeah it's an extra.
  8. The external air kit for mine is connected to the underside of the stove then an 80mm pipe goes out the bottom of that through the hearth in to the cellar below. It's fixed to the underside of the floor joists and then goes out through the external wall so it's drawing air directly from outside, not from in the cellar.
  9. Yeah I started all this back in June! Infuriating. Definitely pays to speak to people local to you to see who they have dealt with. Mine is like that too. Once you get up to the right temperature you throttle it back and the flames come from the gases above the glowing red logs. That's when it puts most heat out.
  10. Just had the Clearview fitted with external air feed last week. Not had the heating on since, it heats the whole house. So controllable you can throttle it back when up to temperature and it'll sit there ticking over for hours with a nice lazy flame pattern and the temperature just keeps going up and up. Early days but so far would recommend it. Went for Golden Fire Brown colour too so something a bit different to the usual black.
  11. I can get 15" logs in my stove, quicker to process and easier to stack. Any logs that are for selling I cut at approx. 10"
  12. How do you stack the bags if you've no means of moving them? Doesn't seem much point in using bags if you can't move them around to stack and store them
  13. We have a similar thing on the back of our New Holland. On ours that part you've pulled out then folds over 90 degrees to become a lever that you rotate up or down to control the link arms when fitting implements on the back.
  14. We're having a Clearview Vision 500 with external air feed installed in the next couple of weeks. Similar situation to you, quite an open house so not just heating the living room. I can only comment on how easy the one in the showroom seemed to be to control and that we liked the look of it. Also it can take decent size logs (up to 15" I think). They are very expensive, that's definitely a negative about them. I hope you have better luck with stove fitters than we had. Contacted 5, 1 failed to show up 3 times. 1 turned up but then failed to follow up with a price. Another was ok, we just didn't really like any of the stoves they sold. 1 stove fitter I contacted never even got back to me. And the 5th guy is the one we've ended up buying from. He did a proper survey and quotation as well as turning up on time and obviously sold a stove that we liked.
  15. Ok so it's not something that's going to spread through the timber in the house when I bring them in to burn? They are only in the bark. I remember the tree these particular logs are from was one that had rotted at the bottom snapped in a storm
  16. Was stacking some logs before and noticed there's one particular batch of Ash logs that have holes in the bark and there's loads of little bugs running round on them. Should I be concerned? If you look carefully on the 2nd picture near the top right hand side you can see the little bugs in question. They aren't in the house or anywhere near it, just wondering if I should get rid of those particular logs
  17. Yeah pretty pleased with how they've turned out. Wondering if I should be sealing them, don't want a shiney finish to them though
  18. Sandblasting has done the trick!
  19. Tried nitromors, took the paint off but also a thin patch of the slate came off in the area I'd had the nitromors on...
  20. Is that basically sand blasting? I presume the slate would be hard enough to stand up to that?
  21. Definitely not going to use heat then! At the moment I'm thinking of testing nitromors on the side that's not going to be seen. Yes they are nice sizes, 2.1m long x 0.48m wide x 30mm thick. It will be a shame if I can't make use of them.
  22. Hi. I've got a couple of slate slabs that were an internal wall and have been painted both sides. I'm wanting to remove the paint and use them to build a hearth out of. I started with them looking like this: Pressure washed them and there were 4 layers of paint on them that came off easy apart from some of the last green layer as you can see: Has anyone got any experience removing paint from slate without damaging or staining the slate in the process? So far I've been recommended nitromors but unsure how that will react
  23. The PTO one is fine on the larger stuff if it's on something with decent power. Not sharpened mine yet, think I've done about 80 tons on it so probably be due a sharpen before so long
  24. I've run my balfor on our old (admittedly tired) Ford 4000 and it's frustrating unless you're cutting small stuff that doesn't need splitting or joinery off cuts for kindling. 99% of the time have it on an 80hp New Holland and it'll fly through most stuff up to 12" dia. without having to back off
  25. Easier to stack longer logs too. I've done all my own logs already for next winter for this stove that I haven't got yet! Cut them at 250mm as that's the length I cut all the ones I sell plus we didn't know what house or stove we'd be buying when I was doing them back in December. The 200 & 700 Esses will accept in the region of 400mm long logs so I can do them around that length next time
