  1. Looking at getting Alaskan finally. But a bit stuck on what size to get . at the start I will be milling stuff around 15-30inchs as its a much more manageable timber size so would a larger 48inch mill be too cumbersome and awkward to work with on the smaller timber ? I don't want to get to the stage in the future where I need to buy a second larger mill.. And have to buy twice Thanks all Arran
  2. Nice man, good to see decent sized tops being persuaded to go the right way with just a push :-) nice cutting
  3. My cougar blue is awesome holds it's shape and doesn't milk. I had cougar puke and it went flat and milked like hell, I think it is luck of the draw with cougar..
  4. one i always have on me that hasnt been mentioned is a fig 8 with a crab, has many uses for me.
  5. 2nd that, excelling at reductions is an awesome skill i know a few climbers who are leagues above the rest in quality but not the fastest
  6. at our yard we have five 201's all of similar age and two of them go really well.
  7. Used it quite a bit lately, been doing lots of pine removals.. handy for pole work as it doesnt self tend when you have a bit of weight in your rope which is handy when chogging down.
  8. +1 Used the same set up for ages.and if you cut your lanyard its less heartbreaking..
  9. Stick with double rope man, lockjacks are mint. takes a while to get used too. pantins are good but no need if ya just starting out.. use them arms they need conditioning for climbing
  10. You'll come over here on a working holiday visa, they are easy to get and cheap compared to a work visa.
  11. Greytown mate. I can't get over how beautiful it is... bit different to Auckland ay and wine is good looking forward to having my first full summer in the Wairarapa .
  12. we welcome you to the spiderjack club with open arms.
  13. NZ is awesome bud, really good climbing scene in Auckland spent a year there, a real variety of work dependant on what company you work for. am currently living in the Wairarapa about an hour out of Wellington and its super rural and totally different. With your quals and experience you'll have no trouble with getting a job and a working holiday visa. PM if you have any questions bro.
  14. Only Srt for access where necessary.
  15. Get a few years experience then travel, everywhere looks for roughly 3+ years climbing experience when applying abroad. Good plan to have a plan B as you won't be able to climb forever. Your NPTC's are a must, CS30 31 38 39 are the basics and a good understanding of tree biology and tree ID will be helpful. NPTC's are just the start and a gateway to the tree industry. good luck
  16. getting looked after, top boss skills
  17. Yeh correct I'm on the SJ and probably will be forever I'm currently using a DIY cambium saver with a pinto on one side and a ring on the other, but went up a tree on just a pulley the other day and there is such a noticeable difference still. I think it mades sense to run art with art. glad reviews are positive
  18. Anyone got any negatives (besides the price) regarding the ART rope guide, looking to get one soon.. Thanks Arran
  19. lanyard above mainline below not died yet :-)
  20. The question wasn't directly at you but sounds like your doing everything right, and as you said in a previous post 10 years subbing... the proof is in the pudding ay
  21. Subbed for loads of companies in the UK and everyone works a little different and taking a little bit from everyone to help bring you on as a climber is awesome. I think if you stay in good health you can sub for a good amount of time. not sure i would want to do it full time for forever but at least climb for as long as is possible. questions regarding health and length as a climber... Do you stretch before and after work? and when your watching TV in the evening Do you do another sport as well as tree work so that its not your only exercise i.e. swimming cycling rock climbing etc etc do you eat well and sleep what hours you need? are you up to date with current techniques e.g. srt maybe a sports massage once a month? I think subbing is really rewarding mentally when all goes well.
  22. go onto trademe.co.nz and type in arborist jobs
  23. Maybe A.mellea, I'm actually in NZ and it is autumn just turning to winter and we are getting frost in the morning also
  24. Found these old brackets in a cavity of a elm and can't seem to ID it which is really bugging me now... :thumb down: can anyone help shed some light please Thanks arran
