  1. Hi I'm trying to find examples of individual veteran tree management plans and I can't find any on the interwebs. Does anyone have any they can send me or have a link for? Please inbox me thank you very much
  2. If i was sub contracted do tree surveys would i still need personal indemnity insurance? i'm guessing teh answer is yes but wanted to confirm. also how much would this be a year roughly? thanks
  3. Hi I'm looking for Woodland Management plans & Individual Tree survey reports to get better understanding of layout, terminology and general reading for learning. Can anyone help me out with either of these or preferably both? Inbox me please and ill forward you my email address Thanks a lot.
  4. Its a shame as the experience would be good but as you said i wouldn't want to undervalue myself, what would be acceptable as i will negotiate with him over the price, £200 a day, that should cover insurance, travelling costs etc? what do you think?
  5. Thanks for the reply, I spoke to the guy today and he says the surveys will be for notifiable diseases so Chalara, Oak processionary moths etc etc. He's also quoting £100 a day which to me doesn't seem a lot compared to what you have mentioned is that about average that type of work/survey?? Thanks
  6. Hi All I've been offered some work surveying for notable diseases and wondered what prices people charge for the day/hour? I've passed my PTI course a couple of years ago and have been surveying for about 3 years but haven't done anything privately so wasn't sure what to charge if you can point me in the right direction in what to charge i would appreciate that. Thanks all
  7. Hi Some friends have a farm with extensive woodlands and have asked me to look into securing EWGS money for the woodland. Ive been on the FC website and downloaded all the documents and have started reading about it but wanted peoples advice as i havent done anything like this before so its new territory for me. What sort of things to make sure i do and procedures that are easy to miss really. How possible is it for me to make a succesful bid bearing in mind this will be my first attempt at. Finally i understand the EWGS scheme is changing in Decemeber is that right? can anyone tell me what this could mean for my application? Thanks all
  8. Arbortrack on tablet. Great program but lacking some basic features (GPS) . the new live version will appararently address these issues, one of the new features is that you can make a works order and include maps and email it to contractor while still staring at the tree. which is a nice feature and will save me loads of admin time.

  10. Softwood doesnt make good charcoal in my experience its becomes very brittle (more than usual) and if its worth burning it holds little heat and burns very quickly.
  11. Would i be right in thinking that you can fell as much wood from a woodland unless you are exrtacting it then a licence is needed???? What are the circumstances if you were going to re-use the timber on site say for crafts/firewood? Thanks
  12. I would consider a thin rather than a reduction on a hawthorn simply because of the density of the canopy if its quite squat.
  13. I would still mulch around it if they have spent money wanting to keep the tree makes sense to do as much as you can.
  14. Some HF i would agree looking at the demarcation lines but something else causing the Brown rot in the centre that i couldn't say.
  15. I think its too much seems about 60 - 80% removed it looks good shape wise but if you superimpose one over the other you see that it has lost so much leaf coverage.
  16. I've had goats in the past and we lost a couple of kids. As they get older they get more boisterous and one of the other goats got over playful and it got a whack on the side and caused it to get twisted gut and it died, this happened a couple if times, ive heard its quite common among goats.
  17. I was surveying at he side of a road recently and was offered exactly the same.
  18. I saw this today Researchers test solution to fungal disease of ash trees However i have my concerns, firstly does it work? secondly its not host specific and if it works it could well go on and kill all fungi in any given woodland. Thoughts?
  19. Hi I'm looking into getting more into an advisory role where woodland management is concerned but lack a knowledge background as such (or confidence i'm not sure which) . I have worked for several years for the National Trust working in Practical Woodland management and understand the fundamentals, coppicing, pollarding, making gaps for light/deer management and the ecological side to it but as said i would like to do more on the advisory side like writing management plans and WGS and other forms of grant aid but feel i lack experience/knowledge. Where would be the best place to gain a little work experience in this area and what would be a good starting point? also is it possible that anyone can send me completed WGS apps and woodland management plans so i can read through them, I'm currently trying to read as much as possible but if anyone has any recommendations for books that would be great also, However I have been much more of a learn while doing than from books but it all helps. Please Inbox me if anyone has anything they can send me or some advice i would appreciate it. Thanks
  20. If you were felling larch as part of a WGS agreement but could only fell the 5cm2 per quarter but if you were not extracted teh wood but leaving on site are you still bound by the 5mc2 rule? or can you fell as much as you like as long as you are not extracting it? Thanks
  21. Id give Natural England a call if you arent sure
  22. Only black demarcation lines in the wood. Also Jelly ear is the PC name for Jews ear these days i believe
