  1. NHBS | Browse Equipment for Wildlife, Science & environment Any of the schwegler boxes are good, bit pricey 2f or 2fn will do the job for you. might be easier to make them with a simple bat box design but used untreated timber. Its coming to end of season really but get them in now and you might be lucky for next year, also bear in mind that in order to check them you will need to be qualified or have someone with you that is. The other thing i would say is contact your local bat group they would probably more than happy to come out and offer you some advice on siting and boxes for your yard.

    Tree Probe

I'm after a probe for checking extent of decay, i used to have a nice telescopic piece of wire but recently lost it and don't know where to get another one, other than a long screwdriver what does everyone else use and where did you get it? *financially speaking please bear in mind i'm as tight as a ducks arse* Thanks
  3. I too am worried that there will be a knee jerk reaction from the public after whats happened and especially after a few comments made by Jeremy on the show.

  7. Although i'm not climber i've been working for the National Trust in Woodland management for the last 3 years and conservation for 10. I've mostly been doing lots of tree work, Ancient tree stuff, tree inspections, MEWP work and just about everything else estate maintenance/conservation related and have now been offered a job as Ass Arb officer so no more chainsaw work for me, which i find quite sad. I dont know whether ill go back into conservation in the future but at the moment i'm really pleased with my new job especially after looking for so long. Just wanted to share.
  8. We have one at work of a similar size and is about 800 years old, but could be older if its had a hard life!
  9. Looking at it i would hazard an informed guess at about 1200 - 1400 years old i have table for approx yew ages ill hunt it down and post it up. Needs to be measured at 1.5m from G level and recorded as well. P.S Its amazing!
  10. Hi We've recently lost our anvil for splitting chains. Its not the long block with various size notches. It was an aluminium block with a screw bottom which trapped the various different size chains. I cant find one anywhere can anyone tell me where to get a replacement? Or a suitable piece for stihl chains as an oregon one we have (old) are all the wrong sizes. Thanks

  12. Is this good for anything, it seems quite soft and has grown very fast. Burning, Turning? or just Habitat piles in the woods?
  13. Hi I had a customer yesterday ask me for firewood to be delivered in East Molesley, however its too far for me to go. Anyone near there that can supply 2 tons delivered of seasoned hardwood? Inbox me for more details.
  14. Im after a book that will explain why one would choose a reduction over a crown thin etc etc, nothing to complicated and the benefits of each and other techniques etc. A bit broad i know, however I've read 3998 and thats just guidelines rather than the why or benefits. So if anyone can recomend a good book on that or some websites that would be great. Thanks
  15. I was recently asked by a friend who i had mentioned to about doing the level 3 prof insp course and he has asked me to do some tree insps for some tree work he has coming up. However would i need personal indemnity insurance to do tree inspections for him in case anything went wrong at a later date? (not that it would i hope) I'm not a buisness just an a qualified individual. Thanks
  16. Just before i go swatting up on tpo and conservation areas etc for an interview next week can anyone tell me if there are any changes coming up for legislation this year that i might be quizzed about?

  18. Hi I have a interview for a technical assistant arb in a local council office on Tuesday and i'm hoping someone might have an idea of the range or diversity of questions i might face? I appreciate that a lot of Q's will come from the role profile but im hoping to get an overall idea of what to expect so i can better prepare. So any advice you can offer would be much appreciated Thanks
  19. Hi Whats an ideal seasoning time for logs? We are talking just general open and closed fires and i appreciate it comes down to log size, air flow etc etc but for a general rule. Most of the woods are beech, ash, oak, laure and sycamorel we have been storing for 6months before selling is this too short a time for a well seasoned log? or should it be longer? Thanks
  20. If they are that big it makes me very sad that they are coming down!
