  1. I used to get calls about gas but they seemed to have dried up after I told them I was on oil. They then tried to sell me cheaper electricity so I told them I'm on solar and wind-generated power and these dried up too. These days I get calls from abulance chasers telling me I can get a few grand in compo from an accident I had. They quickly lose interest when they find out no-one else was involved. These buggers are more persistant though, the calls keep coming. Worst bit is they keep calling from a withheld number and then hanging up when I answer.
  2. "No, of course I've forgiven you for trying to shag my Mrs at the Christmas party. To show you there's no hard feelings why don't you come round to our house for tea?"
  3. What is the forum etiquette on swearing? I have a few choice words to describe Dave and his techniques, but don't want to get myself banned.
  4. How it is currently And how it was when he first got it
  5. Then you'll no doubt have seen this daft bugger piloting either a Ural combo or a quad bike and most likely dressed in a pink rabbit costume.
  6. No it isn't, but my mate owns and is in the process of restoring the actual bike Gaston Rahier rode to victory in the 1984 Paris Dakar rallye.
  7. I think I insist on hardwood. When can you deliver?
  8. I got fined £30 in 1984 I think, Misc. Off. Poaching. Got caught fishing three quarters of an hour before the season opened. We'd been there since 9am to ensure we got the spot we wanted and had waited all day and evening until 11pm when we decided we couldn't wait any longer and cast in, then the bailiffs arrived. Caught one bream of about 4 1/2 lb, some bits and got eaten alive by midges for my troubles. Not the best time I've ever had.
  9. "Even the very flames are cold" - my arse! Seasoned elm burns bloody hot! It burns a bit quick though I've found. Good job I've got a fair bit then.
  10. Does he want it glued or nailed back together? I hope you took photos so you'll know how it looked beforehand.
  11. I found NFU to be horrendously expensive when quoting for my hilux. Sureterm got my business, being far cheaper than anyone else. I'm told NFU are very good to deal with but they were more than 3 times the price.
  12. Reminds me of the method my gran used to clear her chimney. IIRC she would stuff newspaper up the chimney and light it to burn all the soot off once a week. This is a very dim memory though, but I heard someone else mentioning this method fairly recently as well.
  13. Perhaps send the manager or owner a letter on headed notepaper (if you run your own business) with your qualifications detailed to show them that you know what you are talking about instead of just some punter who thinks a tree looks dodgy, and what your concerns are. That way, you might even get some work out of it.
  14. I was chatting with a mate yesterday who told me about a house he was working at (he's a carpenter) and how, apparently, every 12 months someone had to go up on the roof with a hoe and chip away at the buildup of soot & tar in the chimney pot. Apparently it would go from say a 10" gap to a 2" gap over the course of one year. Now, allowing for a degree of exaggeration or two, what would cause this buildup? Burning too much softwood and not enough hardwood? Burning other stuff i.e. rubbish like plastic? I find it quite hard to believe a chimney would choke up so badly so quickly. What do you reckon?
  15. Are you suggesting a deal was struck at the crossroads?
  16. Had guests round today so we lit ours about 10.30 this morning. Still going now although it's not that cold tonight. I always intend to have a fire laid ready to light whenever needed but once I've laid it I find it a struggle not to light it straight away. And once it's lit I'm reluctant to let it go out. Must be something primeval in me.
  17. It can be done. You'll need some software in order to "clone" your old drive and all it's contents onto the new drive. But don't ask me how - I've been meaning to do mine and doing a bit of research but I keep putting it off. Try googling "Cloning hard drive" for more info.
  18. Something to do with brake pads.
  19. Have you tried knitting?
  20. Today has been all about Gil Scott-Heron who sadly died yesterday [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSoTLmsnKvY]Pieces of a man[/ame]
