  1. Who was taught 1/3 for the gob? When I did mine I was told 1/5 to 1/4 for the gob and the hinge should be 1/10 the diameter. Basic felling numbers in textbook situations which are rare. Anyway it's obvious what the guy did wrong... He tried to take too much and didn't have a decent hinge... end of!
  2. I never signed. For some reason I prefer woodlands...
  3. I can get a file to last me around 2 chains. After each tooth I tap the tip of the file off something hard and every few teeth I pull the file backwards through a cloth (mainly the inside of the elbow closed round it on free arm if wearing long sleeves) I dont push the file hard into the tooth either, just nice easy strokes and take file out of tooth when pulling back the file.
  4. Well Rupe has given all the advice you need so all that remains is for me to say "what a horrible job" I guess by your comments that you have not done much pruning so I suppose you can be forgiven in that aspect. The advice I will give is don't do it again for one. Secondly and most importantly don't rush! If you underpriced the job well thats something you have to do better next time but never rush because of it. Pruning isn't a job you can rush and it takes time moving around the crown selecting the proper pruning points, not breaking the new leaders you made and generally making the tree look like it hasn't been touched (unlike your pics). Anyway that was a good ballsy move posting that on here and for that you will learn for sure. As my old school teacher used to say "must try harder"
  5. Cracking video mate:thumbup: I will share it:thumbup1:
  6. If it is for recreational purposes then you shouldn't find anything too taxing. Do you do rock climbing? If so your already more than half way there. When choosing a tree to climb you should look for ones with wide, open crowns (no epicormic growth where possible) and a nice high central leader for your main anchor point. Remember to use a cambium saver and try not to damage the tree in any way. Most of all just enjoy it, there is not many things that can bring a smile to your face like swinging around a big tree in beautiful surroundings.
  7. I used to work for IBM, compaq and various other companies just doing crap production line work going stir crazy. One day I got up and said sod it I am going to go find a real job and headed for the forests to find some woodcutters and ask for a job. To my surprise that worked and after about 8 years using saws without tickets I got a job with tilhill forestry doing line clearance and they put me through every ticket under the sun (at the time). I used to do a lot of rock climbing so tree surgery was the obvious path for me and I love my job even after 20 years and and a lot of sore bits.
  8. I would go for the TW but that's cos I don't like GM. People say GM are much better now but I have not used one for a long time thankfully so couldn't comment on a new one.
  9. Your forgetting one thing there... Clue is in the name:001_rolleyes:
  10. I hate the thing! I have tried on many occasions thinking its just cos I am not used to it so I try and try and still hate it. It gets caught in branches and your rope gets caught in it and it restricts movement of the leg. Hate it hate it hate it!
  11. Thanks for posting that tony, I stuck it on my Facebook as well. The more people that see that the better IMO.

    Gum Tree

Nice video Drew, I love a good straightforward job like that, unfortunately every tree I get always has sheds, houses, fences etc under them.
  13. I use mine in the yoyo technique for long hauls Into the crown. Also as my emergency escape route while taking down a stem on spikes, the rope is simply choked onto the stem with a running bowline. The grigri is a great bit of kit and I would hate to be without it.
  14. Ok I am out now, good luck guys unless this is my moment.... I never win anything! Who am I trying to kid haha Laters
  15. Someone go round to andys house and hit that damned watch with a hammer!
  16. I will have the rules all written and completed by the time I get my new silky, my sugoi is needing a replacement blade anyway.
  17. Rule 43 sub section 3 paragraph 4 clearly states that anyone posting pics forfeits their right to any prizes and they should subsequently pass these on to the next person with the name beginning with a D!
  18. Hmmm a silky eh? Might just use up my remaining mb's on the contract
  19. I just noticed the hand saw! What kind? Could be worth wasting some time on the iPhone
