Plenty around this beech on the Dava Way in Moray. Severe dieback above with the majority of limbs hosting clusters of Oyster. The beech 10 yards away had a completely different visitor in abundance.

I trained at TKF at Holmfirth and they supplied kit too. PPE trousers and boots that fit you were all that was expected. One lad on the course had bought all his kit and failed 38. Not a position you want to be in with the cost of it all.

Was clear felling last week ready for pheasant shoots. About 20 ton of poplar and birch in some awkward and boggy spots. Hot work even when it was minus 2 or the weeks perpetual drizzle. But satisfying. I set the daily rate for the estate that contracts me in. Not great money but certainly better than some of the other posters. Back to climbing next week.

Why opt for a tiny stove? We used fire board to seal the fireplace. Our stove vents out the back. And a 90 bend behind the board connects to a register plate at the base of the chimney. The bonus is that you aren't heating the chimney breast to the extent that an inset stove does. Plus, with the vent at the back we can have a kettle and a pan on the top when the power cuts happen in the winter. It does mean extending the hearth into the room though.

Big thanks for that. I'm split between doing my own work and a local estate which means I'm slowly building up knowledge of the arb work needed on it. It's also a fung hunters paradise at the moment, which has the estate guy who works alongside me roll his eyes in despair when I find another one. The owners have reacted positively to the bracing concept as its a fantastic looking tree in flower. I am under no illusion as to its risk of failure at the split as it has had a long time to get to that state before being noticed. If its not braced I reckon a bad winter will split it.

That white marking on the trunk is the same as the pics I posted on the fungi thread of a beech with Pleurotus just the other day. I believe the white stuff is caused by an insect. Looking forward to more informed comments on it.

Sorry. I didn't have one with me when I removed it. It looks like the nature of the tree to interweave a bit as there was another that was getting towards doing the same.

Breakfast: porridge with a layer of sugar on top. Means I'm good to lunchtime and a bit beyond if I need to work through. Lunch: two rounds of sarnies plus an apple and banana. Sometimes a cereal bar from Lidls (can't remember the make) Flask of coffee and 3 litres of water in my camelback. Seems to work. :-)

Working my way around some trees on an island in the estate I'm working at. Found a Eucryphia tree, about 45ft or so, fantastic blossom on it right now. 15ft up the main stem it splits. A some stage in the past a third small stem has grown through the gap about a foot above the split. It's growth has evidently kept the split from healing and the ears are quite large in relation to stem size. To halt this process I've removed the third stem, but obviously need to do something to allow the main stems to "heal" as much as possible at the split. Stem diameter above the split is about 10-12 inches Strapping them immediately came to mind, but how high above the split should I put the straps and what's the best kind of strap to use? Cheers.

Good advice - thanks. I carted my 576 up a tree last week, and while I was comfortable cutting with it on spikes, I wasn't comfortable with it hanging from my harness.

I noticed last nights thread and took a while to put together a carefully worded response. By the time I pressed go I guess it had been pulled. I have, and still get, massive value from the Arbtalk forum. Whether its fungi, kit choices, working methods, humour from the lounge and the lunges, it works for me. And now I understand why Huskys are better than Stihl. Challenging threads have their place and also add value too. It can provide a wake up call to those who maybe need one, and educate others who maybe haven't been exposed to situations discussed. I've read a good few on here. But sadly last nights thread was poorly started. A better explanation of circumstances to start with might have got things off on a better footing and the thread may have stayed alive and the subject explored further. I would be surprised to read of someone who doesn't get value from Arbtalk.

Pleurotus I think, plus some hangers on. This is a nice tall beech, but next to an estate road. No other fungi around the base at all. Hoping it might last a good while yet. ? -
