  1. Hi there I have got it in my head that the next place I would like to work in is japan. Is there any japanese arborists on here or anyone who has worked out there before that would be willing to share some advice/contacts my way? Cheers in advance, Conall
  2. Two birches that had grown in the shape of one that I reduced this afternoon. It was just a light reduction mostly to pull them back in shape.
  3. Hey bro, try emailing asplundh, I heard they are looking for workers, I might still have an email for one of the guys a little higher up if your interested pm me. If you like the outdoors you will love nz. Check out the coromandel as soon as you can. Good luck conall
  4. Hey tom, When do you arrive in nz? how long are you planning to stay for? When I came out here I just emailed 15 or so company's in areas I wanted to work in with a a few paragraphs say who I was and what I want to do in nz along with my cv and I have gotten more than enough work, so just doing that is enough bro, good luck. safe travels Conall
  5. I'm sure you have all seen this but its worth another watch,[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLwb66XWG3w]Rouge Traders Tree Surgeon Part1 - YouTube[/ame]
  6. Hey, I cant really answer your exact question as I havent used one on the ground but I have used one in a tree a few times and found it a really useful bit of kit. your not going to be able to get back leaners over with it but when the weight is dead center when felling out a top or when blocking down larger sections are two situations I found it most useful in as it gives a significant amount of lift and its pretty easy to use.
  7. Nz is really good cheers, I'm not sure of any trees around the area that you are aloud to climb that would be any good. Would be interested hearing where you go in the end as would be good to go when I'm back.
  8. If you had asked 2 months ago I would have been up for a climb but moved from thirsk to new zealand, where in the thirsk area were you wanting to go climbing?
  9. If you don't want to do change overs your going to need a big shot for your throwline.
  10. Marc just for my own amusement I have to know if the shoulder rides off giant groundie and the pole vault have ever been combined?
  11. I have Not seen enough shockers on here (not looked through every page), so I thought I would raise you all a real shocker from 6 or so months ago. It was leaning quite a bit towards the stream and was pretty rotten as you can see, we had a wire line going to the tractor to bring it where we wanted it. We didn't have a bar big enough to reach the whole way through with us so I did the back cut on the far side first for obvious reasons and left a decent amount of hinge wood as it was real rotten. Started the near side back cut and it started cracking before the tractor had started pulling and it just snapped out into the stream. The wire line at the bottom of the stem was what we used to pull it out of the stream, that wasn't where we were trying pull it over from haha. We should have had tension on it as soon as I had started the near side back cut.:blushing: Nothing was broken.
  12. Hey Drew The job I took was in Tauranga so I am down there at the moment, but will be heading north soon.
  13. Hi Quercus I traveled out to nz just over a month ago from the UK. I got myself a working holiday visa for 23 months. as I want to travel and work for different companies( e.g travel 2 months work 2-3 months. I sent about 15 emails out to different companies about 1.5 months before flying to companies in auckland and the bay of plenty and got 5 job offers back within a week and another a few weeks later. The E-mail was just a cv and a little letter saying what I planned to do and how much I wanted to see nz. I left it so I was going to contact the companies when I got to auckland. One of them was offering me a room as well as a job so I took that one. from what I have seen so far you shouldn't have much problems with getting a job and accommodation as new zealanders are the most friendly and welcoming people ever. staying in backpackers is pretty cheap ( 25ish dollars a night) or renting is supposed to be pretty cheap but I haven't looked too much into that yet. I don't know about best time of year, if I was you Id just get initial contact with a handful of company's you would like to work for and the get yourself out here, its easier getting work when your over here as they know your serious about coming over and working and all that. Kit wise all have taken is 1 backpack and a day sack with chainsaw boots and trousers, I bought a new lid out here. I also suggest getting transport like a station wagon our a ute (pickup). please ask if you have anymore questions. Conall
